So I had a vasectomy at The Snip Vasectomy Clinic in Remuera after work on Friday.  Got home at 4.30 and at 4.45 decided to check the damage.  Had a look and my underpants were full of blood and the swab as wring-able.  Thought this doesn't look right.  Called the nurse and they said go to an A and E.  Went to an A and E, waited 3/4 of an hour and the doctor said, I assume your scrotum hasn't always looked like that?  I looked down and saw my left nut was about the size of an apple.  He told me I had to get to the Emergency department in town.

Drove in and waited another 30-45 minutes to be seen and by this time it was the size of a grapefruit.  Doctor said you have to apply pressure to it for as long as you can and put me on morphine so I could handle the pain of squeezing my grapefruit size scrotum (but this stage it is also black with bruising).  He came back about an hour later and it had reduced in size a little and he said it probably isn't arterial but there is too much blood in there to do an ultra sound, stay over night and we will do it tomorrow.

Next morning got looked at and told i would be getting an ultrasound sometime.  Sat round waiting and waiting and finally at 1pm had an ultrasound.  Went back to my room and waited and waited, by five I was a bit annoyed and finally found out i was booked for surgery to remove a 200ml hematoma from between my testicles.

Next day was told the surgery could be any time so was expecting to be waiting all day but at 10am got called in and by 10.45 was awake again, getting put to sleep was weird.  I remember being told we will just put this drug in and then I remember waking up facing the wrong direction.  I got taken back to my room, had a look and have this 3 cm wide drain sticking out of my scrotum (has to stay in there for 3 days).  I didn't see a doctor for the rest of the day, but the nurse gave me some Tramadol and sleeping pills so I could at least get some sleep (previous two nights between snoring, yelling, beeping, lights and blood pressure checks I didn't get much).

Got released this morning and finally got home with a drip out of my black swollen scrotum.

Not allowed to exercise for at least 3 weeks possible 8 weeks.  Off work for at least a week.

The nurses in at Auckland hospital were great just really disappointed in the complete lack of communication from the doctors.

So how was everyone else's weekend?

For the rest of you: as awful as having your front fall off is, I’d just like to point out that that’s not very typical. I had it done under local, drove myself home afterward, and puked once later that night. For the next week or so I needed to pee about every half an hour... and that was it.

If you’ve ever played any outdoor sport, then generally speaking you’ve probably had worse already.

OTOH I now know the most superfluous question in the world: it would be the one where the doctor is stabbing you in the nuts with a needle and asking “Can you feel that?”

So what was the response from the clinic that did the original procedure?

Yeah, definitely not typical thankfully or no one would get it done.

Mine was more along the lines of @SaltyNZ.  Done under local and although driven home afterwards, minimal pain relief required and back to normal exercise in about a week.  Also no scalpels.  All Laser.  Much "cooler".  Oh, yeah, the local jab was the least fun bit.

All the best for a speedy recovery though.  Pretty sure you had a collective clenching of legs from the entire male population on here.

I got a text from the on call nurse on the Saturday asking how i was feeling?  I explained what had happened.  She said she would forward it on to the doctors.  This morning I got a call from the doctor.  Who asked how things were, I described (politely) how the previous days had been.  He asked if there was anything they could do, I said a refund would be nice.  He said a hematoma is one of the possible side effects but he would talk with his partners.  I am not expecting much truth be told.

Wow. Get well soon. My eyes are watering on your behalf. Did you find out what caused the issue? I presume you will be on the phone to ACC!

If anyone else is interested in that path, I have some Elastrator rings in the shed. No nurses involved!

What do you know, Snip is refunding the full amount as an act of good will.

I do understand that my reaction was very unlikely and I got unlucky, but I do wonder who keeps track of this type of thing?

My three days in hospital, drugs and surgery must have cost tax payers $10,000 of thousands of dollars

I got the mrs snipped half way through the cesarean so avoided all this drama.  The kids were her idea after all.

That sounds like a terrible way to talk about your wife, like she is a piece of property or an animal.

Ouch! My eyes are still watering after reading that. Get well soon!

My experience, thankfully, was far less stressful. The only problems were the way they exposed the vein for the anaesthetic (a not so gentle squeeze), and the fact that the Dr shut up shop and did a runner before I could have the follow up "shooting blanks" test. But that was over 16 years ago, and the family hasn't been accidentally extended. So he must've done something right.

It was also pretty cool getting to walk like a cowboy for a week afterwards. :-)
