That possibly needed to happen .
But will have real consequences . There will be some who resist getting tested for that reason, or may just go into hiding .
Not everyone acts rationally , as we're seeing .

I think it will all depend on whether or not they can figure out how the South Auckland Americold employee got it. Id say he got it while passing through Auckland airport doing his job but then that raises the question how did he get it in the airport? was it on a surface somewhere and he got it while cleaning? or did it get through our borders via community transmission if its the latter id see we have no choice but to go to level 4 and just stamp it out.

Understand what you are getting at, but hopefully they can communicate some big advantages.

Not the least being somewhere where medical staff are at hand if you suddenly go south.

Monitoring without having to go back and forth to your doctor.

Great free food , etc.

Hopefully people can see with such a potentially unpredictable condition being monitored is a good idea.

Or the port which could be why they are testing there today. We may never know, I am pleased we are responding so well to the outbreak and have the ability to do it at such a detailed level as our health service is not overloaded.

Covid-19: Americold confirms three new co-workers return positive results

Three new Covid-19 cases linked to the Americold worker who tested positive earlier this week have been confirmed by the company.

A man in his 50s was the initial Covid-19 case at Americold's Mt Wellington facility. Another close contact of the latest active cases has also been confirmed to have the virus - a student from Mount Albert Grammar.

Americold managing director Richard Winnall told Midday Report they were advised of the results involving the co-workers at their Mt Wellington facility this morning.

"They were close contacts and probable relationships with the original confirmed Covid case. So now that brings our total to four at that site.

...About half of the Mt Wellington facility's team have yet to receive their results, he said.

..the team [of 27 employees] were now all in isolation.

The Ministry of Health is testing surfaces at the site after speculation about whether the virus had survived at lower temperatures in storage on imported goods.

"We think that is still improbable as does the Ministry of Health but they want to rule that out," Winnall said. "So there'll be work over the next two days to complete testing at the site, do analysis and look at imported products and just rule that."

One of the countries top infectious disease specialists also says it's unlikely to have originated from imported goods.

In short, There is not yet good information as to how long, but there is evidence that it could be a very long time.

But according to Dr Mohamad Mooty at Infectious Diseases at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi: "They have been shown to survive for up to two years at -20C."

Americold says no products have transitted from Melbourne to AKL. Blew my theory away. Ive read in more than one place that it can be viable when frozen, to put the public off using freezng as a sanitiser for food, it doenst work, you are storing the virus.

It doesn't have to come from Melbourne, the virus is global, so it can come from anywhere else.

The big question still remains how did the 1st case at Americold (the man in his 50's) get it? The fact that 48 hours down the track we still have no idea goes to show the tracing system is poor.

If it 100% came person to person who at Americold or in the general public gave it to the man above, where are they now and how many others have they infected in the last 14+ days???

More importantly - where did they get it?

The frozen food thing does seem unlikely, and officials are saying they don't think it's this and they just want to rule it out. I'm generally a fan of the simplest explanation being the right one, but this is an intriguing and very curious possibility.

You say that he may have infected many others in the last 14 days, but in 48 hours we should have located all of those people and had them tested? Its not the time to locate and test its the forensics to find many of these people. i wish everything was as easy as often is made out here

To me the simplest explanation at first glance from the frozen food (not necessarily the most likely or the most scientific). We already know the virus is very viable the lower the temperature.

BUT if that's the case then there should be a lot more cases as the frozen goods are passed along the chain of freight. So maybe if you look at the chain then maybe it's not that simple unless you find all the other cases of people who handled the frozen stuff. From ports to trucks to supermarkets to consumers. So in that sense it is less likely to be the frozen food.

Indeed yes, which is part of what makes it so curious/intriguing to me. I suppose if it's frozen food then it's possible there are other cases we haven't found, but I feel like they would have presented symptoms and so on and therefore gotten a test (but perhaps not, given complacency etc discussed upthread).

If it does turn out to be frozen food - where to next? How do we effectively manage that (and how much of a concern is it?). It being a border leak would probably be the easier outcome to deal with.

I don't particulary want to speculate but I find it a very interesting question. I just really hope that we get an answer to it soon.
