Always going to have those "theories" that both big oil and car manufacturers are trying to limit the growth of anything alternative because it will cost them money

There are also the theories that the issues surrounding the alternatives have already been solved, but in order to make more money things are drip feed to the general population

There is ample evidence to suggest these are theories in the same way that gravity is a theory.

The EV1?

I don't know about that, the Bolt looks like it will raise the bar pretty high

with 200mile (300+kms) becoming the likely 2017 benchmark, range anxiety is becoming a smaller and smaller issue...

It would do all that if they really wanted to sell it.

GM UK announced yesterday there won't be a right-hand-drive version. That means we won't see 2nd-hand Bolts and Australia won't be getting them new or second hand.

This is a compliance car for the EU and California and any other jurisdiction that REQUIRES EV sales...of car makers pay penalties to the government or compliant competitors.

The NZ government is promoting EVs, but I can't see car vendors here selling affordable EVs. A few and expensive is what we'll see...and the after-market importers will carry on scouring the world for second-hand EVs.

I'm beginning to think we should change to left-hand drive. We pay a high price for being among the handful of standouts.

In case anyone isn't aware, the best app for finding EV charging stations is "Plugshare". It's the most complete compilation for NZ. You can also use it to activate charge.net.nz sites if you're logged into the app.

NZ looks like this.

Green are public charging sites that offer 10amp, 16amp or 32amp AC charging. Many are caravan parks and holiday camps happy to offer charging for roughly $2/hour during business hours for casual or for free if you stay the night. A Japanese LEAF with a 3.3kw AC internal charger can be fully charged from empty in 7-8 hours at 16amp. You're usually not empty. A UK LEAF with a 6.6kw internal AC charger will charge at the same speed as a Japanese LEAF on a 16amp charger...or twice as fast on a 32amp charger (empty to full in 3-4 hours at 32amp).

Orange are public charging sites that offer 50kw DC "CHAdeMO" fast charging or 43kw DC "CSS/SAE Combo Type 1" fast charging. Some also have Tesla-compatible plugs.

A 50kw DC fast charge for a LEAF, from almost empty to 80%, will take about 30 minutes. Each 1% after that takes roughly another minute as the fast chargers all slow down to protect the battery from damage. So 5% to 95% could take 45 minutes. About the same amount of time it takes to go to a cafe and order / eat lunch.....which is exactly what I do.

China should see 450,000 EVs sold this year in total, based on the rate of sales increase so far this year. That's a 1.5% share of the total auto market in China.

That will also be half of all the EVs sold on the planet in 2016.

If they continue to improve and decide to do a Right-hand drive model, we might by buying affordable Chinese EVs a few years from now.

Although, its being driven by incentives that allow buyers to dodge restictions on new cars in cities, +also the battery quality might not be that great

Looks like a paid "Dirty Politics" campaign is underway against EVs.

Those comments appear on every EV story...and they are there first.

Someone is paying very close attention as these sorts of comments are appearing literally everywhere it is possible to make a comment on every web site anywhere.

A Tesla 85 and above can do that now, so I think you need to add a price spec to your criteria :)

Unless you normally drive 340km without a single stop, you may be happy with a car that can do 70% of that range and give you a chance to use the loo and eat a sandwich for half an hour at Mangaweka or Waiouru while it charges. That's definitely going to be an option in the next 12-18 months.....and you get to go zero emissions.

More generally, I'm baffled by the lack of willingness to make any compromises at all to reduce emissions now in the face of the slow-motion climate emergency underway now. Not even 20-30 minutes you'd probably stop anyway on that once-a-year trip. I'm not getting at you, Mike.....I see it a lot. Most people seem to have no appreciation of what it means to be seeing climatic change occuring on an *annual* basis on a planetary scale. That's a train-wreck in progress in real terms, but we aren't used to operating on those time scales in assessing risks. Then consider the 20 year lag in CO2 feedback. The changes we're seeing now are the consequence of CO2 released in the 90s....and we've released a lot more since then. Today, we're just talking about limiting how bad it will get. We're already well down that road and no sign of slowing down.

I absolutely support any initiative that will save our only home. However being disabled it is difficult stopping in some locales to recharge and comfort stops. If the Army Museum had chargers that would be excellent but the Napier route has some challenges.

Also the run from Waiouru to Taupo circa 120km given the terrain will be marginal on a charge

I'd have no issue with having to stop for a 30 minute top-up on say an AKL to Napier trip - I do that run two or three times a year, and in the car I would normally stop somewhere (usually Putaruru or Tokoroa or Taupo).

The issue I can see happening though, is that by the time I get an EV, a lot more other people will also have them, and there will be queues for those EV chargers, so your planned 30 minute top up might take an hour, an hour and a half while you wait for other people. Unless there is another one 10 minutes up the road, it isn't like you can just decide to push on. Range anxiety will still be a major factor in longer trips.

That said, I'd happily have a Leaf for my commute, or at home (on Waiheke). The wife could use a full charge on a Leaf for her whole week's 'commuting' - about a 2 km round trip - and errands.

Seriously considering it for her next car.
