Nissan sells ICE cars too, repeated articles saying how unhappy EV owners are with Nissan NZ especially if Nissan are perceived as being stoppy and pedantic may result in lower public opinion of them as a company and possible reduction in ICE too.

ie they were unreasonable in fixing Nissan EV so how can I be sure they wont drag the chain about some issue with by ICE Nissan.

I doubt Toyota for example would be doing the same thing if they were in the same position. It does not give a good brand reputation, IMHO.

Indeed. I can't fathom such an attitude. I can understand that it would cost them money to train technicians to generally service what is in reality a small number of vehicles, but surely since they are owned by Nissan group (and send their profits away) then they could also send their costs away. Training one guy to run a program going around updating people's cars is a relatively small cost compared to the brand harm caused by their current attitude.

They are not even updating in Japan yet so it’s unlikely they ever will here. They may never update in Japan.

There are fewer software updates in Japan in general. Remember this patch came from the lawsuit happy US where Nissan has to tread softly.

In Japan the procedure seems to be that if the car is problematic, export it!

My car was just patched, it went from 80.6 to 91.7. The Dash estimate now seems shockingly accurate.

One can only assume that Nissan New Zealand is completely overloaded with customers and can't possibly fit in some lousy Leafs.

I understand and accept that the Nissan NZ is under no obligations warranty wise, but surely there is money to be made selling spares, servicing and SOFTWARE! I'm sure given the choice between genuine software and "hacked" software, owners would wait, and pay Nissan NZ $250.

Toyota NZ gave JDM imports the cold shoulder in the early days, but came to their senses when they realised there was money to be made not only on after sales service but also after-import service.

"Some" is an interesting description,

At current growth rates its highly likely that there will be more 2nd hand leafs registered in 2019 than the entire sales of new Nissan cars

In 2017 Nissan sold 4700 new cars and 1903 leafs were registered

In the first 6 months of 2018, Nissan sold 2079 new cars and there were just under 1400 newly imported leafs registered,

( Nissan also sell a similar number of new Commercials, utes etc,)- but on a car for car basis imported leafs will start to be larger than their entire sales soon...

To be fair, the Leafs imported to NZ have already been subsidised in the country they are from, no such subsidies in NZ. So hard for Nissan NZ to sell cars at prices that would allow them to sell any serious volume.

That said, as pointed out by others: Nissan is part of a world wide group, and should take care of their product a little better for the good of their brand.

In any case, it would probably be a business oportunity to support the imported Leafs, because I don't think anyone expect them to do everything for free - although I think fixing the bug in their Leafs software should be covered world wide.

A few of the Nissan dealers are starting to get in on the act so this could be the start of something.

The other thing that is different now to when the decision was made to not sell that Gen 1.5 Leaf is that Nissan NZ will be selling the Gen 2. You'd think that would make them take this a bit more seriously.

I think you will find that there are clauses in their contracts with Nissan that restrict their ability to use overseas grey market sourcing......

Gazley's Nissan in Wellington sells second hand Leafs, sourced from Japan.
