When I read that earlier today I thought that while the Navy brass may not like him, he's probably got the undying respect of his crew, and other crews in the Navy, for putting them before the Navy's PR requirements.

What they (crew) think doesn't matter. They're there to do what they're told to do - without questioning it.

Excellent post! One very small addendum:

Practice this at home, at length. Learn how to put on the mask, take off the mask, and importantly, how to act while wearing the mask. Any mask that performs serious amounts of filtering can be quite difficult to breathe through, so you need to get used to what it's like to have your breathing impeded for 30, 60, 90 minutes at a time. You also need to find out what you can and can't do while wearing a mask, e.g. engaging in strenuous activity will be a no-no, so you need to calibrate how far you can go at home before you need to apply it in practice.

neb: Was talking to a neighbour, retired nurse who signed up, and she had some interesting data points:

* The attrition rate is going to be a factor, once a medical worker gets infected they're sent into quarantine so you need to replace them with someone who's not infected. At some point, see "USA", you run out of replacements. This is why keeping medical workers safe is so incredibly important.

* They may pull people currently in med school into service if required. This could lead to a shortage of trained replacements in a few years since the new-graduate rate is tuned to match the retirement rate.

* Some stuff is really difficult to do safely, e.g. for a home visit you need to stay outside the home and do as much as possible on the phone, go in for 15 minutes max, and then change all PPE and clothes before you move to the next home. In other words one set of fresh clothes for each home visited. I wonder if they need donations of clothing to swap through?

As others have pointed out, I'm amazed at the number of people who have responded, particularly since they're in a higher-risk bracket than younger medical people.

Not completely the story. I have a niece who's a head nurse in rural Texas. She's already had patients lie to fully protected front line workers about their condition, so that they could cut in front of long lines. Once past the doors, all other health care workers were unprotected, except for gloves.

She's suspects she been infected, but hasn't been tested, due to a lack of tests, even for health professionals.

So she cares for only known Covid patients, and isolates at home.

She seemed pretty nonchalant about it.

Most people would have no idea that the expression "shoot the messenger" originated with ancient Chinese history. I doubt you did, till you Googled it.

I doubt anyone thought "the Chinese approach to Covid-19 management" wouldn't have construed it was about the current Chinese government.

They said in WWII that loose lips sunk ships.

Here it's inaccurate speech promulgates racist views, and encourages racist actions. Even Trump no longer calls it the Chinese virus.

From what I'm hearing today, most have moved beyond "masks may protect healthy wearer from the virus" to "masks may protect others from the potentially infected wearer."

As I understand it, if someone's already infected even a bandana captures many of the droplets being exhaled.

I've heard at least some grocery stores in Los Angeles hand you a mask just for this purpose: to protect the food and others from you.

As mentioned frequently in this thread, virus will slip through most masks, either because their fabric is not fine enough, or the masks is ill-fitting, mishandled, or not being replaced frequently enough.

Given that they are all volunteers, I'd say that the commander has his first priority the safety of his crew. Maybe they can start a give-a-lot page for him?

You bring up a good point. I didn't think that anyone who had the virus, was allowed to go out and go for a walk?. But maybe they need a directive on that to make sure that anyone who is sick should stay at home, and exercise inside their house. We also don't want to be passing colds or flu either, because that may put a demand on the health system for some people. IMO the 2 metre rule also needs to take into consideration wind and direction, especially in places like Wellington. I would have thought that if it was windy and you were downwind of someone, then those water droplets could travel further than normal?

I think everyone will agree Trump and Xi are attempting to rewrite history.

If mentioning that the Chinese figuratively "shot the messenger", Dr. Li Wenliang, during the early days is racist, I guess it's racist to say Trump downplayed the virus, hoping it would be miraculously cured.

When compared to Trump, Xi is still acting more responsibly than Trump.

Comparing Xi to Trump sets a pretty low bar. It's like saying "sure Judge, my client killed his wife, but at least he resisted the temptation to cook and eat her, and he did clean the carpets."

Xi didn't close the "wet markets" after the SARS outbreaks, and his early response to the coronavirus outbreak is far from flawless. He did screw up. It may be pointless, since it's "water under the bridge" but it's not racist. It's history.

Im sure than can be but where? Right now we are not being overwhelmed by the virus. The bigger question is why are GP practices becoming non viable?
