Texas Tribune: Conservative think tank leader says schools should reopen since most Texans dying from COVID-19 are elderly or Hispanic

Vance Ginn... is facing fierce backlash for a recent racist tweet that said schools should open since most of the people dying from the coronavirus in Texas are elderly or Hispanic.

...Ginn tweeted that the people most likely to perish from the deadly virus are people older than 50 and Hispanics, whose death rate increased from 24.8% on May 27 to 48% on July 27. Hispanics make up about 40% of the state’s population.

Meanwhile, about 180 deaths, or 3% of the total, occurred among Texans younger than 40. About 2,000 people who died were 80 or older, making up the largest age bracket of COVID-19 deaths.

“Why not #openschools, end universal mandates, target vulnerable & check those from #Mexico?” Ginn wrote in a since-deleted tweet. He juxtaposed his tweet with a GIF of Prince Harry of Wales miming a mic drop.

He later apologized for tweeting the GIF. ““It’s been brought to my attention that the gif may have been perceived as insensitive. I apologize as that was not my intention,” he tweeted.

...Ginn later removed the tweet and apologized. “I believe strongly based on my deep faith that every life is precious,” he wrote. “My intent was to highlight the positive development of more data available to make better policy decisions and help the vulnerable.”

Almost 53% of public school students were Hispanic in 2018-19 and more than 60% are economically disadvantaged, according to Texas Education Agency data. Public health experts have said schools that reopen in areas with high and fast-rising rates of community spread are likely to exacerbate the effects of the virus. That means staff and students could bring the virus home to their families.

“This is my grandfather Albert. He was an Hispanic citizen of the U.S. & passed from #Covid,” tweeted former state Represenative Jason Villalba, Repulican Dallas. “His grandchildren (born in Dallas) lived with him and also got #Covid. They survived. W/ great respect, the death of elderly Hispanics does not necessarily make the schools safe to open.”

Ginn, who previously served in the White House under President Donald Trump's administration as associate director for economic policy at the Office of Management and Budget, also served as senior economist for the think tank.

Hopefully these guys are more responsible than the US Military has been in Japan where it seesm to be source of major outbreak.

PS, On another note,
They have not been regularly testing isolation hotel bus drivers here either, and a lot of these are not exactly young.
Recent announcement after being outed is they will test every 2 weeks.
Hmm wonder what's happening at our ports ?

IIRC the tests are "voluntary".

Bit like a workplace drug test if it's not part of your employment contact - you can't be forced, nor penalised if you refuse.

Understand, but I gather this was outed to a reporter by drivers themselves who did think they should be regularly tested.
I gather the issue was they would have to take time off work and arrange themselves, given shifts etc, not so easy .

Give them a lesson in hockering up a goober into a sample jar.  Beats having the possibility of a "nurse ratchet" working on you - which I'd guess is a reason why some people are reluctant to get tested. I'm sure most are good, but a Dr friend of mine was telling me that he's goofed-up doing nasopharangeal swabs, wonders why patient is reacting badly - pulls out bloodied swab.

Similar to the news today about self-sample cervical smear tests which probably should be rolled out ASAP. Even as a man I can imagine most women have some reluctance to have a regular smear test - especially if there's a more dignified alternative.

Our Dunedin friend is at it again with statements (that we all have a level head about) and media taking it to runn with top notch headlines again

Very high' chance New Zealand will go back to level two

I know,

..and given that there is now a system to allow regional lockdowns, I think the chance of "New Zealand" going back to Level 2 is actually quite slim... certain areas possibly, but if we ended up taking the whole country going up to that alert level, I think its highly likely it would be on the way to some thing bigger

That we get might CT is not new, its been stated for ever. Now we have a genuine statement about that (again), now its headline news, we cant handle 1000 cases per day, my god. If we do, and when we do, it will be regional, it's manageable.

Its hard to improve the border. Its not a prison, leaks will occur

You better hope there is no change in Govt because then it will be opened bigly.

Students I agree with. Its a material part of our economy, so Im in favour of managing that. Educational institutions have skin in the game, if they want it long term I feel they can manage it

IMO we have to keep improving the border, and make it more and more watertight. The entire economy and NZers future is almost entirely based on what happens at the border to keep the virus out. The cost of a leak, like has occurred in Victoria, is going to cost a huge amount of money, and huge knock on effects, including a lot of unnecessary death. Let alone how it inconveniences and restricts the lives of everyone, when a lockdown occurs.

There's one large flaw in our plan we can't control. And it's we rely a bit more on beyond the border. The rest of the world isn't working hard for the same goal. This thing's going to be around for years. And a such the threat to us is going to stress us all for years to come. :/ Viability will soon come into question.

If hypothetically speaking there there is no effective vaccine in by the end of next year and the world has moved on and just deals with small outbreaks as they happen (factoring in that if there is no vaccine by then that herd immunity would have likely occured across many parts of the world) how long will NZ be able to keep it's borders closed for?

if that's the case there will be new things other places would have learnt about the disease to allow borders to reopen. whether people up there are smart enough to implement we will have to find out.

Madness. I wonder why they have the loophole allowing people to move during lockdown. We prevented that occurring during our lockdown, although I know of someone who did still move during the lockdown.

It is still madness IMO that they can move during a lockdown, when the entire reason for the lockdown is to keep people where they are, and isolated from one another, to try and starve the virus the virus of new hosts. If they are having to quarantine in their new location, hey still then risk bringing the virus into the new state. Whereas if they waited until after the lockdown, and which will hopefully eliminate community transmission, then there is far less risk of the virus getting into the new state, even if quarantined.
