I have a friend who is into alternative everything. She is a good person and her magical beliefs are fairly harmless (I think!). Now she has sent me a link to a 2 1/2 hour video which comes from or is connected in some way (if I understand correctly) to 'Q Anon' and is forecasting a three-day or so shutdown of the Internet soon.

I don't believe any of this stuff and I don't follow it and there is no way I am going to devote time to this video but I would like to know what she is talking about. Is there anyone here who can tell me more about this? Is it the latest conspiracy theory?

Batman:

without sounding doomsday-like, i'm just trying to put the facts out there vs feelings. i'm saying facts are unknown, but feelings are aplenty.

your article says we went hard and early, harder and earlier than most. but it doesn't suggest it is working or it's not working, because i don't think anyone can see the future.

i said time will tell. i think the PM agrees. this is what PM said:

"At the moment, it's a bit too early to say. "

"All the data we're sharing with you, I'm getting as well."

With all the modelling data we have, it's too early to say. Of course I'd love to be wrong.

why is it all so hard to predict? probably because of: asymptomatic transmission

are we doomed? no. the weapon to counter that is mass testing apparently.

Again I must disagree with you. Where are those facts you refer to above? It's your interpretation of data. Not facts. Get away from the hyperbole of the article title and it does a pretty good job of showing - through the use of graphical data - that we, as a country are doing better than most and that some countries are trending away from exponential increases.

@sqishy:

So we all stay home, we use more water, electricity and gas. These utility companies seem to be keeping quiet while they reaps the benefits of increased revenue.

On the other hand retail shops, offices, cafes and restaurants are closed. So they may not be reaping all those benefits, right?

@sqishy:

Our rates have not reduced albeit we don't use libraries or other council run community funded and we aren't damaging the roads as much.

Not sure about other councils but I follow the WCC feed and they are pursuing options of either postponing rates or give a general discount to every property.

I'd rather see you point the positive instead of coming up with these baseless assertions.

At some point sympathy for Americans runs completely dry. For me this is that point. This is so utterly absurd I really am struggling to believe it's true.

Sympathy runs out with things like these:

US accused of 'modern piracy' after diversion of masks meant for Europe:

"About 200,000 N95 masks made by the manufacturer 3M were diverted to the US as they were being transferred between planes in Thailand, according to the Berlin authorities who had ordered the masks for the police force. Andreas Geisel, the interior minister for Berlin state, described the diversion as “an act of modern piracy” and appealed to the German government to demand Washington conform to international trading rules. “This is no way to treat trans-Atlantic partners,” Geisel said. “Even in times of global crisis there should be no wild west methods.”"

US 'wants 3M to end mask exports to Canada and Latin America:

"A major US mask manufacturer, 3M, says the government has asked it to stop exporting US-made N95 respirator masks to Canada and Latin America. The request had "significant humanitarian implications", it warned, and could prompt other countries to act in kind. On Thursday, the US invoked the Korean War-era Defence Production Act to demand that 3M provide more masks.

In a statement on Friday, 3M said the government had invoked the act "to require 3M to prioritise orders from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) for our N95 respirators", and had also requested that 3M import more respirators made in its overseas factories into the US. It said it supported both moves.

However, 3M added that the government also requested that it stop exporting respirators made in the US to Canada and Latin America. "There are significant humanitarian implications of ceasing respirator supplies to healthcare workers in Canada and Latin America, where we are a critical supplier of respirators," it said."

Your friend is not harmless. Spreading QAnon bullshit is evil.

The USA is now allowing the purchase of KN95 masks from China.  These aren't certified to US but Chinese standards.

She has been a good and generous friend. I actually know little about QAnon BS. I assume it has to do with right-wing extremist conspiracy theories. She has never gone down that route. She is into magical healing stuff but that is all.

Each US state is bidding against each other to purchase ventilators etc. Madness. Oh, no, it's capitalism.

This type of magical thinking is NEVER harmless. It often appears harmless in normal times, and is easily ignored. In times of crisis like this these types of beliefs are very dangerous. They must be stamped out mercilessly.

One magical thought leads to another.  It demonstrates an inability for critical thinking.

China, which appears to have curbed the epidemic through draconian restrictions that paralyzed the country for two months, will hold a national mourning on Saturday for "martyrs" who died in the fight against the epidemic, the official Xinhua news agency reported separately on Friday.

Three minutes of silence will be observed at 10 a.m. (0200 GMT) on April 4 across the country "while air raid sirens and horns of automobiles, trains and ships will wail in grief," Xinhua said.

Well, I'd said they are victims of the CCP's management but martyrs will do if it leads to political change.

I called 105 police non-urgent yesterday to notify a road safety issue. One of the menu options was reporting covid violations. There was a 15 minute wait for the standard option. The issue was a little more urgent than 15 min so I had to call 111 unfortunately.

I thought 105 and police in general would have excess capacity at this time. Maybe not at all.

I've done a quick plot of total cases over time by DHB (below). Care in interpretation is required due to (1) these being raw rather than standardised to the population size of each DHB, however at this stage standardisation likely isn't appropriate (2) DHBs not being the perfect way to slice regions.

From a lockdown perspective at a regional level it is my belief that if a particular region shows evidence of a flat line near the end of the lockdown there will be higher probability of that region being able to drop to Alert Level 3. At this stage from the data it definitely appears that certain regions have a greater chance of largely eliminating new cases of COVID-19 before others.

Nice but an interactive graph is better for the 8% of men with colour blindness.

Is there a JS version somewhere?
