12 cases now recovered.  Some positive news during these somewhat dark days.

There's a bit of an own goal in TW's statement:

"In the past two weeks the group has seen unprecedented demand for essential items across all our brands. Goods sold included essential items to prepare themselves for the mandatory isolation period of at least four weeks,"

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120513149/coronavirus-the-warehouse-will-stay-open-during-lockdown

... but that's not the same as providing essential items throughout the isolation period.

Whatever the argument, though, it's a terribly self-serving decision by the company. I just hope that MBIE grow the balls and push back against this, and then enforces it.

I also don't buy the argument that bottle stores in 'dry' areas should be considered essential, simply because alcohol isn't available from supermarkets in those areas. Is that seriously going to be the case?

Yeah...the idea that an infected person has tried on some clothing items, or riffled though them looking for their size is leaves me with "Nah, not going there this year"

They will probably do what super markets are doing, by having floor markers showing 2 metre distancing , and essential items will be put in one area and the rest fenced off. Also the number of people in the store restricted, and only being allowed to spend a a certain amount of time instore. Although they do sell some essentials, it isn't a wide range compared to a supermarket and  they did move away from becoming another supermarket some time ago, as at one stage they were looking at becoming a third supermarket...a pity they didn't.

Exactly. I dont have any issue with TWG being open if the correct guidelines are in place.

While it isn't a wide range, it is another option. With people out there panic buying, major essentials will run out as has already happened.

If you use the argument that TWG products can be sourced in other places, well.... we may as well shut all dairies and stop on line deliveries (Food Bag), etc.

It may well be that once people realise that TWG is only selling essentials that they stop going there....so they end up shutting shop anyway. I also doubt TWG has made this announcement without some discussion with government agencies.

It was stated during the live press conference held at 1pm, that The Warehouse had not (yet) been classified as an essential business. So will be interesting to see what happens there.

I would hope it covers things like if you have a plumbing or roofing leaks into the house which can cause major problems, or parts of your roof fly off in the wind, and you need it repairing urgently etc.

It's reasonably clear: *Any entity involved in building and construction related to essential services and critical infrastructure *Any entity involved in building and construction required immediately to maintain human health and safety at home or work * Any entity that performs or is involved in building and resource consenting necessary for the above purposes The second point should cover burst pipes and the like.

It is still open to interpretation and grey areas IMO. eg Hardware stores seem to think they can remain open, because they supply parts and materials needed for the above . If that is the case, then public shouldn't also be allowed entry, just essential workers, and then they would need to show they have the need for that part/s, rather than buying things for friends to do DIY while in home isolation. Otherwise it all makes a mockery of it, as the whole purpose is to stop people coming together in places where they can transmit the virus .

In Australia, I understand they have gazette noticed stores that need to close so there is no ambiguity, but bad luck to any store where they have made an error.

Got call asking me to fill in, delivering Meals on Wheels. Most of the normal drivers are in the high risk group, so they were a little short on drivers today.
I have to say the city is very busy today. I was stuck in a trafic jam, not moving for a whole 10 minutes. That is un heard of around here. πŸ˜ƒ

Why is the warehouse allowed to stay open and liquor places. So much for a lock down.

The Warehouse I can at least vaguely understand.

However, if alcohol is an essential then it’s AA for you.

Why does everyone think they need to go out a shop, with the byproduct being potentially spreading the virus further? As the Prime ministers said, the supermarkets will still be open today, tomorrow, and the next day, implying that people will still be able to go to it and get what they need.

In my opinion, just a self-serving company interested in milking the cash cow and keep stock price up in the NZX.

I read recently that their sales volumes and profits had been falling.

Maybe they can repurpose themselves as a food warehouse only, that would reduce traffic at the supermarkets.

If you enjoyed the experience, why not consider moving to fabulous, sunny Auckland? Sit in gridlocked traffic for over two hours each day! Breathe your neighbour's exhaust fumes! Watch the guy in the car to your left updating his Facebook page! All that, *and* the high housing prices, on special whenever you want it!

Italy has reported less deaths second day in a row so hopefully this downward trend continues for them and the lockdown they have is taking effect. For us here we will not find out until 15th April for sure how effective our lockdown has been as I expect our cases to rise until then. This is only going to work if everyone does their part and follows the health official guidelines.

Do whatever you want to do man.
