On the other hand many people who would never buy a new car will consider this one. Telsa will do well in NZ.

It's impressive they look on track to do 90k+ cars Q4, wonder how much prices will come up if China puts taffifs on rare earth minerals this year..

What happened? The model 3 was going to be the mass market affordable car... The roadster was low volume/high price, The model S and S were meant to be higher volume, but a more reasonable price, and the Model 3 was meant to be the low cost mass market option that would compete with mid market dinosaur burners - that's the impression I had - clearly that's wrong.

 

But the Model 3 is (new) Audi S3 or (New) Mustang money. It's over twice the price of an entry level (New) Corolla for the entry level Model 3.

 

Sure the Model 3 is now classed as a luxury sedan (It has to be at that price!)

 

$75-113k?

 

Still, I think it's a great thing, it's going to help drive down the prices of really nice cars on the secondhand market a bit more :-)

Elon & Tesla has mentioned that the Model 3 is more of a competitor to the BMW 3 Series and it is priced about the same. Interestingly, when the Model 3 production started ramping up in the US it started outselling the Corolla

The much hyped USD35k base level spec has come and already gone worldwide ($35USD + NZ GST + $4k shipping, landing costs etc = NZ$66k), as such the cheapest car available is $74,960 drive away.

Depending on what you are cross shopping this with, as to what value it represents.

If you are after a performance car, the base model 3 could be compared with the BMW 330i. Both are RWD performance cars and have 0-100km/h times of 5.6 seconds. The BMW has a list price of $89,900.

If you are after an electric car with decent range, the model 3 could be compared to the Hyundai Kona electric. Base price is roughly the same as the tesla model 3 at $73,990 + ORC. In terms of range, the Kona wins 400+ km of real world range vs 354km of epa rated range for the Tesla, but I feel the tesla's physically larger size, safety features and performance chops make it much better value.

Of course, a base corolla or Hilux will come in under half the price...

and i suppose if you don't live in AKL you need to ship the car to have assessment and warranty works - who will pay for that? (google + youtube suggests 90% chance that would be needed)

The Tesla NZ site indicates that there will be a service centre in Christchurch soon, but they will likely have mobile service centres as well. with Tesla's the theory is that they require very little service, I know of some in NZ with over 40k on the clock that have never required a service (although they do require a little more frequent tyre changes) 

 

You can see why traditional dealers really dislike Tesla, its pretty disruptive to their maintenance models, I still own 2 European cars which cost over 1k each year just to service at the dealer :(

The other thing to add to the Tesla is the software, Its by far ahead of (subjectively) all the competitors with updates out every few weeks.

MS Windows puts out an update every few weeks too ;p

In a more serious note, given the reports of a chequered history of quality work Tesla's, I'm keen to see if quality control is good despite production ramping up.

Otherwise, if you don't need the benefits of an SUV shape for cargo space (which is more a nod to the Niro than the Kona), it's a compelling option.
