Survival on ECMO is about 64% with viral pneumonia.

If we were to attempt to flatten the curve we would be needing a few tonnes of medical equipment from China with staff to run them.

Small sample number, but 5/6 Wuhan patients given ECMO died.

(suggests a reason why as well - but selecting patients means you're excluding patients - so ECMO isn't likely to save that many lives even if more machines and resources were available)

Yes - we should accept any help China can offer, they've been doing a lot in Italy etc.

I suspect New Zealand is, quite rightly, way down the priority list for countries supplying medical aid. We have few cases currently, and of those none requiring critical care. Most of Europe seems to be in a far more precarious position.

considered it when Italy went into crisis ?27 February. Australia went into crisis on ?March 10.

close border the day that Australia declared a state of (public health) emergency and Air NZ started to offer refunds, ?March 14.

EU closed borders on ?March 15. Taiwan closed borders on March 18.

don't think you can have entirely free of virus but certainly you needed to be ahead of the 8 ball

The Chinese Ambassador, Mdme Wu Xi, was on TV offering medical aid to NZ a couple of weeks ago.

I don't know exactly what aid she was offering but the offer was made.

I suppose the consulate is considered sovereign territory and so they've decided the lockdown doesn't apply to them.

Don't know who this caregiver is that you refer to.

Being quite cynical I would imagine the banks will be only too happy to cater for Mortgage Repayment Holidays as the interest will continue to be added to the principal bringing them more interest in the future.

Now if the banks were willing to suspend interest liability on loans that would be a different case entirely.

My wife had to go to Countdown (Barrys Point Road) this morning to do the shopping (not by choice - we timed things very poorly and had started to run out of things our young son needed).

It was apparently very quiet there, but an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Of note, they were still out of chicken, and we were only allowed to buy 2 tins of cat food. Per flavor, so that made it a bit easier, but that still seems a bit poorly thought out and may force people to shop more often.

There seems to be some confusion about when and where you are able to drive your car. For example, can you drive to the nearest beach assuming it's only about 10km away?

Or can you drive from home to the nearest aquifer to fill up your water bottles, assuming this is about 5km from home?

Sure, you can drive to the supermarket or dairy or pharmacy, but does it have to be to the nearest ones to where you live?

Here's Police Commissioner Mike Bush talking about these issues, he seems to think you can't drive to the beach or park for some fresh air:

Yeah, I think that's correct. It's just extending the mortgage out.

The Govt has some type of loan package as well which they are guaranteeing up to 80% and the banks carry the remaining 20% risk.

Not sure what that is about.

On the general topic of banks etc, we are in the middle of a real estate transaction that went from "Covid is happening to other people" to "We are in lockdown" between having the offer accepted and reaching the date by which conditions must be signed off.

We have - on the advice of our solicitors and the vendor's agent - formally requested that the transaction be frozen during the lockdown period because it is too difficult to satisfy conditions. ADLS has also suggested that the best way to deal is by pausing these things on the grounds that a 'working day' should not include a Covid lockdown day.

It is of course up to the vendor whether they agree to this.

I mention it in case anyone else is in a similar position - do not be afraid to ask the other side to halt the transaction temporarily. I suspect most reasonable vendors and purchasers will agree. No guarantees in life though!

Im hearing that. Its all in the mind. The virus risk didnt skyrocket last night at 11-59. The lockdown is a measure to help us be better placed on April 26th

Its actually safer to do the supermarket or pharmacy run now. Less people, enforcement/help re the 2 metres etc. Yet yesterday afternoon, Liquor stores full and crammed together as supermarkjets prpobably were as well

Its a bit strange, but its safer

Despite both radio and TV media saying there is no recycling collection in Auckland. Our recycling has just been collected. The Auckland City Council website said “collection as normal” so we put both bins out, and both have been done as normal.

I wonder if the confusion is with what will be done with the recycle-ables. My understanding was councils didn’t want staff standing at a conveyor belt sorting it. In which case it will go into landfill. An acceptable solution in the current circumstances (IMO).
