I went over the Saddle Road from Ashhurst to Woodville last weekend. Technically it's not actually a state highway, but has been the default SH3 to Hawkes Bay since the Manawatu Gorge shut for good in April 2017.

Wow, what big improvement has been made to that road since the last time I did it! If anyone wants to look, Google street view of the whole route is fully up to date now.

Ōtaki to north of Levin highway gets green light following Government review

Good to see it is (slowly) moving forward. I travel the existing route fairly regularly and a replacement can't come soon enough.

Hopefully National will get back in in time to ensure it's actually built as 4 lanes from day one. I'm glad it's moving forward in some form, but building it as 2 lane only and then possibly making it 4 lane later is just short sighted.

Then don't read the headlines, this project is pretty much dead in the water at the moment..

Ōtaki to north of Levin project update – October 2019

Confirming the designation of the new route will help us identify where it will ultimately sit within the preferred 300m wide corridor, securing it for the future and providing certainty for current and future development, as well as land owners.

These steps are an important part of the long-term transport network planning process. Construction will not begin until these steps are complete, final design has been undertaken, consents have been granted and when funding is made available in the future. Given current funding is heavily constrained this is not expected in the next ten years.

Also in May Ministers basically told off the NZTA board for looking to purchase properties along the route when the project was  "out in the future"

The Board replied that was the way they worked once a project has been designated they started to buy up the required land over time to give locals certainty.....

4 months later the Government replaced the board.....

River Road Silverstream to Upper Hutt anyone?? Retrofitted additional passing lanes, but should have been four lanes when built.

Will no one rid me of this turbulent government?

I would like the ones with two parallel rails improved with better affordable services that could see road and air travel dependency much reduced.

The last major rebuild on River Rd for "Safety Improvements" did nothing to ease congestion on it, just added a cheese grater up the middle.  When, while dong such a major ground-up rebuild, the sensible and obvious option (therefore the one not taken) should have been to make the whole thing 4 lanes with only the one merge point at the Moonshine Bridge (at least until that gets upgraded also).

I have seen overbridges in France built with 4 lanes when the road either end only has 2 because they know they will eventually have to widen the road, but do not want to build a new bridge at the same time.

Another reason why we need the expressway thru to Levin:

Finally! The government has committed to extending the four lane expressway from Otaki to north of Levin. I'm very pleased this is going ahead.

5 years till shovels are in the ground however, would of been good to see this done sooner as judging by the distance of this road (24km) it'll take a few years to build.

Totally agree I think there is a bigger need than levin to otaki , all the great work at Hayward’s and Melling will be undone with the bottle necks into silver stream and the Wairarapa . The queue now starts at Hayward’s .The new builds in Wallaceville are great but the 700 houses need to enter the motorway somewhere.

Seems to me this is just an election ploy?

National were already going to fund most of those roading projects before Labour canned them.

Either way its very good to see a lot of these projects given the green light - especially the Otaki to North of Levin. Once transmission gully and the rest of those upgrades are done, travelling north out of Wellington will be great.

Edit - are they still talking about doing 2 lanes for the Manawatu Gorge replacement? I reckon that's mental. Do it once and do it right, not a half cocked job that will need to be re-done in 5-10 years. That attitude just baffles me. It's never cheaper to fix it later. Toll it if you need to.
