Not entirely correct. It doesn't match any *recorded* genome sequences from positive cases from MIQ facilities. As of a few weeks ago this data only existed for (my recollection from a media story) about 60% of total recorded cases in NZ since February.

Not entirely correct. It doesn't match any *recorded* genome sequences from positive cases from MIQ facilities. As of a few weeks ago this data only existed for (my recollection from a media story) about 60% of total recorded cases in NZ since February.

Furthermore there were a number of people in the early days who weren't tested at all, and of the ones that were tested since regular testing became a requirement, not all of them can be sequenced. So we may never know definitively enough to say where it did come from, but that doesn't mean we can start saying where it definitively didn't come from either.

Can you blame people with all the confused messaging?

We had the MoH testing strategy a little over a week ago which said they wanted asymptomatic people from South and West Auckland that were from high risk groups to be tested. While there was a communications failure with this messaging (that lead to the Twitter and Instagram posts saying everybody should be tested) the PM then came out on Sunday correcting this and said that asymptomatic testing was not occurring.

With ILI symptoms now almost non existent in the community any large scale Covid testing is going to have to involve large numbers of asymptomatic people in the community, so for the PM then tell everybody this isn't the case is just crazy.

Apparently according to daily mail, apartment block plumbing can spread covid. I have a feeling this has been discussed already. That was the theory for cruise ship spread where everybody allegedly stayed in their rooms but still got covid.

Ah, missed that. So it would have been Covid19 in isolation... not terribly scandalous then?

Only 7K tests yesterday, but the close contacts not yet contacted is a fraction of what it was.

4 cases today have been linked to that silly church. For heaven's sake, stop all religious gatherings and all other pointless large gatherings until there's a vaccine.

Only 7K tests yesterday, but the close contacts not yet contacted is a fraction of what it was.

This is now the second time over the last few months that Christchurch possible cases have been reported as top cases, and shown to not be cases. The first was cases in a Chch resthome. Reminds me of the boy that cried wolf. I wish they would be certain before make it a top leading news story, as it causes unnecessary stress and fear. At last it wasn't a new community case.

I guess it's pointless to point out that Maori and Pasifika usually have worse outcomes when contracting the virus.

Maybe we should take a hint from the man who walked around Florida beaches dressed as the Grump Reaper, to get the message out.

I don't think some people also realise that the only way that NZ can remain covid free, and use this elimination /stamp it out policy, without going into lockdowns, is to do a lot of testing. IT relies on it. Also test all who have cold or flu symptoms. The cost of this testing is tiny compared to the costs of lockdowns, and the cost of being one of the Covid countries, and having to live in a level 2-2.5 Covid country like the UK, where they are socially distanced, and many businesses can't operate properly, and older people are now essentially isolating themselves from society. Most of the people in the UK now getting it. WE should really be pushing the testing, with lots of advertising. eg. Maybe a free fabric mask each time someone gets a test etc. They were at one stage giving free boxes of masks.

They have also introduced new border measures to strengthen the border against the virus. But I would have thought these should have been in place originally, and there is still a lot they could do it strengthen it. They only need to look at what Australia are doing.

I'm surprised, tonight on TV news.
Only 12% ( 720 out of 6,000) Tauranga port workers tested , and they will only 'just' complete the Auckland Port Worker Testing by tonight.
This was the urgent testing that was supposed to be more than a week ago ?
Sigh....

Then we are looking at quiet and empty test centers, so its not for want of tests or testing personnel that could be moved to where they are needed.

Agree 100% if MoH expected people to visit those test stations there needs to be a lot more clarity better late than never imo.

Totally agree. Same with the waivers of gathering size for funerals etc. We either do this properly or go Swedish and take the pain.

One thing we should have learned over the last month is that until this goes away or a vaccine is successful, large huggy gatherings and groups of people singing are just dumb

I will probably get abused to hell for saying this but will say it anyway: funerals largely exist (from my observations) to make the people alive feel better or to help them look "proper". As for weddings, if you really love someone, who gives a crap whether a giant crowd gets to see you put on a show during a worldwide pandemic? FWIW, I (and my wife) mutually agreed to put our money where our mouths are a few years back. We invited a very select group of family and friends (9 people in total) to fly to a place special to us and most of them and they just witnessed a ceremony and then we had a nice dinner. Some joined us and we holidayed around a bit together. That was that. The ones invited largely could easily afford this and were happy to come; the ones whose budget were tighter we paid everything for. We then donated a significant sum saved from not doing a normal wedding to charity and still had money left over for a great honeymoon.

The problem in NZ at the moment is that people's notion of "freedom" vis-a-vis the COVID-related restrictions is all about "What we've lost!" but not what these sacrifices have gotten us. We are still physically, psychologically, and emotionally way safer than if we allow COVID to go wild. I am not advocating that we live like this forever but at least wait till a vaccine is here or change our approach after, say, a year if a vaccine still isn't ready.
