GV27:

Sideface:

Jacinda: "Don't expect to be able to go to your local Warehouse"

Someone will be getting a visit from the regulators when this is all over.

Not just the warehouse either but all the big fast food chains need a visit from the regulators all of them still have locations open from what I can see. Ridiculous.

Following on from my earlier comment of the US serving as an antipattern, the NYT reports:

Vice President Mike Pence indicated on Sunday at a White House briefing about the virus that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would issue new guidelines on Monday, allowing some people who have been exposed to the coronavirus to resume working outside their homes if they wear masks.

They're sending Covid19 carriers back out in public. I simply cannot think of a worse country to be in than the US in terms of bad leadership in times of crisis.

People in small apartments don't want to purchase extra junk that they have no room for their small homes.

I've never been in a kitchenless apartment, but I can't believe that they don't have a microwave and a jug.

SJB:

Is there an official map of where the confirmed case have occurred so far?

@SJB

This isn't "official" - but it seems to be up to date, uses MoH data and IMO is reasonably well laid out:

(Click on circles to get case data per region - with the proviso that the latest case data hasn't been uploaded to the MoH site yet)

It could be worse, you might not have an option

"We already have a limited number of doctors and nurses. Under extreme circumstances, we could even ask them to keep working even if [they] tested positive for coronavirus. Still, they should be equipped with protective devices to avoid spreading the virus further."

Got an email from my medical centre, and THEY cant even get it right:

If you meet the following screen you will qualify for screening at the Community Coronavirus Testing Facility operated by ShoreCare Smales Farm or Northcote.

The Community Coronavirus testing facility is in Northcross

I did email them to point out the error, but no update has been issued. FFS.

I would hope it covers things like if you have a plumbing or roofing leaks into the house which can cause major problems, or parts of your roof fly off in the wind, and you need it repairing urgently etc. Hopefully they will follow common sense, and it doesn't mean building an extension because you need more room during self isolation!

Plumbers will still be allowed to work on emergency cases (e.g. leaks) but not on non-essential (e.g. building a new house or  renovating a bathroom). Plumbing supply companies are allowed to sell goods to plumbers for emergency work.

It is still open to interpretation and grey areas IMO. eg Hardware stores seem to think they can remain open, because they supply parts and materials needed for the above . If that is the case, then public shouldn't also be allowed entry, just essential workers, and then they would need to show they have the need for that part/s, rather than buying things for friends to do DIY while in home isolation. Otherwise it all makes a mockery of it, as the whole purpose is to stop people coming together in places where they can transmit the virus .

That is NOT the case. Hardware stores can only supply products needed for essential work. They cannot sell to the general public.

What an awful situation - and it's probably even worse now than when that article was written:

"Italy is the worst-hit country after China"

It's now by far the worst hit country - over 6,000 deaths and a (simple deaths/cases) case fatality rate of almost 10%.

The prospect of 4 weeks isolation with the wife and having no kitchen was scarier than covid-19

We need a +1 Funny mod capability alongside the general +1 Support for things like this :-).

I'm wondering how 4 weeks isolation with the wife, kitchen, and builder appeals.

Yes they do seem to have come out with more clarity over it all now.

Unfortunate news regarding an IT colleague in the US who has succumbed to the pressure of trying to get people home, huge financial pressure, and the illness all around him. He has opted to take his own life.

Guys, I know this is scary. I know there is a lot of pressure, financial and otherwise. Don't bear the weight of this alone. We live in a country where people can get financial assistance.

If you are struggling, speak up, don't be ashamed, reluctant or hesitate to ask for help.

Very sorry to hear this about your colleague. It must be difficult to avoid feeling overwhelmed in such an exceptional situation. My condolences.

Shameless dropkick #12234656

supplements.co.nz - here's part of their e-mail:

After some discussion between [owners] about where to from here, we believe that we are providing an essential service to New Zealanders providing them the health products they need at a time like this.

In balancing this with public and staff safety, we have decided to close all stores to the public from 6pm tonight to eliminate customer and staff facing interaction.

We will then switch to fulfilling your orders online only from our main warehouse.

We will continue working, but will put in place alternative ways of working to keep employees safe, including shift-based working, staggered meal breaks, and physical distancing.

We are just working with our team, suppliers and partners to make sure we can serve you to the best of our ability.

It's not about what you believe -- the PM has been crystal clear about what is essential services, i.e. necessities of life. Protein bars and herbal supplements aren't.
