kingdragonfly: Not good news.

A new study has been published in Nature.com.

It involves nine coronavirus cases in Germany.

It suggests that infected people can shed the virus at high levels during the first week of infection.

Yes, the peak shedding is about 2.5 days after infection, hence 2-3 before first symptoms. The typical symptoms evolve 5.2 to 5.8 days after infection. Then, 10 days after infection the thing CAN get quickly worse. This is the critical time - don't hesitate to ask for medical help when in self-quarantine.

A little bit concerning - but not surprising:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00984-8

Cats can be infected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and spread it to other cats, but dogs are not really susceptible to the infection, according to researchers in China. The team, at Harbin Veterinary Research Institute in China, also concludes that chickens, pigs, and ducks are not likely to catch the virus.

It's a pre-print, but the data looks good - it's copping a lot of negative comments because people love cats and it doesn't "prove" that human to cat or cat to human transmission can (or is likely to) occur, but that's not what they were specifically trying to find out - now is the time to find that out - with some urgency.

It looks like the reality of the situation is starting to hit home to leadership in USA. VP Mike Pence believes that Italy is the closest model to USA right now. Trump's tone has shifted a full 180 degrees with not a lot of optimism left in his latest address (although he is still wildly optimistic with his time-frames, predicting just 2 painful weeks).

Trump has not always been clear on the severity of the novel coronavirus, inaccurately equating the contagion to seasonal influenza and suggesting that the country could "reopen" by Easter. He later said the April 12 Easter date was an aspirational goal.

But during Tuesday's briefing at the White House, the president clearly walked those comments back, stating that the coronavirus is "not the flu. It's vicious." Trump said the next two weeks will be "very, very painful" for the country.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the task force coordinator, said models based on Italy's data project at least 100,000 Americans will die in the next few weeks as a result of the virus.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, an immunologist, stressed that although mitigation efforts could help lower that number, it's a reality Americans should prepare for.

And unsurprisingly, they react by ramping-up anti-chinese propaganda:

China has concealed the extent of the coronavirus outbreak in its country, under-reporting both total cases and deaths it’s suffered from the disease, the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report to the White House, according to three U.S. officials.

The officials asked not to be identified because the report is secret, and they declined to detail its contents.

It's very convenient timing to "leak" information from a classified report that nobody will ever see.

Sidestep:

That, along with deCODE's study in Iceland showing up to 50% of infections are asymptomatic, is probably a good argument for everyone to wear a mask in public.

The problem with wearing a mask in public is how many masks do the public have and do they properly remote/dispose of the masks each time you go out?

Note that Pastor Rodney Howard Browne is active in New Zealand and Australia

NY Daily News: Arrest warrant out for Florida pastor who held packed church services despite coronavirus social distancing guidelines

...“His reckless disregard for human life put hundreds of people in his congregation at risk and thousands of residents who may interact with them this week in danger,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said during a press conference Monday.

“They have access to technology allowing them to livestream their services over the internet and broadcast to their 4,000 members from the safety of their own homes, but instead they chose to gather at church.”

...Despite warnings from police and social distancing guidelines from both the CDC and Gov. Ron DeSantis, Howard-Browne went ahead with Sunday’s services. After backlash, he defended his decision.

“We brought in 13 machines that basically kill every virus in the place,” Howard-Browne said in a YouTube video. “If they sneeze it shoots it down like at 100 miles per hour and it will neutralize it in a split second.”

The controversial pastor has previously claimed that the Christchurch mosque shootings were a “false flag” operation.

So now we're meant to keep our cats in? This is far easier said than done after the first hour of having a cat wailing at the door to get out.

Metro UK: Medical fetish site donates entire stock of disposable scrubs to the UK's NHS

A medical fetish company says it has donated its entire stock of disposable scrubs to the NHS. MedFet UK did it after being contacted by procurement representatives struggling to find the right equipment amid the coronavirus pandemic....
Today we donated our entire stock of disposable scrubs to an NHS hospital.

It was just a few sets, because we don’t carry large stocks, but they were desperate, so we sent them free of charge.

We have been contacted this week by representatives of NHS procurement all over the country, trying to source basic protective equipment and clothing.

When we, a tiny company set up to serve a small section of the kink community, find ourselves being sought out as a last-resort supplier to our National Health Service in a time of crisis, something is seriously wrong. In fact, it’s scandalous.

Let’s be under no illusions, this is the result of a decade of chronic underfunding and cuts which has left the NHS barely able to cope under normal circumstances, much less when faced with the onslaught of a global pandemic. It did not, and should not, have to be this way.

So when it’s all over…and the doctors, nurses and other staff have done an amazing job (as they undoubtedly will despite the circumstances)…let’s not forget, or forgive, the ones who sent the NHS into this battle with inadequate armour and one hand tied behind its back.

You don't know my cat. You know what it's like to be stuck on a plane with a crying baby? Try doing that for 4 weeks straight.

Too early to say that.  When I said that it "wasn't surprising" that cats could contract Covid-19 - that said in context that it was shown that cats could also contract (very similar) SARS.  But AFAIK there wasn't any evidence that cats were a vector in transmission of SARS to humans.  This time though - there are probably already millions of people infected with C-19, vs only thousands who were infected with SARS.
They probably gave the cats a high dose of the Covid19 virus - more concerning IMO than the fact that cats acquired an infection was that cat to cat transmission occurred.

Extra care with close contact with (any) animals was recommended early on in this pandemic.

Oviously the "wet markets" were encouraged by the Chinese government by a protein shortage, and should have been banned after the SARS outbreak, but it would have been worse, if China did nothing during this outbreak.

Coronavirus: China lockdown may have blocked 700,000 virus cases
