CHICAGO - America plunged into a deeper state of disruption and paralysis on Friday as New York and Illinois announced a broad series of measures aimed at keeping tens of millions of residents cloistered in their homes, following similar actions by California and a patchwork of restrictions from coast to coast.

The new, more stringent directives, in some of the country’s most populous states, were intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus that has swept across the country, sickening more than 17,000 people and claiming at least 214 lives.

By the end of the weekend, at least 1 in 5 Americans will be under orders to stay home, and more states were expected to follow suit. ...

Family member works in primary care.

There is quite a lot of concern regarding flu vaccines. Currently these are available to higher risk groups.

Objectively bringing large numbers of high risk people into the medical center to wait in the waiting room with sick people, then get a flu vaccine, then have them wait 20mins more (in case of reaction) seems objectively crazy.

They are in the process of working out what they can do to minimize the risk (i.e. vaccine clinics outside of normal operating hours.)

There are heaps of people that want flu vaccines, but supply of vaccines is a little unpredictable, so they can't plan too far ahead.

The wording used was "Should stay home", rather than "must" as such you are not under obligation to stay home. This allows you to make an objective risk based assessment of your own.

All the other statements are about social distancing (i.e. reducing personal contact within 2 meters).

As with an earlier poster, I don't see that driving to pick up supplies that another person has got for you, and left outside for you to pick up poses an objective risk, so wouldn't see an issue in doing that. (Wash hands with soap with outside tap prior to re-entering car, or discard disposable gloves)

Of course you will also need to consider other details, such as how you will refuel you car etc. - I think with planning this stuff could be worked through (i.e. go to a petrol station that offers pay at pump, at a quiet time. Wait until payment terminal is available, fuel car, clean hands or discard glove's & leave)

We've been in active social distancing for a week now. You obviously need to go and get food, go to the doctor etc. The point is to limit your risk, not to lock you up.

We've been receiving groceries from Countdown via delivery for many years. We've just received a delivery and many items were omitted due to lack of stock. We used to order roughly fortnightly. This order should have been enough for ~10-14 days. There wasn't even enough supplied for a week. Not even a week's worth of dog food (they supplied one roll)! We're not trying to stock up, just order the usual. Countdown say they've limited orders to a value of $800, but ours was just over $200 and they couldn't supply it. I've just put through an order of some items they didn't supply in this order (just some of them, most couldn't be ordered), and a couple of other basics. The earliest open delivery time slot was for Friday night! Looks like a trip to town early one morning to a New World.

They are also limiting cat food sachets to 2 per customer... I have 2 cats so basically I can buy just 1 day's worth

Had to order 2 dozen from an online pet store.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Having enough food, drink and medications to be able to continue live is the very definition of necessary, so your proposed trips certainly meet all the criteria.
Just make sure that both you and the good Samaritan understand that this is likely to be a semi-permanent arrangement: the CIVID-19 virus isn't going anywhere by itself, and I reckon a vaccine is at least nine to twelve months away

Drive carefully, there's a lot of idiots out there - this is completely independent of any COVID-19 concerns, btw

Christchurch City Council website now says:

Not sure when the update happened, must have been in the last three hours or so.

It took effect at 4pm today.

Sounds like a great plan to me. I suggest adding in some sanitizing so you don't bring home an infection on your hands or the grocery items, so you're safe from infection. Also think about if something abnormal happens: a flat tire or car breakdown. Have a flexible plan for dealing with those scenarios.

Rules are for the guidance of the wise and obedience of fools. Don't be a fool and ignore the rule, and don't obey the rule foolishly. Be wise... figure out what the purpose of the rule is, and accomplish that in the best possible way.
