Personally, as range is not a significant factor for your use, I’d say save the money and go for the Gen1 (as I did) and use the time to learn more about EV driving. I’d also really encourage you to trial a ‘longer’ distance trip like Whangarei or Taupo in your leaf sometime and see how much difference the Quick charge every 100km or so is. My young family (2 boys @6&9) actually found we pretty much stop every hour or so for roughly 10-20 mins anyway for toilet and ‘play’ breaks.

The one time we wished we could ‘just drive on’ was a late leaving time and some tired/sleeping kids on the way home from Whangarei. Every other time the $14 return cost definitely made the obligatory stops worthwhile for us.

Thanks man, it was actually one of your posts that I bookmarked about your car purchase details and useful range that has proven most useful. The Gen 1 X I'm looking at sounds very similar albeit with 80% SOH. The Gen 2 happens to have an aero kit and I think that is influencing more than it should be - can't let the boyracer in me go.

If you can afford the jump, I really love my gen 2 with bose sound. Mines a 30kw x 2016 with the bose and 360° parking cameras and it really makes parking so much easier.
The bose sub in the back ads fantastic depth to the sound

@nimma as long as either is from reputable EV dealer, going Gen 1 (assuming you mean 2011-2012 model) seems reasonable.

PS - Stating Generation 1/2 is becoming ambiguous, with the 40kWh being labelled gen 2 by some and gen 3 by others. I think simpler to state the year and battery capacity.

Agreed....especially as Nissan call the 2018 model "LEAF v2.0"

I haven't been up close to one, as I have a LEAF S model, but I always thought it was a sub in the boot of the LEAF with the Bose upgrade.

For a rookie planning an out-of-town North Island road trip, is anyone here able to advise, please, which of electrolease.nz or PlugShare is the best help in finding your way to fast-charging stations not previously visited? Both would appear to offer supplementary help to what's on ChargeNet. I'd also like to know how often I'm likely to find a fast charger broken, in prolonged use or, maybe worst of all, its space occupied or blocked by a parked ICE vehicle. I hope my enquiry won't produce a spate of "horror stories" !

Well, I just pulled the trigger on a 30X. 2015 model, 9,700km on the clock. The test drive was the first time I'd ever driven an electric car. I... am impressed.

PlugShare has basically all the chargers in NZ on it and is regularly updated by users when the charger is faulty or broken. Te Kauwhata is the only charger (between Hamilton and Auckland) that I’ve found to be regularly queued for, so charging in Hamilton and then Pukekohe is advisable if your batteries can do the 80km of slow uphills.

We’ve done Hamilton to whangerei happily and I DEFINITELY suggest 80% charging at Jacques four square in Kaiwaka.
To get you aver the hold to whangerei.

Given that the battery temperature increases with every rapid charge and we are in the summer months how may rapid charges can the battery sustain i.e. Drive-charge-Drive-charge before the temperature increases to a point where charging or driving of the vehicle becomes limited and we have to stop to let it cool?

If it doesn't fit. Get a bigger hammer!

My Leaf went into the 'red' with 3 subsequent fast charges within 12 hours on a round trip between Whangarei and Auckland last week with stops.I had all temperature bars but one after the last charge to get me home. It was 26 degrees or something, so there was not much natural cooling that day. I bet that was not good for the battery, but I came home. No red lights on the dash or driving impairment. It was also the first time for me I had to fast charge three times in one day with temperatures above 25 degrees. Keen to hear other experiences and how best to deal with it.
