Or the police are using their discretion and not arresting people for walking their dog. When everyone's an enforcement watchdog you're going to get a flood of complaints about things that aren't really an issue, or where the most appropriate thing is a warning because it's an oversight, not deliberate flouting of the rules. It'll sort itself out over time.

I know it's a minor thing, but we got a few bits of mail today. It's nice to have some signs that things are still running outside everyone's bubbles even with most other stuff locked down.

On a more positive note, apparently we now have 585 ICU beds on hand if need be. This is good to see. Assuming that 185 are in use for other non covid health issues. That means we have 400 in use for COVID patients. With a 5% ICU admission rate we can have 8000 cases before we are overwealmed. Much less dire than the 50 odd free we had a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately worldwide now we're getting a lot of cases. So here's an interesting discussion on graphing.

It makes the important point that when you're experiencing exponential growth, it's very hard to tell when it'll flatten (except when the entire population is infected or cured).

It also show that only two countries probably have this under control: China and South Korea. Good news is there's at least a couple days lag in this graph, for a number of reasons.

I recall when the UK were still in the hundreds of confirmed cases, experts suspected that the infected number was close to 10k. Based on what has happened since, it would appear they weren't far off.

I was doing a bit of analysis from the list of covid-19 positive people published by the MoH https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-current-situation/covid-19-current-cases/covid-19-current-cases-details and, curiously, the numbers don't match... there's only 58 cases listed there for 29th.

Scott Morrison has announced that after a phone call with Jacinda that Kiwis in Australia will be temporarily eligible for Centrelink payments. I'm glad to see that they've finally seen the light on this - especially with that excellent speech a couple days ago by Jacinda.

I personally can't think of a reason to do much about that except maybe people that moved with their families as kids but aren't a resident or citizen yet. If somebody actively chooses to move to Australia it is well known there is no welfare safety net, and they do so at their own risk. I have no sympathy for these people given what is now playing out. Personal responsibility!!!

That was my inspiration for doing the analysis I mentioned in my previous post. FWIW, yesterday afternoon we were at 47 new / 476 total, which put us down in the bottom left corner, possibly one of the pink dots above Lichtenstein's final n. Although we're still close to the exponential growth line, we appear to already be dipping away from it. :)
