ToPGuNZ:Still surprises me, although it shouldn't with the number of times I see it now, the muppets watching a movie/tv show while driving. Even more so the ones with the phone sitting on the dash above the steering wheel blocking their view of the road. I do report to the Police Community Road Watch whenever possible but wish penalties were a lot harsher.

You mean "...wish there were ACTUALLY Penalties and Enforcement!" ? (I do)

Yeah that is how I generally feel but my wife said she spotted someone being pulled over the other day would you believe for using a phone so there is some enforcement just no were near enough. Wonder were the trial of cameras recording into front of cars got to, heading to google to check.

It rained in Auckland today. Every muppet in existence decided today would be a good day to join me on the Motorway.

Was in a line of traffic doing 20-30kmh under the speed limit south of the Moonshine Bridge on Saturday evening.  The blocker at the front seemed to realise on the passing lane and sped up to 110.

But, you guessed it, slowed right back down to 70 straight afterwards.

On finally managing to get past on the dual carriageway south of Silverstream, was a 60ish man with a phone clamped to his ear with one hand.  Not even trying to hide the fact he was on the phone.

As usual, laws are only for the lawful.

I empathise but I'm not sure how the age and gender of the driver is relevant.

It’s always relevant. Just ask your insurance company.

Sometimes the erratic driving is someone a lot older who probably really shouldn't be driving any longer.  Sometimes it's a learner who doesn't yet have the experience to be comfortable at highway speeds.  Sometimes it's someone of any age or gender who has zero spatial awareness or awareness of anything outside of their little bubble.  Sometimes, it's someone who should know better deciding that a phone call is more important than the lives of those around them.

It's just a shame I didn't have someone else with me who could have called *555 (or 105 now) to report them.

If the situation is serious enough there is an exception to the phone rule

"A driver may, while driving a vehicle, use a mobile phone if—

(a)the driver is using the phone to make a 111 or *555 call; and

(b)it is unsafe or impracticable for the driver to stop and park the vehicle to make the call."

but probably not in that case.

While mine is mounted hands free and connected to the car system, it still requires unlocking the phone which takes my concentration away from driving.  I didn't feel that it was life threatening enough to add to the problem in this case.  I know how good (not very) I am at multitasking.

Does this thread cover Muppet manufacturers?

From: https://nypost.com/2023/09/06/nissan-kia-collect-data-about-drivers-sexual-activity/

(I note the word "may"... and from the USA)

Your car may be keeping tabs on your “sex drive.”

Car makers Nissan and Kia can collect data on their drivers’ “sexual activity” and “sex lives” — and may sell the info to third-party advertisers, according to a shocking study by an internet privacy watchdog.

The creepy collection of personal information by the two auto companies earned them failing grades from The Mozilla Foundation, maker of the Firefox web browser, which ran privacy checks on 25 car brands.

“This invasive harvesting of information is collected via a web of sensors, microphones, cameras and the phones, apps, and connected services you use in your vehicle,” according to Mozilla Foundation.

The car firms can then take that data and sell it to or share it with vendors, insurance companies and others, according to watchdog.

Of the 25 car brands that were reviewed, Nissan’s privacy policy “is probably the most mind boggling creepy, scary, sad, messed up privacy policy we have ever read,” according to Mozilla Foundation.

“Here’s why: They come right out and say they can collect and share your sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic information and other sensitive personal information for targeted marketing purposes,” the foundation wrote.

Having borrowed someone's ford ranger to do a pickup of something I bought today that I can't fit in the tesla and my ute is still stuck on the lawn, I now appreciate why the drivers of them are so slow. No grip at all on the wet road.

Utes with empty trays are really dodgy. I know people who put sandbags in the tray when it's empty as otherwise the rear is all over the place in the wet. This has been the case with utes forever.

Could be any number of contributing factors from tyre compound or wear, weight or lack of in the tray, road surfaces, driver foot weight ;-) .  I have very few grip issues with mine unless I get too enthusiastic departing wet intersections or off camber roundabouts.

They definitely are not a "performance" vehicle but I've never had any issues with being "so slow" unless I'm towing the car trailer, though even then I'm often still passing normal cars going well under the 90kmh towing limit.

Last week I saw a vehicle blocking a busy footpath with the driver sitting in it. Large numbers of pedestrians were doing gymnastics to get past and giving filthy looks to the driver who seemed to be completely oblivious to the chaos that she was causing.
