Like I said, who sets CC rates? Banks or Visa/Mastercard? I actually don't know, Id suggest the latter if I had to be forced for an answer. But what Im picking up here is a blame game.
You'd be wrong. It's an internal decision.
Tinkerisk:
As a government you only have the choice between two scenarios: mitigation or suppression. The latter is more expensive and costs less lifes. If you can't afford suppression, there is only mitigation. That's what we currently see in Spain and Italy (and others countries next).
There is no "they" and "we" there is the same everywere in the world only at different stages. You and we do not perform better than others but time is valuable to act. And really to be honest, I wonder how medical DRs can still sit here in their armchairs when the hell will break out next.
I do agree, but in Italy and Spain, they have no choice, it got away. The higher death rates are due to people waiting for help, died before the help arrived. China had the same. Overwhelmed.

What do people think of this story? IMO We don't want to risk there being sick people working in supermarkets, whatever the illness is IMO, and those over 70 have already been told they need to stay at home I had thought.
Thats a hard one. They are probably not eligible for the subsidy. But then you force people, to work high risk. And they are low paid. What if they got the virus? 5 days sick pay then tough bikkies if they have worked there for 20 years?? (and built up a lot of sick pay, yes, exaggeration)
Put the sensible hat on. Make them eligible for the subsidy. They can decide not to work at 80% pay. Others can work for normal pay. Its a hard one
My mates son works for Novotel, also low pay. He faced being let go. Now they can work but as International arrivals go there he doesnt want to work.

What about eradication? I would have thought NZ was one of only few countries that could still achieve this, if we also do widespread testing so we know who has got it / had it. China appears to be going down this track, at least from official figures.
We can.

LOL you must be kidding. The banks are the last to make any kind of sacrifice in crises.
Apparently we all love to hate lawyers and banks. Thats ironic...
jfanning:
But the official word the government is stating is:
What does staying at home mean?
The Government has asked all people in New Zealand to stay at home to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
As long as you are not unwell, you can leave your house to:
- access essential services, like buying groceries, or going to a bank or pharmacy
- go to work if you work for an essential service
- go for a walk, or exercise and enjoy nature.
If you do leave your house, you must keep a 2 metre distance from other people at all times. Police may be monitoring people and asking questions of people who are out and about during the Alert Level 4 lockdown to check what they are doing.
There are three ways opportunities there for me to leave the house, and clear guidelines to follow when you do. That is fairly clear
So the officials are OK with you leaving your house if others in your bubble are sick, so long as you are not currently sick. Have they not heard of asymptomatic spread? So much for "don't be stupid" if their own advice is stupid.

The banks? Thanks for clarification. ANZ has reduced them and others substantially.

How do you get groceries if you're not near friends or family?

Thanks - did not realise this, but the balance has really swayed the other way here.. it's frustrating trying to read through the discussion only to see 7 posts each with a sentence take up most of the page.

Understandable. Ideally, people would post with at least two quotes if possible - but even better if replies were more than a single word reply/short sentence. We really want contributions...

Fair enough, how do I do that?

I understand. Ive been out. Contribute what I feel is worthwhile, but yes, I aware its one after the other. I would need to have two sessions of GZ up, copy from one to the other, then insert as needed? If so thats fine. The limit of quotes is a good measure tho
