"Given the structural similarities of the COVID-19 virus to the coronavirus strains tested previously (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, Human Coronavirus), and based on the evidence available to us, we would expect our Dettol products (listed above) to be effective against the new strain."

A corporate goblin grasped a "seize the day" banner and held it aloft at the weekly sales conference.

(I'm sceptical that quats are effective - some studies suggest not particularly - but the stuff should be very cheap.  When I was involved in making the active ingredient, we were selling 50% solution at about $3-4 / kg, so a bottle of typical retail product - 2% plus water plus colour and fragrance - only costs a few cents to make)

The Washington Post - Amid toilet paper shortages, Australian newspaper offers a practical solution: blank pages

today

With Australian supermarkets running out of toilet paper due to coronavirus-related hoarding, a newspaper in Australia has offered its own practical solution: blank pages.

The NT News, a tabloid newspaper that serves Darwin and the rest of the Northern Territory, printed eight blank sheets in its Thursday edition.

Run out of loo paper? The NT News cares. That’s why we’ve printed an eight-page special liftout inside, complete with handy cut lines, for you to use in an emergency. Get your limited edition one-ply toilet newspaper sheets” ...

Now that's what I call lateral thinking.  🙂

Hah - that's priceless. If someone printed an honest book titled "What we really know for sure about Covid 19", I hope they use soft paper.

nCov 19 is an enveloped virus isn't it? In that case anything with BZK in it would work, and you can buy that in anything up to 5L containers. So go to Bunnings, Mitre10, whatever, look for anything with benzalkonium chloride (BZK) in it, and get use that, diluted down, as sanitiser if you can't get the standard alcohol/triclosan based stuff. That is, assuming nCov 19 as actually affected by it

I'm not familiar with the substance, but poison centers private searchable database list it as a "Cleaning agents: cationics".

"A surfactant such as the quaternary ammonium compounds with a positively charged ionic group. They are used as disinfectants and antistatic agents, but seldom as cleansers per se."

Which is an antimicrobial agent, and often used in disinfectants. Typically it's at 1% to 17% strength.

Seems to be popular, in first aid kits, and even with baby wipes.

I wouldn't mix it with alcohol.

Just distilled water at 1:12. So 1 liter BZK per 12 liters of waters,
and 1.3 cups of table salt per liter of water (1.3 x 12 = 15.6 cups in this case)(the salt's saturation point).

As usual with any sanitizer, keep it away from mucous membranes:

Don't drink it, and away from your face, and genitals.

As an alternate, there's mentholated alcohol/spirits (which is cheap)

If you want to make someone cry, food grade alcohol at 130 proof or better also works:

  • Bacardi 151 — 151 Proof.
  • Balkan Vodka — 176 Proof.
  • Bruichladdich X4 Quadrupled Whisky — 184 Proof.
  • Everclear — 190 Proof.
  • Spirytus — 192 Proof.

Hi, thanks for looking into this. The point I'm making is that a lot of people aren't game to conjure up a home brew hand sanitiser, even if something like isopropyl alcohol or BZK etc etc can safely be used as one of the ingredients. Surely a commercial enterprise should be able to manufacture and market quite quickly an alcohol-based hand sanitiser especially for the NZ market. The same goes for face masks which several countries regard as an essential part of the fight against the corona virus.

It's quite demoralising for elderly people in particular (who are apparently most at risk) not to be able to buy these items, particularly when officials say NZ is very well prepared in the fight against this virus. Can you imagine 80-year old retirement village residents mixing up home brew hand sanitiser in their tiny rooms and with poor eye sight?!!

Don't use "BZK" in hand sanitiser.  It's a skin irritant at any concentration where it might be effective, and not very effective at lower concentration.

Whack 17% strength on your hands, and your skin will turn red and peel.

I can see why you'd want extra TP, given the rate at which people are s***ting themselves over this.

I wouldn't use it either for that, I was merely suggesting it as a possible alternative now that everything else has vanished due to panic buying. Also, it's a good surfactant so even at low concentrations it'll still work as that even if it's not so effective as a biocide. Main thing was its ready availability though, if you have (some types of) Spray & Walk Away in the house you've already got it.

Problem with the panic buying is that the people who really do need it now no longer have easy access. Heard from a friend in the supply chain that they've made it trade-only to make sure it gets to those who have a real need for it.

Interesting article about proactive response in Taiwan.  NZ not even close to this level of action.

Some things may seem a bit draconian but cases there have not risen as fast as might be expected given the level of contact between Taiwan & China.

Honestly I don't intend to. BZK was brought up so I did some searching through a medical databases that are not publicly available, used by poison centers.

Manufacturers don't like to publish the contents of their products. Some even won't tell government run poison centers, instead supply their own in-house poison experts, via their own helpdesk.

From what I gather, BZK is used in many antiseptic products. You're probably correct about the dosage. At least one manufacturer using a concentration of 0.3% for baby wipes, specifically because it's supposed to be less irritating than alcohol based sanitizers. 17% is used by one first aid manufacturer, but I can't say how they instructed its use.

This is an animal based study, which may or may not be relevant to humans.

To be honest, given the stats on this virus, I'm really not too worried about schools, Children appear to have a low susceptibility and a even lower rate of severe symptoms,

My big concerns is it getting in to resthomes, where its going to have a serious impact..

The question is whether children are less likely to acquire the disease, or less likely to have acute symptoms. If they're equally likely to acquire the disease, then you should be worried about schools, which would become a mechanism for transmitting the disease from one family to another. And asymptomatic children would transmit the disease to grandparents, including those in resthomes.

I suspect this is why Italy and Iran have closed schools and universities.

Exactly the problem I'll be facing soon.  Am due to get another pack of toilet paper with this fortnights grocery run.  Not because I need to stockpile, but because what I have left is not going to last until the following fortnight.
