The Washington Post - People probably caught coronavirus from minks ...

today

The minks on Dutch fur farms first got sick in mid-April, showing symptoms ranging from runny noses to severe respiratory distress.

They had caught the novel coronavirus from human handlers, the government later said, and soon farmed minks appeared to have passed it back to two other people, in the world’s first reports of animal-to-human transmission since the pandemic began.

The Netherlands has since culled more than 500,000 minks from 13 infected fur companies.

The goal of the grim task, set to continue until the farms are virus-free, is to snuff out the possibility of the animals becoming a reservoir for the virus that causes covid-19, which could stymie efforts to end a pandemic that has killed nearly half a million people worldwide.

Some researchers say that although the chances of that happening appear minimal, the implications are too grave to dismiss. ...

if its impacting on your human rights, and you dont want a test, sorry you cant leave till you have one. if you haven't had one on day 14 when you are suppose to leave you will remain till you have a test, from day 14 you will then be charged for the accommodation until you wish to be tested and leave. this test may or may not have a 5 day waiting period attached.

its not all about you.

Even so NZ Military Police  would bring discipline into managed isolation and quarantine 😎

i don't know what that word means. is it something to do with doing what your teacher at school tells you and obey school rules to do instead of whinging to mum and dad who calls up the principal to threaten the teacher and go to court to challenge the school uniform and hair policy?

NOUN
1. discipline in the camp was strict: control, regulation, direction, order, authority, rule, strictness, a firm hand; routine, regimen; training, teaching, instruction,

2. it may take courage and discipline to do this, but it is worth the effort: self-control, self-discipline, self-government, control, controlled behaviour, self-restraint; good behaviour, orderliness, obedience.

All of the above.

The aim of all is but to nurse the life
With honour, wealth, and ease, in waning age;
And in this aim there is such thwarting strife,
That one for all, or all for one we gage;
As life for honour in fell battle's rage;
Honour for wealth; and oft that wealth doth cost
The death of all, and all together lost.

William Shakespeare from his poem The Rape of Lucrece

In other words ALL stop being selfish and think of others.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Dr Bloomfield stated at yesterdays media conference at a person cannot be compelled to have a test, however the current health order means you cannot leave without negative test, if the person chooses not to have the test the current health order allows you to be keep in quarantine for 28 days

Thats correct. The confusion was that it was stated recently that it's voluntary. It is voluntary, but its also a requirement! It can be both. He stated that the test process is invasive, so its technically a medical procedure, and as we know, that needs consent, just as you sign if you are having an operation.

Why some people look at a few seconds of medical care vs a once in 100 year pandemic event is beyond me. I have an acqaintance like that. Everything is a conspiracy everything needs to be protested against.

I also suspect that the rules and consequences of not abiding by the rules until recently were not made clear to those in quarantine either i.e.

  • if you decline a test you must stay 28 days
  • if you break the rules you could get 6 months in prison or fine (I can't recall the amount)

What is really important is the rules (& consequences) and expectations of being in quarantine are made clear to all and are strictly enforced, until Tues this presumably was not occurring. I have little doubt it now is

Ferret, the relative to the mink , is being used in Covid19 vaccine testing as they can be infected and carry the virus as well.
So probably the whole mustelids family ?  Yes Weasel I'm looking at you.
https://asiatimes.com/2020/04/covid-19-vaccine-ferret-trials-begin-in-australia/
""The ferrets, used in the tests because they have a similar virus reaction to humans, were fine afterward apart from fevers, he said.""

Finding suitable host for testing is important to development of treatments.
Apparently it would be nice to develop and infectable mouse .....
https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/05/coronavirus-labs-scramble-to-find-right-animals-for-covid-19-studies/
""
Virologists hoped the new virus would multiply in mice. They’re cheap and plentiful and easy to work with, meaning that important experiments could get started quicker. No such luck, it seems. When a group in Wuhan led by virologist Shi Zheng-Li adorned cells with receptors from a variety of mammals, the team found the virus could latch onto those of horseshoe bats, civets, and pigs — but not mice.
""

There is not a lot of data on animal to human infection as there’s no ethically acceptable way to construct a trial.
Plus the virus will likely change and evolve a bit as it multiplies in the other animal which may make it less human suitable , and the viral load developed may not be high as they don't get very sick etc. Testing all this would be difficult and ethically impossible.

