Teslas gen 3 wall charger is $890 and could cost $700-1k to fit (really depending on your house, position etc).

You get the mobile charger which can do up to 32 amps/7kw, I've been using this on 8amps since I got my car on a normal (but rcd'd) socket.

How fast you need to charge depends on how much range you need to add overnight or whatever.

My commute is 40-45km and I get 120-140km overnight.

Also note any standard wall box charger should work ok - model 3 uses a type 2 port for AC charging

If I'm pricing this up, would I need to add a few thousand dollars to add a faster charger to the home? How much would that cost and do I have to have one?

It depends on your daily commute. If you're doing less than 150km a day then the 3 pin charger that the car comes with will be enough to recharge the car again overnight.

However, if your breaker board is in the garage near where you will be charging the car then adding a new 32A circuit for a charger will be fairly straight forward and cost less than $1k.

If it helps I got a Tesla wall charger from the Tesla online store for $800 and the electrician cost me $1400 all in to install and wire up a new 32A circuit. Cable run was from distribution board at one end of the garage to the other side of garage. I used one of the Telsa "approved" electricians.

The electrician charged you $1400? How many hours work was that?

The old gen 2 charger 'needs' a $500 RCD fitted where the new gen 3 one doesnt.

It was $1250 + gst which I think is a standard price. It was 3 - 4 hours. They did a nice, neat job.

Thanks, I'm fairly out of the loop of current electrician hourly prices!

It was a Gen2 I got with RCD on main board with 40A breaker and a 32A breaker next to the power switch close to the wall unit itself. I wanted the charger mounted on the outside of the garage to I could access from the  drive way and car port (I have other cars in garage).

At the request of someone who was on the fence about purchasing a Model 3 and asked for a look; I offered and drove from Dunedin to Gore on Saturday to show them.

They ended up placing the order while I was driving back home (though had completely forgotten about getting them to use a referral link (with no local Superchargers, it wasn't a massive concern))

Not a particularly complicated job. I normally use my neighbor, who is an electrician, for any sparky work but just in case there was some future issue I thought I'd play it safe and go with a Tesla approved crowd.

It's not too late for them to apply your referral link. If they contact their Tesla sales person and pass your link on they will apply it. As long as it's done before they take delivery.

What was the other ~$850 for? Think I'd have gone with the neighbour.

The wall charger itself was about $800.
