Dingbatt:

So Level 4 restrictions start at 2359 tomorrow.

Any bets how long it is before the first reports of people flouting the rules? Not people just trying to get home, but deliberately ignoring what they are supposed to do.

I have some faith in human nature, so I’ll say a week.

I want to see what happens to them. It HAS to be harsh. Flouters are the spreaders.

Fourpeak:

Sure Internet is an essential service and faults should be fixed as well as essential business jobs during the lockdown, But to have Techs going to private households that are supposed to be in lockdown to do connections that are not necessary when there is already a service in place seems counter productive to helping stop the the spread of this virus.

We had the official release from Chorus today and it’s basically

- faults

- new installs will be on a case by case basis. You will need a very good reason why

- no upgrades, ala ADSL to VDSL to Fibre will not be done

A lot of our work where we order/use Chorus services will be placed on hold.

dumb question - i presume one can ride a bike for exercise (by yourself)? it says you can go outside to exercise as long as you keep 2m between others.

Yes, walk too.

What the hell do you do with a farmer over 80 who employs hands mostly well over 70 who wants them to shear sheep tomorrow? Is sheep farming 'essential'? Does that extend to the age of the workers? Even sheep raised for meat have to be shorn. This affects me personally. How do you make sense of these kinds of situations?

Anything to do with food production seems to be carrying on eg fruit picking which is in full swing at the moment. A protection plan needs to be in place for workers. If you don’t produce the food now there will be shortages down the line.

Shearing, I guess is part of the chain of meat production. Don’t know about the over 70 bit. MPI are the arbitrators on the food side so contact them if in doubt.

If everybody played ball with this lockdown we could be free of the virus in 3 wks, or 4 wks.

And that's the problem, lots of people aren't playing ball. Beyond that we'd also need police-state powers like South Korea where the telcos monitored everyone's location via cell tower pings and the police broke up any gatherings of more than a few people, or Bulgaria which is running under 40-year-old Warsaw Pact chemical weapons attack protocols. With 100% compliance, four weeks might just, barely be enough. With the long tail of noncompliance, it'll be several months.

Wuhan is coming out of lockdown after around 10 weeks. With presumably high compliance. So we need to take a realistic view this ain't gunna be over in four weeks.

Funny how everyone else can see it.

We talked on the phone to a friend today who said she had just visited the local dairy to buy some milk and stamps. But nobody kept the required 2 metre distance apart and the shop was quite full of people doing things just like they always have. Nobody was wearing gloves or masks and nobody was seen using hand sanitiser after coming out of the shop.

Now I know that some supermarkets are going to some lengths to ensure that the virus is not spread from their staff to customers and vice versa. But, the corner dairy doesn't have the resources or the will to do this, so my advice would be to avoid them if possible. But, perhaps this dairy isn't representative of them all, so has anyone else been into one recently?

Has the Government stated their intention here? ie are we trying to stamp it out after this period if it looks possible after extensive testing or attempt to slow it down and maintain below r=1 and slowly expose people until vaccines etc are an option

Re-evaluation and likely/possible changes in the 'level' in attempt to keep under controlled parameters.

From MF quoting the Wellington Mayor:

"Parking – the City Council has turned off its metered parking system in the central city. This means motorists do not have to pay for on-street parking in the immediate future.

There will still be parking enforcement in the city and suburbs. Our focus will be on safe and considerate parking."

So parking is free but does anyone know what is meant by enforcement?  Is this the time limits at one parking slot?

Reason I ask is that I may have to drive into Wellington each day from the Wairarapa due to a change in work role  as the train/bus just won't work timing wise and it would be good to just park up and forget about the car for the rest of the day.

Edit:

Just answered my own question:

Metered parking system has been turned off for the immediate future. Parking time restrictions will not apply as they will not be enforced

My wife is doing exactly as you describe, from and to the same location.

Her understanding is that, as long as you aren't on a footpath or fire hydrant, you'll be fine.

Another stupid question. Since hunting and fishing is prohibited, is hiking allowed? Any official info? Would love to get away from everyone far far far in the mountains.

NZ First had a facebook post saying hunting solo was ok, don't let the lockdown ruin the roar.
