Some stats out of the Netherlands.  At the end of Feb every Covid-19 patient on average was infecting 3 others.  This is when physical distancing and added hygiene procedures started in earnest.  By 16 March the number was 1 infection from each existing patient.  With the subsequent lockdown similar to NZ (but started a bit earlier I think) the number is now down to 0.3.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

kingdragonfly: Oviously the "wet markets" were encouraged by the Chinese government by a protein shortage, and should have been banned after the SARS outbreak, but it would have been worse, if China did nothing during this outbreak.

Bauer Media is closing down its New Zealand operations.

Bauer Media has announced it will shutter its New Zealand operations due to the "severe economic impact of COVID-19". An email from CEO Brendon Hill to staff said:

"We understand the New Zealand Government's decision to move to COVID-19 Level 4, but it has put our business in an untenable position. Publishing in New Zealand is very dependent on advertising revenue and it is highly unlikely that demand will ever return to pre-crisis levels."

A statement from Bauer Media said the firm carried out an urgent review of its New Zealand operations and considered all options to keep part or all the business open, including engaging with the New Zealand Government.

Hill added, "An active search is underway to find buyers for our New Zealand assets, including our many iconic titles, however, so far an alternative owner has not been found."

In New Zealand Bauer publishes titles including The New Zealand ListenerKia Ora, North & South, Metro, Home NZ, Your Home & Garden, NZ Woman’s Day, New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, The Australian Women’s Weekly NZ, and Fashion Quarterly.

Bauer Media Group has confirmed its intent to close the New Zealand business to its staff and that funding will be provided to enable all staff to be paid their full redundancy and leave entitlements.

Well that was sombering.

I think I'll curl up in my bed and read Mark Twain's "The Mysterious Stranger"

Just read this morning, quite interesting and pretty rapid. I think several businesses where there was a gradual downturn (print media, retail, etc) in the last couple of years will just do the same.

I'd probably recommend that people ignore the ravings of that Republican Senator in the Australian 60 Minutes piece but, aside from that, it is sobering indeed. Being a liberal Hong Konger, I've never had much liking for the Chinese Communist Party and the way they've treated the outbreak (a lot of the details in the 60 Minutes piece have been fairly widely reported in reputable Asian media) makes me despise them even more.

Medical workers transferred the bodies of people who had died after contracting the virus to a temporary morgue in Brooklyn on Monday.

THERE IS A MAJOR ISSUE VISIBLE ON THIS PICTURE TO BE AWARE OF!

The guy wearing protection stuff has direct contact with his phone and contamines himself! NEVER USE YOUR PHONE LIKE THIS - AGAIN NEVER!

Be aware that your smart phone can show up to 3 times more contamination stuff than a toilet lid (most is harmless but you don't know in these days).

When I worked at The Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, I preceptored a first year nurse. During an accreditation for a procedure of taking bloods from a central venous line (CVL), which is a highly sterile and aseptic procedure, she broke sterility 3 times. Touched bedside curtain as it got in the way, wiped her brow and then touched the ½in non sterile area going around the outside of the procedure trolleys work surface. Each time she had to re-glove with sterile gloves. Needless to say I failed her. Five years later she was a ward educator and whenever I was around and she had new nurses she would say that I yelled at her. She then would explain the reason for my raised voice. She was a great educator and a lovely person.

There's also a problem that Xi believes in Traditional Chinese Medicine, some of which uses bits and pieces of animals not usually thought of as "food".

I just don't see how this is important right now. Why focus on what happened in the early days of the pandemic? This is something to come back to in a few weeks or months. Right now the focus needs to be on right now, and the immediate future. Also, I don't trust any American source any more than I trust a Chinese source (I don't trust either of them).

It's a discussion board and most of us are just sitting at home. There's a difference between legitimate call outs versus every single post being just endless negativity and being a form of "Oui! Stop it!"

kingdragonfly: Not good news.

A new study has been published in Nature.com.

It involves nine coronavirus cases in Germany.

It suggests that infected people can shed the virus at high levels during the first week of infection.

What is "shed" in this context? Transmit?

it's important because it highlights how seriously it needs to be taken and what mistakes we shouldn't be making. There's nothing ilegit in that report.
