Dingbatt:

This will take the place of the paper diary I have been using to keep track of where I’ve been ...

I was out and about across the Wellington region last Friday and Google Maps accurately recorded my location movement throughout the day.

So I'm happy for my phone to silently keep my diary for me. Technology is so much easier than paper.

And for those concerned about privacy of information, there is a global pandemic and your health/life is at risk - which is more important to you? You can always disable location tracking once/if the risk subsides and normality returns.

I had a chat with my manager and the co-owner of the business I work at. She hadn't logged into the MBIE site to register the Business Contacts:

https://www.business.govt.nz/covid-19/contact-tracing

So it is a bit convoluted to sign in and get started as you need your RealMe account associated to your NZBN number. I think the uptake will be slow as that journey from MBIE isn't easy.

My company is no longer actively trading but I went through the process of registering and printing off a poster which I stuck to the front door (our residential home is registered as our company office after all). I can't see any downside in doing this. I wonder why they disqualified private homes when they rolled this out?

If the data is being stored in AWS Sydney then I am most unhappy. We are already aware that the data would be subject to Australian law. Are we also gifting to Amazon email addresses etc for use later on?

This solution, including Consumer’s personal information and anonymised information, is
hosted and stored using Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the ap-southeast-2 (Sydney)
region.

This is a Ministry owned sub-tenancy of the main Ministry of Health AWS tenancy
which enforces a number of security, audit, and policy controls.

34. Data stored within AWS is encrypted. The Ministry controls access to the encryption
keys and the data.

35. The source code and high-level architecture for initial design of the solution has been
reviewed by the Government Communications Security Bureau’s National Cyber
Security Centre and an independent All of Government security supplier and designed in
collaboration with Amazon Web Services.

Doesn’t even work with LastPass.

Other than that, seems ok.

Yes that is misleading.

For an app that is all about supreme trust that would be a poor start.

Final conclusion... app is a waste of time because it doesn’t eliminate duplication...

Do I still need to sign in to any register kept by the business I am visiting?

In addition to signing in with NZ COVID Tracer, you should continue to sign in to any contact tracing register maintained by the businesses or other locations that you visit.

If I have to sign in, I’m am not going to bother with the app.

The account is stored. Your check-ins are not.

@surfisup1000: Final conclusion... app is a waste of time because it doesn’t eliminate duplication...

People are exaggerating their bias. The app is to facilitate tracing. An initial tracing interview can take anywhere from four to six hours. In that time you have to remember all the places you visited in the last few weeks.

There's no way you will achieve that without an app to help you.

People, put your bias aside and think just a bit on how much time this app can save when needed.

Set up Authy as MFA, but the app-icon within Authy shows the Australian COVIDSAFE icon
