Correct, you could make assumptions, but you never know why they are choosing the fast lane.

There can be lots of reasons for speed differential. Yesterday I found myself wanting to go faster than a lot of cars. I was 1 up and they had passengers so their comfort speed is lower than mine. I'm local and know the road well, they may not have been.

I expected a slow trip so just chilled, tried to hang back and overtook when I could.

As they left, about 4pm, all were pulled over at the checkpoint and – before being asked to blow into the machine – were made to give their names and addresses, and show their driver's licences.

In the days that followed, at least 10 of them received visits from police officers, asking questions about their association with Exit, a pro-euthanasia group.

The claims have been confirmed by multiple women at the meeting.

I started a thread related to this based on the news item about some elderly lady's helium balloon kit being confiscated. If these reports are anywhere close to true, there needs to be some kind of investigation and accountability. This may sound funny but it is absolutely unacceptable. The job of the police is to enforce the law, not to act as self-appointed guardians of whatever morality they happen to think everyone else should be subject to. This smacks of some mid-level official taking it upon theirself to dictate the behaviour of others. It is not illegal to have meetings that discuss euthanasia. It is not illegal to commit suicide. This seems to be a blatant attempt to use police power to intimidate a particular group of people while euthanasia is under discussion in Parliament. It is absolutely unacceptable and I hope more people will say so.

I drive from Otaki Beach to Porirua 4/5 times a week. Mostly outside of peak traffic and after nearly two years of roadwords along SH1 I can't believe what I see on a weekly basis with people's speed. I've followed people doing 30 in 50's, 50 in 70/80's, 70/80 in 100's and seen plenty doing well over 120kph and risking all sorts of carnage trying to over take once they get to a passing lane.

But perhaps there is an mitigating factor on my journey.

Here are the speed limits I encounter from door to door 50,70,50,70,100,80,100,70,100,50,80,50,70,100,70,100,80,70,80,50,100,50,100,50.

That's 24 changes to the speed limit changes in just 52kms door to door.

I consider myself a good driver and pay attention to the speed limits, but miss just one of those signs and you can easily find yourself doing 70 in a 100 and be none the wiser.

Yep, happens all the time. Followed an unmarked police car full of uniformed officers all the way through a 70 doing 100kph on one occassion. He added insult to injury by then doing 80 through the following 100 and no-one would over take him !

Wow maybe they were waiting for someone to overtake them by accident. Sneaky! (Just guessing from their behaviour in the 70 zone)
