Why are Wellingtonians being treated worse than Aucklanders?

Half the country probably don't care. The northern half anyway.

If TG is tolled, why on earth wasn't the Waterview tunnel project in Auckland tolled? eg Why are Wellingtonians being treated worse than Aucklanders?

SH1 in Puhoi is tolled and has been for a decade. Why are Wellingtonians so precious?

@GV27 Wellingtonians are not being precious. There is a big difference between the Puhoi toll section and Transmission Gully. Transmission Gully will be the main daily commuter arterial route between a large population centre and the Wellington and Hutt City. It is also the main frieght route from the inter island. It would be like tolling West or South Auckland to the City.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The ironic thing is that we as tax payers have paid for the road already, it wasn't ever planned to be paid for from being tolled.

I suggest you research that. The road is PPP Funded, it has not been paid for already by taxpayers.

The road has already been paid for out of taxes for a half century.

If that were true then surely we would not be borrowing money to get it build? Or need the private sector to chip in to help pay for it.

nickb800: They have to do something about the induced demand that will follow the road opening. Otherwise we'll get gridlock on sh1 through to the city and spend billions fixing it.

Scarcity of parking in the CBD might be sufficient alone - people will think twice about driving if we have Auckland level daily parking fees.

"Let's spend 50 years talking about a new road to make easier to get in and out of the capital city. Ooops, what we do now that people might actually want to use the road? I know, let's charge people to use a road they have already paid for with taxes..."

I agree that it seems silly on face value, but it's pretty hard to escape:

- We will be spending $125m every year for the next 30 years to pay for it (capex + interest + opex). We haven't "already paid for it"

- It will take further billions (e.g. Petone to Grenada, Aotea offramp to Tawa widening) to maintain existing travel times to the CBD for those South of Porirua CBD

- We have easily spent $1 billion upgrading our rail network and rolling stock in the past ten years

I really think that if we don't have a plan to manage demand in place before the road opens, we'll have an even more expensive mess on our hands 10 years down the track.

Personally, the road will make a huge difference to my commute, and I'm willing to pay for the benefit.

Correct. It was cabinet approved for partnership funding circa 2012

As a Wellingtonian, I disagree. We are being precious. These possible tolls were highlighted right from the start. Fact of the matter is that without the tolls it is likely the motorway would never have been built. I have no issues paying a small toll if it means I get to drive into work a little bit faster and safer. No difference from Melbourne etc... Those roads are great. Don't like transmission gully, take the alternative coastal road. Nobody is forcing anybody to use it. Bring on 2020....

And without the partnership funding there would be no transmission gully road. People would still be moaning .....

The toll will affect all New Zealand. It will be the main freight route linking South and North.

Do we toll or not?  If we do, there will be a problem. If we have a fuel tax instead, there will be a problem. If we borrow there will be a problem. We don't have enough money to pay for everything. If we want it we have to pay for it, or be happy to forego it

Knowing something from the start does not make it correct.
I fully support some tolling of roads but this decision is wrong.
Kapiti Coast has most of the viable land for residential development to ease housing issues in the GWR. The population is is already North of 50,000 and growing rapidly.

Which will now be more accessible thanks to TG Motorway. Even for those that dont want to use TG Motorway, the alternative route will also be far less congested than it is today.

I'm fine with it being a toll highway, however it will likely charge the same amount for motorcycles, which hardly seems fair considering the reduced wear and tear on the road, reduced level of congestion and also limited ability to carry passengers.
