A good Samaritan has contacted me offering to do our shopping. She lives in town, we live a long way out, there is nothing but farms between here and there. I appreciate her offer but don't see why she should also have to bear the burden of driving all the way out here just for that. I would be happy to drive to her place and pick up the shopping at an agreed time if left outside. I would be in my car the whole time and have no contact with anyone. Is this acceptable?

Sounds like a great plan to me. I suggest adding in some sanitizing so you don't bring home an infection on your hands or the grocery items, so you're safe from infection. Also think about if something abnormal happens: a flat tire or car breakdown. Have a flexible plan for dealing with those scenarios.

Rules are for the guidance of the wise and obedience of fools. Don't be a fool and ignore the rule, and don't obey the rule foolishly. Be wise... figure out what the purpose of the rule is, and accomplish that in the best possible way.

Wondering whether over 70s are acceptable? Otherwise it's quite a small pool of candidates.

instead of pulling people in their 70s into a suicidal mission, they should focus on quarantine at the airports. great minds like @geektastic also agrees

Announcement from Wellington Mayor Andy Foster:

This is a fast moving situation so this is the first of a series of updates for you from me.

The Prime Minister has underlined the gravity of the situation and has focused on the absolute need for people to limit their physical contact with each other – particularly those over the age of 70 and those with pre-existing medical conditions or low immunity.

In that light, and due to the fact several more cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the Wellington region today, we have decided to close most City Council facilities until further notice.

These include swimming pools, libraries, recreation centres, community centres, the City Gallery and our museums and venues.

The Zoo and Zealandia will remain open for the moment – but with reduced public programmes.

We have been in touch with our counterparts at our neighbouring councils and they are also closing their facilities.

I have daily meetings with Wellington City Council’s pandemic response team of senior managers representing our essential services including transport and infrastructure and community welfare.

I am also in contact with the region’s other mayors and Greater Wellington Regional Council Chair Daran Ponter.

The City Council’s pandemic response team is also working with the regional Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC). This has been activated.

The City Council’s Emergency Welfare Team has activated and is working with the ECC, District Health Boards and community organisations to prepare for an escalation of the Covid-19 situation.

This includes working with food-bank operators to ensure they can operate if the situation worsens.

The Emergency Welfare Team is also putting in place arrangements to accommodate individuals and families who do not have their own accommodation for self-isolation.

Our focus next week will be to develop response plans for other priority population groups such aged/elderly and disability – particularly in light of today’s advice from the Prime Minister.

Finally, I just want to remind Wellingtonians that you have an essential and crucial role in getting the city and region through the Covid-19 situation.

First – look after yourselves and stay aware - follow the advice of the Ministry of Health, listen to the radio and keep watch on social media.

Most importantly, keep checking the Government’s dedicated website – covid19@govt.nz or check the Wellington City Council website – wellington.govt.nz

Second, look after your whanau, friends and neighbours – stay in touch with them and help them out – but follow advice on social distancing and, if you’re not feeling well, stay at home and stay isolated.

I also fully endorse the #Love Local campaign launched by WellingtonNZ and The Dominion Post. It is essential that we keep supporting local businesses because they are already doing it tough.

Keep buying from your local dairy, keep ordering from your favourite restaurant – and remember, supermarkets and other essential services will remain open so there’s absolutely no need to panic-buy.

We can get through this together. We must remain calm - Wellington is a community with a strong heart – we’re a resilient city. We’ve overcome major issues in the past and we’ll overcome this.

Press release:

The Government and the hospitality industry have worked together to produce guidelines to assist with managing and reducing transmission of COVID-19, Health Minister David Clark announced today.

The guidelines developed between the Government, Hospitality New Zealand and SkyCity Entertainment Group, set out how the new restrictions on physical distancing and the limit of 100 people in an indoor space will work in bars and restaurants and other hospitality and entertainment venues.

Key components of the guidelines include:

•    Implementing a COVID-19 guest register of everyone in a venue
•    Undertaking regular head counts of people in a venue
•    Configuring electronic gaming machines to allow appropriate physical distancing
•    Limiting table games at a casino to 5 persons per table

“These measures are important to protect the health of New Zealanders, which is our number one priority,” Health Minister David Clark said.

“They will change the way we attend bars and restaurants and have an impact on the way people go about living their lives, but we have to apply common sense in these circumstances.

“Many of us look forward to a visit to a café or restaurant to mark special occasions or share time with friends and family. My hope is these changes will allow us to still make the most of these times while keeping us all safer.

“I want to thank the industry for their constructive engagement in developing the guidelines. We’re all in this together and the guidelines demonstrate how important good will and cooperation is at this time.

“I also want to thank in advance the public for their patience with bar and restaurant owners who will be acting in the best interests of all New Zealanders through implementing these guidelines,” David Clark said.

"Hospitality New Zealand appreciate the Government is continually adapting and responding to the COVID-19 situation. These new hospitality guidelines developed between Government and industry are a practical solution for hospitality venues to continue to operate and help assist with reducing the transmission of COVID-19,” said Julie White, Chief Executive of Hospitality New Zealand.

"It is paramount that we as industry work with Government during these unprecedented times

"Hospitality's top concern is the wellbeing of our people." Julie White said.

Graeme Stephens, SkyCity Entertainment Group Chief Executive Officer says: “We are working extremely hard to provide an environment that is safe for our staff and customers and we fully support the measures that have been put in place by the Ministry of Health for the hospitality industry.

“We employ over 4000 people in New Zealand and by working within these guidelines from government we can achieve our main priority at the moment, which is to stay open and operating for as long as possible to maintain shifts for staff and keep as many people as we can on a steady income throughout these unprecedented times.”

For Pete's sake - if they were shut, there would be no need for a register!

Not sure if anyone's brought this up yet, but it looks like it might soon be time for The Quiz Broadcast. It's actually scarily apropos. Don't think about The Event and Remain Indoors!.

No hand sanitiser at my local supermarket today. So I purchased a bottle of Listerine with alcohol in it. That should be effective I think.

They are also limiting cat food sachets to 2 per customer... I have 2 cats so basically I can buy just 1 day's worth

Had to order 2 dozen from an online pet store.

You would hope they would be following common sense , especially if they have a limited supply of larger sized packets. Rationing like this isn't going to make people shop normally IMO. Otherwise we coudld end up with a whole family of people going to the supermarket and buying separately, when we should be limiting the number of people gathering at the super market, and the number of trips they need to make. Hopefully the government will regulate what is going on at supermarkets, so everyone can buy what they need and shop normally.

Listerine has only a small percentage of alcohol. To be effective it needs to be circa 60%. I think you are best to use it as a mouth wash and use soap on your hands

Techies should have isopropyl alcohol in their kits, but you're not supposed to use it straight. It is a good base for DIY sanitiser, though.
