I've previously wondered about folding/portable helmets for This Sort of Thing.

Lo and behold, I'm not the first:

Morpher Folding Helmet
Ftiier
Brooks
Plixi
Ecohelmet (that one looks a bit suspect to me, but anything is better than nothing I guess).

Anyone tried/recommend anything along these lines? Even where a helmet is provided, the idea of putting on something used (potentially repeatedly) by others is not making the germophobe in me sing for joy.

So with the scooters, if you let go of the accelerator button the scooter will slow down somewhat. Either surface friction or if they have regen braking (not sure).

Problem with that is just like automatic cars, people hold the accelerator right up until the point that they need to brake and rely on them. Not so great with how stiff they are on Lime.

In that lady''s case I don't think a helmet would have helped much. The force that fractured her neck would still be applied there, maybe avoid the concussion or scrapes/bruises. Shes quoted in the NZH saying they should provide helmets with a lead attached without considering the dangers of having hanging wires when travelling at speed (getting caught on objects). Also a speed limit of 15km/h is fast jog or running speed. People with a powerful foot could probably speed past them on regular scooters, not to mention enforcing it going down hills.

Whatever happened to learned experience? Same as learning to ride a bike, scooter, skateboard, skates, surfboard, skis, snowboard etc. and so on.

Went away in preference to protecting everyone from themselves and removing the understanding that actions have consequences. Thus a whole generation of people who blame anyone and anything other than themselves for things happening to them.

There are Limes in Brisbane and they all have a helmet. Was over there for 2 days and didn't see a single person riding without wearing so must be some pretty heavy penalties for not doing so. Guess they need a stick from council/govt in NZ to provide helmets.

That woman who broke her neck is just stupid and should stop embarrassing herself and shut up. Heard her being interviewed on the radio this afternoon making a fool of herself trying to argue her point, all the listener feedback after was ripping into her.

She had an English accent and is a nanny so I'm guessing a resident at best. As sbiddle says how about a bloody thank you to ACC and the NZ taxpayer for funding her undeserved medical cover.

On my way home tonight at 11pm, I saw six guys with one car and two scooters. The car was following the scooter and regularly stop and take turns riding on the scooters on the road, sometimes down the centre line, with no helmets. Tonight it is 19C which is good to Wellington region.

I think Onzo proved how viable provided helmets were.

I don't think I've recently seen any Onzo user, the few that they are, wear a helmet at all. Pretty sure they're all missing or rendered useless due to mistreatment. The pick up and go type of user isn't going to be carrying a helmet on them at all times on the off chance they get to use a Lime.

Bit harsh, we pay to patch up all manner people who do all manner of stupid things to themselves. I don't think being a complete twat or having an English accent should disqualify her from civilised care.

Funny. If referring to the quote used - says if the situation warrants it.

Media seem to be beating around the fact they're allowed on the road, un-helmeted until theres a change made.

That quote in isolation is indeed a bit alarmist as it doesn't reflect the law and regulations as they currently stand.

However, elsewhere in the article I feel it's appropriately addressed:

"Anyone using a vehicle that is not classified as a motor vehicle, such as a scooter, can be charged with careless or inconsiderate use of that vehicle if the circumstances warrant an intervention of that nature."

I don't think that's too unfair, as I'd expect cops to be appropriately dealing to any dangerous driving whatever the mode of transport.

I'm waiting to be stopped by a cop for riding my Mi scooter on the road, especially as I do occasionally ride past the police station.

Councillors on the City Strategy Committee today voted 8-5 in favour of the trial which will initially last six months, but can be extended by 12 months. The extension will allow time for consultation and policy engagement.

Seven companies have approached the Council to operate electric scooter share schemes in Wellington: Blip Scooters, Flamingo, Fuutr, Lime, Onzo, Scoot International, and Goat.

Licences will be given to two companies following evaluation of their applications, and between 600 and 800 e-scooters could be on the streets by mid-March.

Public submitters spoke both in favour and against the trial, with opponents concerned about footpath safety, and that pedestrians would lose precedence.

Mayor Justin Lester, who backed the trial, says it gives the Council more control over how the scooters are rolled out across the city.

“The trial will test the demand for e-scooters, how they fit in the context of Wellington, and rider behaviour,” says the Mayor.

“We are keen to see if an e-scooter share scheme encourages more people to replace some private vehicle trips – whether they just want to get across town or use it as part of their commute.”

Councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman, the Council’s Portfolio Leader for Transport Strategy, stressed the e-scooters were on trial.

“One has to be brave enough to say ‘let’s trial something and see what happens’. I expect to see officers monitor usage and how the providers would educate their users.”

Operators can track where scooters go and set electronic boundaries (‘geo-fencing’) for where they can’t.

This will be used to enforce a ban on hiring e-scooters within the busy Courtenay precinct after 9pm, Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, by disabling scooters parked in that area after 9pm.

Councillors voted that e-scooters should not be allowed on footpaths in the CBD or suburban shopping centres.

They also voted for more conditions, including:

Restrictions on their use on the seaward side of Oriental Parade from Herd Street to Freyberg Pool
They must obey existing cycling speed limits on the waterfront and be encouraged to keep left
Scooters have registration numbers so improper use can more easily be identified
The operators will be charged $45 per scooter for the six-month trial
Room will be left for new operators, who are not yet ready, to enter the trial.
The Botanic Gardens, including the Rose Garden and Anderson Park, Bolton Street Cemetery, Otari-Wilton’s Bush and Truby King Park are also off limits.

Operators will also have to contribute $10,000 to a public safety awareness campaign in conjunction with the Council.

Cr Calvi-Freeman says the best chance to manage outcomes for the city is likely to be through the licensing of commercial operators so people are less inclined to buy their own scooter.

“The Ministry of Transport and NZ Transport Agency are considering options for regulation but this could be some time away.”
