In fact it was the car dealer used to showcase their Leafs.
I believe it was an option, not sure if a limited edition or otherwise.

My son has got the LED lights in his. Also dotted stripe fog lights at the front instead of the generic round one. Looking very snazzy.

For those interested, an update of the randomly flat battery trouble my Leaf was giving keep reading. Anyone not interested, you will want to skip this:

Long story short: I believe it was caused primarily by 2 devices on the CANbus prevented from going to sleep by my blue-tooth OBD2 dongle.

Long story long:

Through a lot of current measurements and fuse-pulling, I have found that it was being caused by the 12 volt Electrically Driven Intelligent Brake Unit (equivalent of the vacuum brake booster in an ICE car) and Combination Meter (instrument cluster) not going into sleep mode. Each draws approx 0.6 amps, causing a parasitic 1.2 amp load on the 12 volt battery when the car was off, resulting in a flat battery 14 - 18 hours after parking the car.

The Combination Meter being awake prevents the brake unit from going to sleep (brake unit seems to go off-line last and come on line first). Momentarily pulling the fuse for the instrument cluster (Fuse #11) cleared the problem, and with no further intervention the brake unit would then go into sleep mode. Once the instrument cluster experiences this fault it doesn't clear until you completely remove its power - Removing the offending blue-tooth dongle and even multiple driving cycles won't clear the problem. Hence when the battery was too flat to start the car, but not totally flat (say 8 volts) I would get this problem repeatedly until the battery finally went totally flat (zero volts) and thereby reset the instrument cluster.

Leaving Leaf spy running for a long period after the car is shut off (usually by mistake in my case) was a sure fire way of inducing this fault, but not the only way. Simply using Leafspy/OBD2 after shutting off the car sometimes (but not consistently) causes this problem. I don't believe it is a fault with Leafspy or the OBD2 dongle, but just a symptom of the fact that they were were keeping the CAN bus active after shut down and impeding the cars normal ~5 minute shut-down sequence.

Clues to this fault being in effect is a persistent faint high pitch noise from the brake unit - it produces a whistle (like an old CRT TV or floro lights) under the bonnet when it is running and it normally runs for a couple of minutes after car shut down and after you close the drivers door, but hearing this whistle more than 5 minutes after shutting the car off & closing the door is a sure sign the fault is in effect (as soon as the car suspects a human is getting into it,the brake unit starts up, so opening the door and/or fiddling with switches will typically power up the brake unit). Another clue that the fault condition was in effect but not yet preventing startup was sustained extremely high 12volt charging currents showing on Leafspy after startup.

The instrument cluster gives no visual clues when this glitch has been triggered.

Pulling the Combination meter (instrument cluster) fuse (Fuse #11 located in the passengers side fuse panel) was the best way to clear the problem without wiping the clock/timer settings in the head deck, and safer than disconnecting the battery lead.

Since I have started turning off the blue-tooth dongle as soon as I have finished using Leafspy, and only using Leafspy with the ignition on, I have not experienced another flat 12v battery.

Other details about the car;

2013, Gen 2, X.

Cluster has had the Japanese to English conversion.

Nav system/head deck is a USA unit.

Removing the Japanese TCM module didn't help the problem. Reconnecting the TCM after discovering the above info hasn't coincided with a occurrence of the problem. TCM only made very slight differences to the current readings taken during trouble shooting.

The 12v battery was repeatedly given a clean bill of health by the battery shops computerised tester & was thoroughly recharged overnight using a smart charger after every flat battery incident.

I'm guessing this a space saver, but it certainly sounds like an improvement on the "Can-O-goo" that is par for the imports :)

- It also indicates they are Oz Spec Vehicles ( which also got a unique spare first time around)

On the above web page it states: "Overseas model shown".

It also says: "Final features and specifications of the Australian model are to be confirmed".

Under the heading of "Connectivity" the specs show both satellite navigation and Apple Car Play / Android Auto.

I can't see whether it has a liquid cooling system or not, can anyone advise on this please?

Also, not sure whether it has a heat pump?

It will be interesting to see whether all the features shown in the specs for this "overseas" model are also present in the model to be sold here.

Yes, good question, the 64 kWh Kia e-Niro $74,000 model has a range of 455km and is referred to as the "EX455". It has 150 kW of power compared with 110 kW for the 40 kWh Leaf.

But some of the Leaf's specifications are superior to that of the EX455, such as having heated seats, and satellite navigation.

It mainly comes down to range, do you want 455km or will the Leaf's 270km be adequate for you?

There is also the $68,000 39.2 kWh e-Niro to consider. This has power of 100 kW and a range of 289km and is referred to as the "EX289". It is a direct competitor for the Leaf. Both of these e-Niros have a liquid cooling system.

But the 64 kWh e-Niro is basically comparable with the entry level 64 kWh Hyundai Kona which now retails at $78,000, while the Elite Kona now costs $84,000. Both Konas have a heat pump, but this isn't present on the e-Niros presently sold here. Overseas, the premium Kia e-Niro has the option of having a heat pump and is a match for the Elite Kona which is being sold here.

Slightly off topic but for me, reviews online and looking at a parked enero, it looks a little bigger more practical than the leaf.

I have a leaf and at some stage our ice focus will need replacing with an ev. The longer range is practically only needed for longer car trips and the extra boot space is a significant benefit.

My leaf doesn't have heat pump in Dunedin and we have coped fine so not a deal breaker. Sat in friends Zoe with warmed seats and my first though was I feel like I wet myself !!.

I might head down to Kia dealer with my focus loaded with suitcases and see how well they fit in enero boot.

I'd be very surprised if the Kia e-Niro wasn't able to replace a lot of people's primary car, especially the EX 455 version. For any drive that requires a stop at the fast charge, you really should stop in any vehicle when driving for that many hours. Most journeys wouldn't require a stop at all, considering how much range you have.

I could see the Leaf being a good 2nd car for driving around town and a Kia e-Niro or Hyundai Kona (or any similarly long range vehicle) being able to handle any longer trips comfortably.

The problem the Kona, eniro and even the new 62kwh Leaf e+ have is that the model 3 is about to hit NZ this year. I would not want to be waiting for a Kona while my neighbor already has a model 3 in his driveway.
