It can be hard to speak up, it can be very lonely in a crowded place, it can be very hard to not be OK so if you feel someone needs help reach out don't wait.

RNZ: Kiwis in Australia face Coronavirus-created unemployment with no govt help

New Zealanders in Australia who face months of unemployment or dramatically-reduced working hours because of Covid-19 may get no financial assistance.

Of the 634,000 New Zealanders living in Australia, about half are not eligible for welfare payments there, because they arrived after February 2001 and are considered 'non-protected special category visa-holders'.

An advocacy group for New Zealanders in Australia, Oz Kiwi, said the New Zealand government would probably need to "kick up a stink" to get Australia to temporarily allow those people to claim a benefit, including any special Covid-19 assistance.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced up to $25,000 in wage relief for small-to-medium businesses, but has yet to announce what assistance will be offered to individual workers who find themselves jobless or with dramatic cuts to their working hours.

Like New Zealand, Australia has banned gatherings of more than 100 people and many people are already working from home if they are able to do so.

...Australia has a high rate of casual employment, with about 2.5 million workers on a casual contract.

Harvey said casual rates tended to be very high but came with the downside of no guaranteed hours.

As a New Zealander in Australia he had always had "a sense of kind of falling through the cracks in some ways of what benefits you can get".

The current situation was unprecedented and the Morrison government should "absolutely" consider extending welfare to those New Zealanders who had made Australia home, Harvey said.

"This kind of scenario is obviously unprecedented but those benefits should be universal… I mean, I've lived here for nearly a quarter of my life."

...He had been told "nothing at all" about any financial assistance that either he or his employer could access.

"I don't necessarily know if that's the company's fault. I think the Morrison government has been incredibly sluggish with communicating that kind of information to companies and the workers across Australia. So there's definitely an era of uncertainty."

One News Air New Zealand to put out additional aircraft as Kiwis scramble home before coronavirus lockdown

Air New Zealand has announced it will put out additional aircraft, including larger models, to ensure as many Kiwis as possible can arrive home before the country enters lockdown at midnight on Wednesday.

..."We know that many people across New Zealand are trying to get home before Wednesday evening's alert level four deadline," Air New Zealand Senior Manager Customer Care and Communications Doug Grant said.

"We're working as hard and as fast as we can across our network to make that happen for as many people as possible. To do that, we're putting on additional aircraft, including larger aircraft, to ensure that we can get as many people moving as possible."

Mr Grant thanked New Zealanders for their patience while the airline navigates "these incredibly tricky times".

He also urged customers with travel plans in place that they did not plan on using to go to the Air New Zealand website to cancel their booking.

"What this will do is free up really important seats for customers who need to travel domestically in the next 24 hours," he said.

Anyone looking to book a ticket with Air New Zealand has been advised not to go through their contact centre, but to instead find available bookings on their website.

They urgently need to set up a service so that dodgy businesses that operate illegally can be reported. The number of shops that are still taking the mickey is beyond the pale.

So my wife is a manager for one of the building supplies companies mentioned and one of their customers is currently working on a hospital... they still need a steady supply over the shutdown but that means that a fair amount of staff are needed in terms of managing stock coming inwards and outwards as drop shipping doesn’t seem to be a thing in the building industry.

They’ve been trying to get clarification from the govt but just keep on being told more details will come. I do think they could have/should have been much clearer on their definitions when they came up with the levels.

Surprised to see Chorus Still intend to carry out Fibre installs, Surely getting Upgraded to Fibre cant be a essential service. especially if you already have a intact copper or wireless service.

Any bets how long it is before the first reports of people flouting the rules? Not people just trying to get home, but deliberately ignoring what they are supposed to do.

This is a situation I agree some would have to work - but not open to public and not employing more stuff than needed just to supply online orders from non-emergency consumers.
