My personal view is the $1,000 fine is insufficient. Should be more like 20-30k+ and mandatory detention in a dedicated covid19 holding cells either at the local police station or elsewhere in the country with others that flout the law for a minimum of 21 days.

I see that someone who wasn't infectious was jailed for 1 month.

"Sergeant Grant Lord, of Timaru, said ... under Ministry of Health rules a breach of Covid-19 guidelines was a stand alone offence. ... The penalty for a breach was a $1000 fine"

Sgt Lord does not appear to be particularly well informed ...

All of those processed so far are negative, according to the MoH media release added to their website minutes ago. More happening today, two supermarket sites in Auckland.

Amazon fires two more employees who were openly critical of working conditions during pandemic

Two additional employees who were publicly critical of Amazon’s warehouse conditions amid the COVID-19 pandemic have been fired by the company...

...At least 74 for the retail giant’s warehouses and fulfillment centers have tested positive for the virus.

A spokesperson for the company told TechCrunch, “We terminated these employees for repeatedly violating internal policies.”

Amazon has not specified the violation, though the company notably has policies prohibiting public discussion of business practices without executive approval.

Bezos details Amazon’s COVID-19 testing plans in shareholder letter

Amazon-built testing labs that were announced last week. The executive notes in the letter that the company is considering “regular testing of all Amazonians, including those showing no symptoms.” The letter explains that, obviously, regular testing would be ideal to stop the disease’s spread, as many cases are non-symptomatic.

It’s not entirely clear whether such testing would be mandatory, nor is it entirely clear where mandatory testing of employees showing no symptoms would fall legally. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s recently released ADA guidelines for the COVID outbreak, “During a pandemic, ADA-covered employers may ask such employees if they are experiencing symptoms of the pandemic virus. For COVID-19, these include symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath or sore throat.”

Of course, limited availability of testing has rendered the issue somewhat moot. What Amazon is building, however, is a testing lab designed specifically to test its own employees, in order to prohibit the virus’s spread both within its own ranks and to the outside world. The company, after all, is a kind of retail lifeline for many Americans currently staying at home.

Employees in at least 74 warehouse/fulfillment centers have tested positive for the virus, which is capable of living on cardboard for 24 hours and plastics for multiple days. The virus could potentially be transmitted through boxes and other surfaces.

The thing is that it isn't really random, nor testing the people that probably should be tested, so it doesn't surprise me that they have come back negative. Especially as the test isn't supposed to be very accurate unless you have symptoms according to the DG early on, which was apparently the explanation for not testing other passengers on the plane that were on board the plane with people but didn't have symptoms. . There was an article from an expert about how crude this method was and that it wouldn't really show much, but I can't find that article any more. I am guessing these tests are going to be presented to the government as an indication that it isn't really spreading in the community. But we still had 13 new cases today, which IMO is a concern this far into lockdown. Unfortunately they still don't appear to be telling us where all these new cases are occurring, in terms of what sort of people are being infected. Guessing some are from resthomes, some are medical staff?. It appears once this virus gets it's foot in the door somewhere, it is rampant.
