Not targeted at anyone in particular, but motivated by a post a few days ago about someone getting into a debate about the rules with a cop and some other followup posts about similar subjects:

This is not a choose-your-own-adventure where you get to invent your own special-snowflake rules just for you. When you get to a red light, you stop and wait for it to go green even when there are no other cars on the road. You don't run the red light and then argue with the cop who pulls you over about the fact that there were no cars there and so there should be a special exception to the rules just for you.

Similarly, in terms of the cop "getting aggressive", that's because he's probably had to deal with an endless stream of snowflakes who all want an exception made just for them because they have some really good reason for not playing by the rules. Yes, you know better and yes he's being unreasonable and yes he's heard that from the last hundred people he's had to stop and is getting really tired of it. Just play by the rules and get over it, even if you know they're wrong and unreasonable and things would be so much better if you were in charge.

Health Minister Dr David Clark says 36 new intensive care beds at Christchurch Hospital’s new Hagley building are being fast tracked so they are available for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The Ministry of Health is working with contractor CPB and Canterbury DHB to enable access to the hospital’s ICU, ED Radiology and associated spaces within the next two weeks.

“We all need to continue to do our bit to break the chain of transmission and slow the spread of COVID-19,” Dr David Clark says.

“As we expect the number of cases to continue to increase this week, it’s vital our health services can respond effectively.

“Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity is a priority area as part of our COVID-19 health response to ensure good care for our most critically affected New Zealanders.

“Work at Christchurch Hospital Hagley is now being prioritised to bring forward the availability of ICU and supporting areas.

“The new $500 million hospital has 28 adult ICU spaces and eight child ICU spaces.

“Completion of ED Radiology and associated areas is also being prioritised as part of the DHB’s emergency response planning for COVID-19.

“With over 300 workers on-site, including 120 workers brought in from other projects, good progress has been made. Ensuring high quality standards on the build remains a top priority.

“I’m pleased to confirm, the Ministry handed over the ICU to Canterbury DHB earlier today and a blessing was held to mark the occasion. The DHB is working towards ICU being operational and available to take patients later next week.

“I’d like to thank everyone who is working during the Level 4 lockdown period to get the ICU finished, including contractors, consultants and DHB staff. Work will also continue to get the rest of the hospital ready for handover to the DHB later in April.

“This is the largest hospital ever built in New Zealand. Despite the challenges that come with a project this large and complex, I’m pleased Christchurch Hospital Hagley is preparing to open. It’s a fantastic facility which will serve the community well into the future,” David Clark said.

Wellington Mayoral update 30 March 2020:

Several things to talk with you about today.

Lots of wonderful Wellingtonians want to help other people in need, which is awesome. However we have to do this right if we are to stop inadvertent transmission of this deadly disease. We have been given this guidance today as part of our Civil Defence responsibilities.

The guidance is clear: Everyone must remain in self-isolation during the Lockdown, with the exception of established organisations identified as “Essential Services”. This is a requirement set by the Government.

Abiding by the lockdown is critical to breaking the chain and preventing further transmission of COVID-19.

Only people working in an organisation that has been deemed an “Essential Service” by MBIE can coordinate a welfare response at the community and household level. Spontaneous community volunteers are not on the essential services list, so – sorry – you cannot do this.

1. From 8 am tomorrow a person needing welfare assistance can call their local council to request welfare assistance or use the phone number listed on the WREMO.NZ “Seeking Support” page during normal business hours. A call back form will also available for people to submit requests outside of business hours.

2. The local council will refer the query to their local welfare team or partner organisation (e.g. Salvation Army, City Mission etc) to deliver the necessary assistance.

3. The council welfare team will keep track of all assistance requested and given.

4. Partner organisations must be provided with guidance on personal protection and equipment following the Ministry of Health information.

So in summary volunteers must be part of an approved essential service. In Wellington this includes: Volunteer Wellington, City Mission, local food banks, Age Concern, religious support groups, counselling services and Student Volunteer Army etc.

Please check with your volunteer coordinator if you are unsure if your programme is an essential service provider.

The Council is supporting these essential services with the supply of personal protection equiment – such as masks, gloves and sanitisers.

I'd like to remind everyone that there is no Wellington City recycling collection while we are in lockdown conditions.

Our collection involves extensive hand sorting. Normally this gives us by far the highest level of uncontaminated, and therefore usable, recycling in the country but with Covid 19 around we just cannot responsibly continue.

If you can, please wash all your recycling thoroughly and carefully store it for recycling collection when we come back. If you can’t I am afraid it will need to go out in the rubbish. Rubbish collection will continue as usual.

Sadly this afternoon World of Wearable Art announced the cancellation of this September-October shows.

WoW is a spectacular, iconic event that draws thousands of visitors and Wellingtonians alike. It also takes a lot of planning and preparation over many months, and that is clearly not possible in the current environment.

I will look forward to WoW being back bigger and better than ever in 2021.

In the meantime WE Wellington and our wonderful creative community are looking at ways of bringing more of the arts - virtually - to a Lockdown audience.

Rates - I know many people and businesses who have lost some or all of their income are very anxious about Council rates.

