Clearly, someone has a very different idea of what quarantine means than I do.

To me, it is tantamount to a benign prison. You cannot mix with other 'guests', you cannot leave the premises because burly fellows with dogs, tasers etc are there to prevent you. You cannot abscond to attend a gang tangi. You cannot drive yourself to Wellington. Etc.

What it isn't is a voluntary stay in a hotel on your own recognisance.

There are two levels of isolation for people coming into NZ:

1. Quarantine, which is basically locked in a room, is for people with symptoms

2. Mandatory isolation, which allows contact-free exercise outside and exemptions, is for people without symptoms

And the second should be discontinued asap leaving quarantine for all entries to the country.

Can do that or get someone who manages it to actually manage it. I see a travel expert tells us that wearing a mask on a flight is too inconvenient. Thats the human element that you are always fighting against. And level 4 was too long as was 3 as was 2. And of course we want travel bubbles weeks ago. Some experts woudl have had us in level 1 in a month, then what?

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1937000/returnees-from-nz-had-fevers

This is concerning:

Four Thais returning from New Zealand were found to have a high fever on their arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport on Wednesday night.

Health and airport authorities said the four returnees were taken to a hospital after health screening at the airport detected high body temperatures.

Unsure what to make of this. If they are Covid19 cases then it seems like this could be a major problem?

Management 101
Do a walkaround of your most important facilities. Inspections by you or someone you trust.

Given many weeks of stories about how sloppy things are , from the airport to quarantine/isolation facilities , no one in charge went out and had a look & talked to people
So yes, we can blame those in charge . They never checked or followed up. You dont spit out orders and never check that orders(rules) are being followed/implemented .
It was common knowledge for some time that things were micky mouse . So those in charge need to 100% take the blame

And the news media need to stop giving airtime to that Aus woman complaining that she now cant get an early release . Having exceptions is part of the problem .

We need to consider, what next.
Covid wont be eliminated . Some countries are obviously accepting they cant eliminate it & going out of lockdown & managing it the best they can
So , given it wont be eliminated , does NZ quarantine itself off forever ?

Yeah but whose in charge? MoH are in charge of all the pandemic response, yet PM put Police in charge of the repatriation, border and quarantine. Did MoH decide that or PM? It "appears " that MoH own everything but dont control the border. Military is taking that over it seems but they are already there as is AC Digby for a month or more, so nothing had changed.

NZ cannot quarantine itself off forever. Possibly till just after the election though.

The government response to it has been to eliminate, and they seem to have thrown all the eggs into that basket. There are no more eggs. The country cannot afford another lockdown, it will be bad enough economically as it is.

I fully support what has happened so far, but cannot support further lockdowns (and I suspect the majority of the population will not support it either). I also think the government knows this, and knows their political future is resting on it. They have overseen a big cockup at the supposedly 'secure' border, and understandably, people are annoyed at them, and will be losing faith in their leadership (I know I now feel that they have dropped the ball there, and am questioning where else it has been dropped).

The fact that these two women got out without testing, and they don't know how many others have been the same worries me. Statistically, of the 250 or so people coming in per day, surely more than 3 of them are carrying the virus given they are all coming from countries where it is more widespread.

I do not hold much hope for a vaccine. I do hold more hope for a treatment, and I feel that with a viable treatment, the virus will just be allowed to run it's course.

You're suggesting we don't test many incoming travellers?

On Radio NZ yesterday one of the people who went through the 14 day isolation said EXACTLY THAT.   None of her 4 person family were tested at any stage.  Blomfield was unable to say that people in isolation were being tested.

Crisis averted, we will almost be where we should have been. 3 new cases, all locked away safely. Probably a few collateral cases on the way after this ball drop. Military run the centres, Police are out. Whoever released the two women relieved of that role goes back to previous role.

You are missing the part about them NOT TESTING THOSE IN ISOLATION.  So how do you know its only 3 cases?  Lets put it another way, why is it that Australia has been getting dozens of cases detected a day from their incoming arrivals who are in isolation yet we have been getting none??  How do you explain that?

PM says Megan Woods stepping in to sort out border. Isn't this a MoH issue? Police cant manage it , AC Digby cant manage it, so Megan Woods can? Maybe a third party input will help

Threy are supposed to be tested negative at release. 19000 have gone thru the system since it was brought in as watertight, where are the CT cases?

Oh, please. The media doesn't help either:

"Kiwi woman heartbroken after compassionate exemption for dad's funeral canned mid-flight"

Annette Loveland was en route to New Zealand from Australia on Tuesday with a pending application after her dad died of cancer when the Government made the announcement.

She's delivered an emotional message to the Government over its call: "Actually show some compassion, these are people's lives and people's deaths that we need to deal with - it's pretty difficult to deal with it from a hotel room, alone."

She says the decision shouldn't have applied to people who were in the air, or those whose applications were in process.

"If I'd been told that before I'd got on the flight, I wouldn't have got on the flight. If the Ministry of Health had said to me we cannot give you this exemption, if you arrive in New Zealand you will go into managed quarantine for two weeks, I would have not got on that flight, and then I could be with my family right now."

My mate was alone when his mother who he nursed at home by himself for 12 years died in hospital and he could neither visit her, have a funeral, or grieve with his relatives.  He had to suck it up and did so for the safety of others.  I wish this woman would show the same compassion as he did.

This is what i meant about the media , they are fanning the flames to sell copy. Yesterday they wanted everyone sacked who gave an exemption to the 2 woman and today they want the government to show compassion because the poor woman couldnt go the the funeral. And to the people who are moaning to the media about isolation and how they arent kept apart, then stay in your room if you are that worried .you knew what the conditons were when you came back to NZ, Stop moaning people dont care.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I believe this conversation is heading towards the pitchfork crew.

The Media have an IMMENSE pressure right now to ensure they're pumping out as many rage inducing, policy changing, heart string pulling news articles as possible.

As proven time after time, they've got very few/no morals, no social responsibility and their overlords breathing down their neck to spread discord and attract as many eyeballs as possible.

They're on the verge of bankruptcy, losing money hand over fist and they will be seeing this as a life-line. This is a literal make-or-break event for them.

Do not trust for one measly second they're doing ANY of this out of the goodness of their hearts, they're producing articles for money.

So yes, they have a stupid amount of responsibility, and trust placed in them by the public and they're massaging the crap out of this in order to make it rain $$$.

Just please, please be wary of what you read in the media, they have an agenda right now and it is NOT in our best interests as a country.

Woods will address the media in her new role alongside Air Commodore Darryn 'Digby' Webb at 2pm on Friday.

Maybe we can see who has dropped the ball, why, and where from here
