I haven't seen this discussed previously, but it appears independent fruit and vege shops are to close, meaning that it appears we can only get them from the supermarket. I see that Hort NZ are in discussions with them about this still. Considering the freshness and quality of some of it at the supermarket isn't great from my experience, and independent ones are likely to have different supply chains, some of which maybe smaller producers, I wonder what happens to all that fruit and veges? Normally we buy organic from farmers markets, but that also won't be an option.

We need to minimise the number of outlets opening and larger organisations (e.g. supermarkets) tend to have stronger compliance with things like hygiene measures. You won't die if you don't eat organic -- society have far greater things to worry about right now.

Mate we're all making sacrifices. I think you can deal with supermarket produce for a few weeks.

Geektastic:

Possibly. It’s a hypothetical question.

Tourists presumably can’t get to the airport to leave now.

You could easily make the same argument for these 10000 kiwis apparently about to turn up: they’ve known for weeks they should be back. Someone needs to shut the door.

So your solution is to make people stateless? Sounds viable.

There are people who have been trying to get home and can't - it's been increasingly difficult for some time.

They just can't find a way back - which is understandable with all the closed down hubs and borders. Unfortunately, New Zealand can't send an aeroplane to every large city in the world, and neither could people travel to these cities - other countries are under their own lockdown too.

People are not stateless. Statelessness is when the state either disappears or revoke someone's citizenship. This is not the case here.

If you are low immunity, what you eat matters. Also I found the fruit store was relatively empty, whereas the supermarket was packed. AS I live semi rural, we have lots of local fruit stalls nearby, but the big supermarket is a 20 mins driveaway.

But my point was more about these smaller food producers who are allowed to keep  producing food, as I understand it is considered an essential service, but it doesn't appear some will have an outlet to sell it, if they are selling direct to these small shops, rather than the the two big players. Also won't it mean more demand on the supermarkets supply chain. So wouldn't that be potentially mean a higher risk of fresh fruit and vege stocks running low?

I see the supermarket and Fresh produce sections of Moore Wilsons will still be open, which sell good quality produce which is good to see, so there is still an outlet there.

I don't think there was ever any evidence that organic will be of any impact on immunity levels. IF you can't go to a supermarket it's acceptable to make arrangements for someone to help by dropping the food back to you - leaving at some safe distance for collection.

Refusing to admit NZ citizens to NZ (which is what a number of people are suggesting) is rendering them stateless.

Regarding the closure of vegetable shops, butchers & (and Asian supermarkets?), along with the hospitality industry, the main supermarkets are going to have to handle a massively higher volume than usual.

Hope they are up to it...

Yes, this was basically my point. Hopefully there isn't any food waste with the others having to close, and it gets redistributed to the supermarkets etc. In the Wellington region we do also have Moore Wilsons, which offers a good alternative if you are wanting different food, and they also have a really good meat and produce section.

I don't know what you want us to tell you mate. You're saying something that just isn't true, you're welcome to look up the definition yourself if you like.

Of all the sacrifices being made over the next few months, food waste is the least of anyone's concerns. It sounds like you have a dog in this race, what's your real concern?

One of the fundamental rights of a citizen is to allow them to enter their own country. While it may not meet the textbook definition it meets the functional definition. Playing semantic games is dumb.

My concern is long term supply and I hate food being wasted without good reason, especially as many aren't able to afford good food. People are going to struggle too as it is, and  food banks are also running out of food, and that food could go to them.https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/412593/food-banks-face-covid-19-lockdown-issues-demand-high-supplies-low

We don't also want to end up needing ration books either, especially  if supplies become an issue due to previous panic buying which they hadn't planned for . We do also need to remember that access to good healthy food is going to be very important in keeping healthy through this, and fighting off any illness as we head into winter.