As I have said before, this is a rainy day indeed, and your Council is working on a package to significantly reduce the impact of rates and charges on our community.

We will make some further decisions with immediate benefits over the next week and a bit. You will see some coverage in tomorrow’s Dominion Post.

Finally most of us are doing a fantastic job, staying safe and staying in our bubbles. However there are a small minority of people not following the rules.

We need to look after each other. We are all in this together.

If we do our job, stay in our bubbles, keep at least two metres separation, exercise locally, and take only essential trips for essential supplies to the supermarket, pharmacy, or doctor, and follow all the hygiene protocols – washing hands, coughing or sneezing into our elbows, not touching our faces. If we all do our job we will break the chain of infection. We will save lives.

We will get undoubtedly get out of lockdown quicker.

We will also inflict less damage on our economy, and our standard of living will be much better. So please stay safe, stay separate, stay local, follow the hygiene rules.

An alliance of patient organizations denounced Thursday government officials who used their positions to get tested for the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and defied quarantine rules.

The Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations issued the statement after Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, who tested positive for COVID-19, violated his home quarantine protocol and brought his pregnant wife to Makati Medical Center.

PAPO—a coalition advocating for universal access to health care and allied services for patients, including persons with disabilities—said Pimentel’s move endangered the lives of health workers and the public.

“This behavior seems to come from a feeling of privilege and entitlement. We feel this is a betrayal of his duty to protect the Filipino people, especially the patients and healthcare workers who are in most need of our attention in this crucial time in our history,” PAPO said.

MMC called out Wednesday the “irresponsible and reckless action of the senator,” saying he should have set an example for his constituents.

The coalition of patient organizations also slammed the public officials who were tested despite most of them being asymptomatic and the lack of testing kits in the country.

“There seems to be another enemy of the state. Some of our government officials, their family and friends cornered the COVID-19 test kits with brazen boldness bypassing protocols, undermining key strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and depriving those who most need the life-saving tests,” PAPO said.

“To politicians who want to be treated like VIPs, we say, ENOUGH. Country first before egotistic political entitlement. Let’s follow the rules you set,” it added.

A conservative evangelical pastor has suggested to his followers that God will help multiply their toilet rolls amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a clip posted to Twitter, pastor Rodney Howard-Browne, leader of the Florida-based Revival Ministries International, told his congregation that "this should be a time of supernatural sustenance, where what you have in your hand will multiply."

"And every day there will be multiplications," he continued. "You look at your toilet paper and you think I'm going to run out of toilet paper, but you have another roll where that one was and you don't know how did that even take place."

Howard-Brown added: "Are the toilet paper rolls getting together and having families now? What is taking place? When you look again, there's still enough. You think you're going to run out but when you look again there's still enough. That's supernatural sustenance."

"We are not stopping anything," he said. "I've got news for you, this church will never close. The only time the church will close is when the Rapture is taking place.

"This Bible school is open because we're raising up revivalists, not pansies," Howard-Browne added.

He also told his congregation to shake each other's hands, despite the federal government urging social distancing in an attempt to contain the virus. "Well I know they don't want us to do this, but just turn around and greet two, three people. Tell them you love them, Jesus loves them," Howards-Browne said, according to the website Right Wing Watch. "Listen, this has to be the safest place. If you cannot be saved in church, you in serious trouble."

If somebody actively chooses to move to Australia it is well known there is no welfare safety net, and they do so at their own risk.

Nothing you have said does anything to override this. People travel overseas and take out travel insurance. In this case it is like travelling overseas and you can't get insurance because of a pre-existing condition, but you still do it anyway. People happy to swan off to Australia thinking its all smiles and nothing could possibly go wrong, happy to live a better lifestyle and (generally) higher pay, but when it does hit the fan then its not their fault and someone else should fix it for them.

Your argument would have merit if Australia said ok, since you get no benefit you don't have to pay any tax. Instead they are eating from both sides of the plate. Nevermind that those taxpaying Kiwis are supporting a lot of Australian beneficiaries.

My argument has merit full stop. Once again;

1. Yes, Australia's policy of taxing Kiwis but not offering (previously) social welfare support is sucky, but this is FULLY overridden by the fact that,

2. It is a known policy, anybody moving from New Zealand to Australia to live and work takes on all risk that if they lose their job there is no safety net.

This is not a new policy, if people choose to go there then they choose to take the risk.

Is he talking about breaking into smaller groups for living arrangements or smaller groups to 'party'? I can't see any point in smaller parties if they are still sharing the same kitchen and bathroom facilities. If he is talking about living arrangements, then why are people getting upset about the party? Surly all backpacking accommodation are in the same situation, even the ones that have not been filmed having parties.

they interviewed a woman the other night, couldn't understand why they had put her in quarantine. she arrived from overseas, and lived in Dunedin. there was no way for her to get home, yet she couldn't grasp it.

i do believe that they would have said something like that. society as a whole is pretty self entitled.

I have not read the article. Dont know anything about the place. Hotel food can be really awful. Menu selection can be very limited. Hotel star and restaurant star are two different things. So many places just focus on making things look like a fancy meal on a plate and actual food can be terrible.
