Even a relatively "simple" starting point of having to resit theory and practical tests when you renew your licence every 10 years rather than just paying money for the continued "right" to drive. While it wouldn't eliminate everything, it could at least help provide a refresher on any rules that may have changed in the 40 or so years since people originally sat their licences.
I think that the majority of people know the rules but choose to break them by varying degrees when it suits. This is reasonably clear whenever you come across a police car in traffic as everyone suddenly remembers how to drive within the rules.

That wont remove entrenched habits and the belief that the vast majority of those on our roads hold that they are the worlds best driver, their cars are a toy and the public carriageways are their personal play ground. We need to start the driver training when young and install the correct behaviour and habits.

Fully agree. But we have to start somewhere.
Picking off the low hanging fruit of the relatively easily measured speeding offences hasn't achieved as much as was suggested it should.
Reducing road speed limits also hasn't achieved a whole lot.
I have no idea how to trigger a change in the overall mindset of drivers here. I can only improve my own driving habits and attitude.
SH2 between Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. Remove all controlled intersections.
MikeB4:
@Dulouz that would be absolute insanity, the death rate would be horrific especially the Belmont lights. There were horrific accidents there before those lights were installed.
I'm not suggesting using roundabouts or giveaway signs, I would replace the controlled intersections with interchanges which would require significant works.

why dont they have interchanges there?
i always hated that piece of road when i was down in wellington

they are on a main state highway, has significant traffic flow yet they put in traffic lights which slows down traffic and from some of the videos ive seens leads to some horrendous red light runners. the mind boggles.
how much is a life worth?

Every interchange that has gone in so far, Maungaraki, Haywards (SH58) has taken years of lobbying. I recall the current Melling project has bounced around for a least two decades. I absolutely agree about the red light runners, Kelson and Belmont lights are very dangerous for that.

I'd like to see Sh2 turned into full motorway, should be possible at least to Melling once that new walk/cycleway is completed. Pipe dream would be to put a 4-lane wide tunnel through the Remutaka Range so no risk of a detour all the way to Palmerston North if the hill road is closed due to things like snow, slips or accidents.
Also I would like to see the Cross Valley link built which I know Hutt City Council and the local MPs make some noise about every time there is an election
MikeB4:
@Lias you are right on the button.
I have believed for a very long time that driving training should be part of the school curriculum. It is an important part of training for life and is definitely life saving.
I always feel a great disturbance in the force when you and I agree on things lol. There is a lot of basic life skills stuff that we really should be teaching in school and aren't, driving is most certainly one of those things IMHO.

I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. I used to think that improving state highways was a good thing. But not long after SH6 between Blenheim and Nelson was improved, they slashed the speed limits. If they make any more improvements, and subsequent speed limit reductions, it may be quicker to walk.
