Batman:

people escaping isolation in Hammy https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/five-escape-isolation-hamilton

Apparently (as per later news) these people applied for "compassionated" leave to attend a funeral. Were told no so they just decided to do it.

Not a mental health issue. Plain, simple stupidity. Throw the book at them all, charge with everything.

ummmm, go back and read the screeds of posts here saying they aren't much chop. Many of them technical. I agree with you although the virus will get into the air and settle on things, end up on hands, scratch itchy nose etc, but end of the day its helps

Where I am, Masks, or officially "face coverings over the mouth, nose and chin" are required for all indoor public spaces in the city, like malls and grocery stores, on Public Transit, in taxis and Ubers.

The city passed a bylaw after a study showed less than 40 per cent of residents "always wore a face covering in public or confined spaces", well below the World Health Organization's target that 80 per cent of a population be masking regularly to contain community spread.

There are exemptions - it's not compulsary in public areas of multi-family residential buildings, for children under age 2, people who are eating or drinking, etc -  but generally, to be a good citizen, you wear a mask where you'll come close to strangers. And now it's a requirement (with $100-200 fines) the percentage masking has increased.

I'm all in favour.

They've been proven to reduce the spread of coronavirus (a simple explanation here) and, in general the public uptake has been pretty good.
So much so, that you can expect sideways looks, muttering, and maybe a "hey buddy - gotta mask?" if you're in a closely peopled public space without one.

Many places - such as Medical centres/clinics refuse entry without a mask, some shops keep a complimentary supply by the door.

I parked in a 5 minute zone and darted into a Home Depot to buy some screws the other day, completely forgetting to mask up.
It was only after I walked in - and realised everyone - the checkout staff, other customers in the aisles - was wearing a mask that I remembered...and didn't have one in my pocket.
As I headed for the exit aisle to go back to the car the girl at the service counter just pointed to the free masks. Guess I'm not the first.

It really doesn't take much effort. And might save someone's life. If C-19 gets loose in NZ, it'll be time for everyone to wear one.

Washington Post: Trump is right that with lower testing, we record fewer cases. That’s already happening.

Both the CDC and an outside analysis say we’re missing most coronavirus infections

The United States recorded its 4 millionth confirmed coronavirus case Thursday, a spread that would have been hard to fathom five months ago. Fully a quarter of those cases were recorded in the past 16 days.

To hear President Trump tell it, this is an artificial milestone. The reason we’ve recorded so many cases, he argues, is that we’ve done so many tests. It’s an effort to spin bad news — worst outbreak in the world — into good, highlighting the increase in testing over the past few months. But it’s also thoroughly disingenuous.

“Every time you test, you find a case and it gets reported in the news: We found more cases,” he complained during an interview that aired on Fox News on Wednesday night. “If instead of 50 [million], we did 25, we’d have half the number of cases.”

“So I personally think it’s overrated,” he continued, “but I am totally willing to keep doing it. You know we have so many more tests than any other country by far.”

“I’m okay with it if they want to do it,” he added later, “but again, it makes us look bad, but they say it’s good.”

It is not the case that simply cutting the number of tests would cut the number of cases, as reflected in Washington Post and COVID Tracking Project data.
...
Early in the pandemic, with limited testing available, states tested a lot of people already showing severe symptoms, driving up the rate of positive results. As testing supplies became more widely available, we could test more people, including more people who weren’t infected.

With the recent surge in new cases, which began in early June, tests were again constrained — in part because of how broadly the virus had spread. Since mid-March, the increase in tests conducted each day has grown steadily, even as the number of confirmed cases has varied.

What’s particularly odd about Trump’s attempt to tie new case totals to the number of tests we’ve completed, though, is that he’s actually right, just not in the way he means. It is the case that doing less testing will detect fewer cases — which we know because we’re conducting too few tests to catch all of the actual infections that have occurred.

In other words, the testing Trump says makes us look bad by measuring the spread of the virus actually makes the United States look better than it should, since so many cases go unrecorded.

The problem is that flouters ruin it for all the 99% of people who return to NZ that follow the rules. NZers had to spend months in lockdown to eliminate the virus, and some weren't able to see dying ones, people in hospital going to funerals to say goodbye etc, during this time.

It is just lucky we do now have processes in place to detect flouters immediately. But the cost to do this is huge each time someone escapes.

debo:

Even Trump is now saying masks are good.  NZ has got to be the last country left in the "masks may be bad/ lack of evidence they do good" category.  The Otago researcher is right.  If masks were made compulsory in category 2 and above now, then people will have the time to prepare.  Waiting until later will only cause panic buying like in Victoria.

I agree, I was referring to what I read on this thread re masks, pages and pages of good vs bad. IMO they reduce the breathing spray of the virus, have little effect on sucking it in, but any help is a good thing

What Trump says is irrelevant

I think NZ now sees them as necessary in a Covid country, based on the WHO now supporting them. I have been saying for months that we should be wearing them. But my understanding was that we didn't want people wearing masks, because it would take the PPE away from frontline medical staff, and people didn't know how to use them safely. When infact they are different supply chains, and in most cases different types of masks. Many that the public wear are just cloth, which aren't probably as effective as an N95, but gives people some security, and also if someone has the virus, they maybe less likely to cough it into the air, or over surfaces. But the problem is still with people touching a covid surface, and then readjusting their mask, which potentially could infect the person.

IMO NZers need to be taught how to use them safely, as we may need to start wearing them on things like public transport etc in the coming years, epscially if we travel overseas.

I don't normally post on this this thread but those Hamilton people made me so angry. Not only should they pay a fine for breach of isolation conditions, as National said, they should now also pay for their isolation. There is just no excuse for this. We can see in Victoria what happens when a few irresponsible people ruin it for everybody.
