I drove over the Napier-Taupo Highway today for the first time since they reduced the speed limit for 2/3's of the highway to 80km/h, straight up I have to say the highway now feels awfully slow and just makes it feel like it is a never-ending journey.

Feels like this is a band-aid solution where instead of fixing the problems on the highway that they gone for the cheap and simple by slowing it down.

Given the terrain it crosses I can't ever see the highway upgraded to a 4-lane expressway but they must be able to do something with it

State Highway 3 especially mt messenger.

They've talked about building a new road next to it as it's so windy..

But like any other council and government all they do is talk and talk.

Nothing's been done since I saw the Daily Newspaper on the proposal in around 1993..

It’s perfectly possible to drive it safely. It’s the incompetent drivers not the road that is the problem.

It astonishes me that they never seem to look at driver training as a significant part of the answer.

If kiwis are acknowledged as, shall we say, not the safest drivers in the world - and I think that has to be a reasonable conclusion - then why are they not working out how to shift to a driver training methodology that improves that from the beginning of a driver’s career on the road?

If your parents can’t drive well, allowing them to pass on their bad habits and attitudes to the next generation of drivers seems unlikely to solve the problem.

Here, for example, is what happens in Germany:

“In Germany, the theoretical and practical driving tests are conducted through driving schools (Fahrschulen). Therefore, in order to take these tests, you will need to be enrolled at a driving school. Often you are also required to have proof that you have enrolled before you can be issued with a licence by the driving licensing authority.

If you are learning to drive for the first time, you must go to a driving school; lay instruction is not permitted (i.e. you cannot be taught by a friend or family member). German law dictates that you must attend at least 14 lessons of theory classes and 12 practical lessons of “special training rides” (Sonderfahrten). You must complete these classes before you can apply for your theory or practical tests.”

The problem with that is that NZ thinks it has a god given right to drive and only the law abiding will abide by the law.. We already have huge numbers of people driving without a license, on expired licenses, on the wrong class of license, whilst forbidden to drive and of course bribing people to get licenses etc. The problem is so bad that the police started letting people off tickets for many of those offences if they got their license within a month or two. If people won't pay the measly few hundred it takes to get a full license, there's no way they are going to pay thousands for professional training lol. If we made people actually learn from a professional, at their cost, that number would skyrocket.

i wonder how much of the billions of roading budget it would cost to subsidies driver training?

Things like anti skid courses are very valuable especially with the state of some of our country roads, even some of our big state highways (27 im looking at you)

but with anything in this country it till take YEARS for it to filter down to the masses

you will still get that truck doing 75 in clear conditions on a straight piece of road holding up 50 other vehicles.

I want SH38 to be paved all the way from Murupara to Wairoa. It's a gravel road for over 40km after Lake Waikaremoana. Not suitable for ordinary cars in bad weather.....It would be a good alternative to SH5 (Taupo to Napier) or SH35 (Opotiki to Gisborne around the East Cape) or SH2 (via Waioeka Gorge) if travelling from BoP or Auckland to Hawkes Bay.

The fact that we have a lot of criminals on the road is a matter for the police and courts, not a reason not to improve driver training.

I’m sure there’s a technology solution, such as cars that require your driving licence to be inserted and read, then compared to a database online, before they will operate.
