tdgeek: None have hit ICU until today in Nelson. Until today all few hospitalised were stable, some are not as stable today. No deaths. In the greater scheme of things, we are doing more than ok IMHO.

That Nelson patient has been in ICU for a few days now. As has been characterised elsewhere they were doing well until they suddenly decompensated needing mechanical ventilation.

Appreciate the update, thanks.

Taiwan started screening and quarantining travelers from Wuhan end of December 2019.

I don't know what if any diplomate links still exist between the NZ govt and the ROC but they could have warned us if there were anyone here able to listen. Clearly 5 eyes failed us and we need 5 ears as well.

Taiwan had been excluded from WHO even as an observer. So we should in future, if we haven't, set up information sharing.

There are numerous professional YouTubers who have carried on doing holiday and flight reports right up to a day or two ago.   I realise they depend on Youtube for their income but it is far from desirable.

Dingbatt:

When I watched the coverage on “One News” I was intrigued to see intrepid reporters out and about interviewing people getting their exercise. The reporter had a mike on the end of a boom so they were more than two metres away. But the mike, complete with a fluffy windshield appeared to be a lot closer. Within spitting distance as it were. I wonder if it is disinfected between interviews? And who packs it up at the end of the day.

I honesty wonder if they even considered that. Many people would think the risk of getting it off a park bench was very low. But we need to behave like we all have the virus, and not try to pass it on. Everytime someone leaves the house they risk passing on the virus.

IMO These reporters should also be at home instead of spending several hours outside a shop that was open.

In the early days it was very political. Internally (dont upset the voters), and externally (don't upset our trading partners.) Im not very aware of Taiwan's role or ability with Covid-19 (Learnt that lesson a while ago, my wife is from Wuhan, so difficult to get an unbiased view  :-)  )

End of the day, one would hope that there will be a lot of information sharing post Covid-19. It will happen again. In this case perhaps seasonally to a lesser degree, who knows.

neb: Interesting analysis from The Atlantic on why Trump's handling of things has been the way it is.

From the article:

"After listening to the president’s nearly-two-hour briefing on Monday—in which, among other things, Trump declared, “If it were up to the doctors, they may say … ‘Let’s shut down the entire world.’ … This could create a much bigger problem than the problem that you start off with”—a former White House adviser who has worked on past pandemics told me, “This fool will bring the death of thousands needlessly. We have mobilized as a country to shut things down for a time, despite the difficulty. We can work our way back to a semblance of normality if we hold out and let the health system make it through the worst of it.” He added, “But now our own president is undoing all that work and preaching recklessness. Rather than lead us in taking on a difficult challenge, he is dragging us toward failure and suffering. Beyond belief.”"

Nexstar Media Wire: Florida man warns others after fake COVID-19 relief check arrives in mail

A Florida man is sounding the alarm after he received what appeared to be a fake coronavirus relief check in the mail.

The massive $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package approved by the Senate Wednesday includes “stimulus checks” for many Americans, especially those facing financial difficulty as a result of the outbreak.

However, the House of Representatives still needs to approve the stimulus package, with a vote expected Friday. Once it passes, it will take roughly three weeks for those checks to be received.

That’s why Thomas Andrews knew the official-looking check that came in the mail Thursday was nothing but fishy.

...Andrews believes whoever sent him that check is trying to exploit the coronavirus crisis for financial gain.

...Along with the check is a letter telling people to come claim their “stimulus incentives” over the next ten days at a “temporary relief site” in Bushnell. The letter does show a couple of cars you can buy there with no money down.

...Andrews suspects it’s someone trying to sell used cars to make a quick buck.

Jaysus Lord. This woman is so dumb. I mean I want to use some stronger words but this is... ridiculous. Watch the whole thing, it's only three minutes to figure out why America is going to go down quicker than anywhere else:

I'm not sure what value you think you are adding by constantly slagging off the government. It's petty and worthless all it's doing is creating distrust of the people who the population need to follow if this is to get fixed.

Talk about the issues and stop the sniping. These are people trying to do an impossible job. There will be plenty of time for recriminations. Save it for after the recovery. You may even wish to run for office if you are convinced their job is simple and easy.

2020: A conman whose country is facing a massive catastrophe tells people about miracle cures (chloroquine) and an impending end to the troubles (churches packed by Easter). Large numbers of people who believe in his delusions die unnecessarily because of this.

* Goebbels, not Hitler. Hitler didn't have much to say any more by 1945, the false promises came from the Minister of Propaganda.
