So, I took the Jag I-Pace for a drive in the weekend. It's *very* impressive. It takes a fair bit to impress me in cars these days, I have driven a lot of high performance and luxury cars (and owned a few), but this is something very different. For an SUV the handling is surprisingly car like and the performance is quite something.

Have you taken a Tesla Model X for a test drive before? They start around the same price as an I-Pace although the Model X is more of a performance people mover.

Also interested in this comparison, I found the Model X handling not as favourable as I'd expect, but this was two years ago.

I have a model x and I am not saying that because I have that, but i-pace is sold as SUV but it does not look of drive like one when I tried it :)

For me at that price point, Tesla made sense as they have been on market as proven leaders in EV with lots of examples of 1 million cars on road still working now and their software management is next to none.

If i-pace was around 100k mark, it would been a very good proposal. When I last checked if you tick all the options it goes nearly to 200k which I found was a bit extreme.

At 100K I'd have bought one in the weekend LOL :) A 100-110K it's a no brainer.

Rather than admit that they're late to the game and that their offering is extremely underwhelming compared to what every other manufacture is doing, they're trying to spin some "well to wheel" BS that explains why their battery will be so small. At $65k I can't see why anyone would buy this over a Niro or Kona which have double the battery capacity for not a lot more.

Great, So MG have decided to jump on the "discounted price for the first XX customers" pricing bandwagon...

"MG New Zealand has confirmed that the SUV will hit our shores in mid-2020, with a starting price of $49,990 plus on-road costs. However, that price will only be available to the first 50 pre-orders. Thereafter, an unspecified standard price will be applied"

My guess is that they only expect to have 50 cars here before the end of 2020 and are banking on the 8K feebate kicking in Jan 1 2021 ( assuming the current govt is re-elected) which will likely cancel out any "rise" back to the standard price and they will continue to sell them at 50K...

The promise of an 8K feebate discount from Jan 2021 is gonne make EV sales a tough sell in the later half of 2020.....

Hardly anything on the Internet about this, and not even on Youtube yet. It does seem a little half-hearted from Mazda.

The rotary engine range extender is at least different.

Wow! Who'd have thought that a cut-price EV out of China, whose only connection with the historic MG brand is that they bought the name, would be cheap and flimsy???

Totally agree. Even MG crossover hatch has a bigger battery (44.5kWh) and is $15K cheaper.....For the $65k Mazda is asking for I'd add $8k and get a Tesla Model 3 Standard Rage +.

This will be in the eye of the beholder.....but pretty all low price new cars have this "feature". They last OK if you don't treat them roughly.

The logic they are using to justify their small battery doesn't really stack up. The 30kWh battery in my Leaf may well need replacing after 160,000km because it might not get me to work and back anymore. Ignoring for a moment the fact that it doesn't simply explode at 160K and that its range at that age might still be perfectly acceptable to someone else who doesn't need a reliable 110km of highway driving range, if my car had started with a 60kWh battery instead, then after 160,000km it would still be expected to be somewhere in the vicinity of 48kWh, which is 18kWh more than my current Leaf had straight from the factory. In fact, it would probably need to get down to closer to 30% health before it would no longer suit my daily driving, and at that rate you're looking at over 300,000km. That's a pretty respectable age for a car.

In other words, if you take a bigger battery and dump it after the same mileage as a smaller battery, then of course you generate more CO2 over the life of the battery. But the bigger battery will actually last much longer. I'm sure there are a few people who drive (a normal car) >400km on a daily basis, but my driving habits of ~900km/week put me in the 99th percentile so I doubt there are many.
