How does a radar detector tell you there is a speed camera around - thought they only worked for police car radars?
(or Petrol Stations ... from my memory of the one my father had in the early 90s)

Speed cameras (fixed or van) use microwave to measure speed, so radar detectors detect them.

I don't know if they detect the new miniature ones that the Police have just bought?

Most modern detectors also detect laser speed measuring equipment.

Pretty sure the new ones use a laser, as they can ping people in multiple lanes now, rather than just 1. Laser is significantly easier to detect and jam from memory than the microwaves.

Yeah - I understand police aren't that keen on radar detectors.

Jammers on the other hand I am pretty sure they would nail you to the wall for.

They are technically illegal. It's a grey area. If you are constantly emitting the same signal as theirs, and they are only bursting...then the cop is technically jamming you. Haha. I've heard of people blaming parking sensors, but I've never encountered a real life case where someone has jammed a police officers signal and gotten away with it. They also cost +$4000 dollars to install properly, so they aren't very common either.

I've found the likes of Lamborghini and Ferrari often have them installed. Occasionally when you do a search for "Jammer" in TradeMe, it comes up with the occasional Audi. I have no idea how effective they are.

I don't understand the idea of speed hundreds of dollars on radar detectors and or thousands on jammers. There is a very inexpensive way to avoid getting pinged by a speed camera or a Police Officer, that is don't speed. It actually saves you money.

What about all the units sold on Trademe and by Repco and Super cheap I am sure they are not all purchased by Lambo drivers? it's illogical

Radar jammers are illegal... you have to have a license to emit microwave energy (other than within a few frequency bands, with limited power).

I believe that laser jammers cannot be illegal. The speed-detection laser is infrared. In our sensory world, that's heat. And banning (or licensing) heat sources isn't practical.

My old boss had a jammer is his V8 commodore wagon circa 2004.
It would go nuts, he'd jam on the brakes and switch it off at the same time.
I was in it once when he did it. The cop was about 50 metres beyond a 50k sign at the end of a 100k zone 10.30pm (SH1 northbound as you come into Pukerua Bay). No ticket. Didn't even get pulled over. He was probably doing 70-80 as he went passed the 50 sign, slowing down when it went off. The noise scared the crap out of me.
He probably would've been done without it, but I think it's a pretty stupid speed change and a revenue raising place to sit. The cop obviously had it aimed right about where the sign was.

He'd been pulled over before and asked what the bits were on the front. He said "aftermarket parking sensors".

Why didn't your boss slow down before the 50 sign? I really don't get why people roar past the sign at 100km/h then slow down over the next couple of hundred meters and bitch when a cop is close by.

IIRC the standard policy is (was) not to target speeding within 250m of a speed reduction sign. That was of course depending on the circumstances as if there was increased danger (e.g. school or poor weather) then the cop could use their discretion. It may have changed now. The cop may look like they are sitting right by the sign, but they are probably targeting a couple of hundred meters down the road. That said if a driver is incapable of adjusting their speed down before reaching the sign, then they don't deserve to have a drivers licence.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

umm it's a rhetorical question (without a question mark) of course, as no one really knows. i was ticketed once and i could swear it wasn't even amber, that it was green when i crossed at 40kph in the wet. but who am i to challenge a cop "yes it was yellow. no there was no danger in slamming on the non ABS brakes in your 1989 honda civic hatch in the wet." if i had a dash cam i'd be able to find out who was right.

I thought the law was that speed changes happen in the higher speed zone. I can't look it up. But I think legally you need to be doing 50 before you pass the sign, if it's a 50K sign that is.

the law says so yes.

the police code of conduct however says they won't put a speed camera within x metres from a new speed signage.

anecdotally, they do :D

coz my dad (they slowest driver but tunnel vision) and my uncle - not sure how he drives. got pinged. but that's still 2nd hand info

There's probably been several changes in Police Road Traffic management since their "Code of Conduct" was last seen on their website. Even when they did have a policy it wasn't uniformly applied.