Then there is the taboo subject of cats .
https://www.statnews.com/2020/05/13/cats-can-catch-covid-19-from-one-another-study-finds-the-question-is-can-we/
The infamous Civet Cat that can carry SARs like viruses very well, is not apparently a cat as such though, just has a cat broadly like look that coined the name.

There's a crisis of magical thinking overruling fundamental reality going on across all sectors of society in response to this crisis. Set aside the obvious stupidity and mendacity one would expect from that fat guy and other people of a similar ilk, here's a quick illustration of some of the magical thinking:

  • If you don't test properly/shut your ears, you have no cases.
  • Somehow tourism/long haul travel will be back soon enough. Significant number of countries require those who enter to isolate for 14 days. There's a very real prospect that people will face needing 5 weeks of leave away from work for one week's worth of overseas holiday. Even if a lot of countries just go "**** it!" and open up the borders, a lot of people in jobs where workplaces cannot afford to have you come back infecting the vulnerable or your colleagues (e.g. hospitals) will mandate that these people stay away from work after their return. Lots of people simply can't travel even if they want to, are able to, and don't care much about the risk.
  • Voluntary compliance works - see NZ.
  • We'll have a vaccine soon enough. Do we have a vaccine for colds? Do people know the effectiveness rate of flu jabs (hint: it's not high at all)? If the US develops the vaccine first, would you trust it enough to want it? Note: I am not an anti-vaxxer.
  • Endless consumption of low value stuff like coffee, crap low-to-mid-tier food, and passing commodities back and forth will somehow be able to sustain our economies.
  • If we pretend we don't have a climate crisis, we can stop talking about it during this period.
  • The economy/everything was going gangbusters and wonderfully before This Thing and once it's gone, all will be well. Apart from the fact that no one knows when this will be gone, the likes of the BLM protests and other things are highlighting the structural issues across many societies, which will only be made worse by this crisis.
  • Only light skinned and rich people matter. COVID is out of control in places like Brazil, Russia and India. These are huge countries with massive populations and the world is rather dependent on them.
  • Things will only get better from here on. Even the WHO is saying the disease is accelerating.

The lack of discussion and leadership around some of these issues is just scary.

Two new cases. Bloomfield trying to tell everyone that it's because the pandemic is getting worse overseas and more people are returning. It just couldn't have anything to do with the fact that there was incredibly inconsistent testing (or even non-existent testing) amongst the arrivals in isolation until very recently, could it? /Tui ad. The PR efforts are nauseating.

Two new cases were from India, returning on a June 5 repatriation flight

And here's the kicker:

The family has been transferred from the Grand Millennium Auckland to the Jet Park Hotel in Auckland.

They will have tested everyone on the same flight as the couple by the end of Saturday, Bloomfield said.

More than two weeks (not two days, two hours or whatever) after the flight, we will have everyone on the flight tested! What a splendid effort. Someone give Bloomfield a medal. This guy needs to be fired.

It's against the background of their own repeated failure to test against their own inadequate regime. For example, arrivals in Hong Kong are tested when they arrive. But hey you just keep acting like we have a perfect regime going on!

I so wish the expletive filter was turned off on this thread. This is just absolutely ridiculous. The continued incompetence surely is bordering on breach of law. If these idiots cannot do the job then give it to someone who can. Another outbreak will devastate our economy and public health. It is time Prime Minister acts decisively and with advice from people that have a clue, sack the idiots, can the spin, and do her job.

I have a hint for her CLOSE the **** **** **** borders for real you muppet.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
