And now the Herald pubishes a story with this flamebait headline "Isolation hotel absconder blasts compassionate exemption system"...

The mother of a family charged with absconding from a Hamilton isolation hotel has lashed out at the heartless compassionate exemption system - and insists she posed no health risk to anyone.

The mother took to social media overnight to criticise the process that refused her family to right to say goodbye to the children's father after they travelled from Brisbane.

She said she had undergone another Covid test since being reacptured (sic) and it was negative.

First the headline. Then "since being recaptured", which makes it sound like she was captured in the first place, like a fugitive when in fact she was in isolation.

They knew the rules coming into the country, so this family deserves nothing at this point.

Not only should they pay a fine for breach of isolation conditions, as National said, they should now also pay for their isolation. There is just no excuse for this. We can see in Victoria what happens when a few irresponsible people ruin it for everybody.

Perhaps quarantine costs as a 'good behaviour' bond is the approach we should be taking. You break it, you bought it?

I am flabbergasted at how tone-deaf someone who is freshly arriving into the country can be about having to make some/any degree of sacrifice. Many people here lost jobs, salaries, paid hours and face financial ruin, if not now then over the next six months. To come in now and act like it's entirely unreasonable that you're asked to isolate or contribute a token amount to the cost really does show how little some people appreciate what the lock-down experience was like for some people.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un convened an emergency politburo meeting after a person suspected of having Covid-19 returned from South Korea after illegally crossing the border this month, state media said on Sunday.

If confirmed, it would be the first case officially acknowledged by North Korean authorities, who have so far said the country has no confirmed cases of coronavirus.

"Reimposition of quarantine hits Spain’s vital, already struggling tourism sector"

The British government’s decision to pull Spain from the list of safe countries and require returning holidaymakers to self-isolate for a fortnight will come as a heavy blow to Spain’s lucrative and vital tourist sector.

The country, which relies on tourism for 12% of its GDP, was already expecting a bleak post-Covid summer.

But the UK decision – combined with the French government’s advice against travelling to Catalonia, and Norway’s reimposition of a 10-day quarantine requirement for people arriving from Spain – is likely to torpedo Spain’s faltering tourist recovery.

Belgium has also banned non-essential travel to the north-eastern areas of Huesca and Lleida, and recommended against travel to a number of other Spanish areas.

this is how it reads to me

- NK had a few (?tens/hundreds) cases in the last few months but we managed to "fix" the patients - they are no longer infectious

- but we've had a second wave and we are unable to find all the cases to "fix". so we declare that some nasty defector brought it in so we can send out the army to hunt for anybody who we think has the virus so we can "fix" them

Vic really isn't helping itself. Roll on 2 weeks to see if these guys keep the trend going, or if it's also partly from the public - where the enforced public wear order is to start taking effect. Meat works and cool stores in the limelight again (when their standard PPE is often covered except lunch rooms)

Andrews said there were specific sectors "driving" the state's second Covid-19 wave.

He said recent data indicated some people were continuing to go to work despite feeling sick and showing symptoms.

"Aged care, healthcare, big distribution centres, meatworks, cool stores, big warehouses, these workplaces are driving most of this second wave," Andrews said.

"What that tells you is that some people, for whatever reason – not a matter of judgement, just a fact – some people are feeling sick, they have symptoms and they are still going to work."

Do they not have the same work ethic as here. Someone sneezes or coughs. All eyes on, and calls for 'oi, keep that at home' etc

I'm not. New Zealanders returning or currently overseas have been treated like criminals for having the temerity to enter their own country. They have been made a political target as they are an easy group to target. Many of them are returning having already lost jobs, salaries, paid hours and faced financial ruin. Many of the New Zealanders returning are not wealthy in any way.

There have been over 30,000 people go through isolation and how many have misbehaved or complained. Not many at all but for the way it is portrayed it appears that there are riots going on. It's all very disappointing but really unsurprising.

Everyone in the world has made huge sacrifices due to COVID, it's hardly unique to NZ. If you abscond or play up in isolation then you deserve prosecution, that is very clear. It's also clear that the vast majority of people are behaving themselves and generally behaving as they should. That doesn't get recognised as it doesn't enable anyone to be blamed.

this is how it reads to me

litigation in Australia is nearly as bad as America and has been for a while now. If I had dinner at a friend's place and slipped and fell I will sue him. Places do not offer takeaway boxes because if you get food poisoning you'd sue the eatery. etc etc. My relative is a barrister in Melbourne and he enlightened me on how not to get sued when I was in AU. That was nearly a decade ago ...
