Ge0rge: I wonder how long before workers at critical infrastructure realise the bargaining positions they are now in and begin to threaten industrial action?

They would have to give the required notice.

And the Govt could give the required notice of who these scumbags are.

If someone decided they don't want to work, good luck making them.

I think you’ll find you can’t take industrial action during a declared emergency.

Edit: But the point is fair. Our emergency service workers are underpaid and undervalued and this period may go a way to showing that.

Everyone thinks they're underpaid compared with others.

Even top executives pulling in salaries in the millions think they're underpaid in comparison with executives elsewhere in the world doing a comparable job.

One good thing from this lock down is no religious door knockers.

Or power companies (Trustpower)   and very little spam as well.  Maybe the spammers have all died.

Organisers of pointless cattle conference that is the epicentre of an outbreak are still deflecting

Sure, it looks like the officials stuffed up pretty bad. But the point remains: at a time (early to mid-March -- when most of these delegates would have come to NZ) when health authorities around the world were telling people to stop non-essential travel (and when lots of other responsible conference organisers cancelled their conferences), why did they deliberately go ahead with something that would draw in people from all corners of the earth AND to then contribute to their dispersal widely across small, rural communities?

Dicks.

From Stuff:

Foodstuffs stores are giving uniformed emergency services and medical personnel priority at the checkout and external queues in any store, at any time nationwide.

The change takes effect on Friday at New World, Pak'n Save and Four Square shops around the country.

Any emergency service or medical professional wearing their uniform or carrying district health board, medical centre or proper identification will be given priority to enter the store, should the store have a line, and to go through the checkout line first.

Well done! Hope it works.

Pangolins as an intermediate host ...

BBC News - Coronavirus: Pangolins found to carry related strains

today

Smuggled pangolins have been found to carry viruses closely related to the one sweeping the world.

Scientists say the sale of the animals in wildlife markets should be strictly prohibited to minimise the risk of future outbreaks.

Pangolins are the most-commonly illegally trafficked mammal, used both as food and in traditional medicine.

In research published in the journal Nature, researchers say handling these animals requires "caution".

And they say further surveillance of wild pangolins is needed to understand their role in the risk of future transmission to humans.

Lead researcher Dr Tommy Lam of The University of Hong Kong said two groups of coronaviruses related to the virus behind the human pandemic have been identified in Malayan pangolins smuggled into China.

"Although their role as the intermediate host of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak remains to be confirmed, sale of these wild animals in wet markets should be strictly prohibited to avoid future zoonotic [animal to human] transmission," he told BBC News. ...

Still too many cars on the road to be only essential workers. Outside my house it sounds like a typical Sunday morning - plenty of traffic.

Well, yes. Like wolfs and dogs share 99% their DNA and the DNA difference between humans and chimps is only 1.2%...

Just wondering if anyone knows something we don't.

Friends are trying to go home to the US, flight on Sunday out of AKL, currently in South Island.

Got a message from US embassy saying according to the NZ govt, if they are not in AKL by midnight today, they won't be able to catch the flight on Sunday.

Domestic flights shutting down?

Have they got a death wish?  NZ is the one country that has a good chance of eradicating this virus from its shores.
