Things are happening rapidly in the EV charging space at the moment.

Today ChargeNet announced many new DC fast chargers going live....all over the country. a few have been mentioned here recently. The new units are a mix of 25kw Delta DC chargers and 50kw Tritium Veefil DC chargers. All support both CCS2 and ChaDeMo. The 50kw units cost 25c / kWh + 25c / minute and the 25kw units cost 25c / kWh and 15c / minute.

I haven't posted very much about Tesla Superchargers in New Zealand. That was mainly because there weren't many. That's changing.

These are currently the fastest DC chargers in NZ, capable of supplying up to 120kw. Early Tesla owners can charge for free for the life of the vehicle while they own it. Model 3 owners get some free usage, plus any gained from using referrals then pay 42c / kWh with no time charging unless they finish and fail to unplug. If they fail to move the car within 5 minutes and the station is at least 50% occupied, they will be charged 70c / minute. If the station is 100% occupied, they will be charged $1.40 / minute. If they are the only car at the station and there are 4 or more stations and the other 3 are empty, they won't be charged for failing to leave within 5 minutes. This was brought in because some Tesla car owners were using the charging spaces as all-day car parks (mainly in the US and UK).

So far, as far as I can tell, half of the Superchargers at each location have been retrofitted with CCS2 tethered cables to support the Model 3 cars.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread yet or not but "early next year" ChargeNet are installing 4 350kW chargers at the Bombay Hills. These will be highest capacity chargers on NZ when they're added. At this stage only the Model 3 will be able to take advantage of them (up to 200kW) until the Taycan is released

Any kind of Fast Charger on the Bombay's will be appreciated. Getting to Thames/Coromandel is presently a little bit awkward with the present gap between the Auckland chargers and Thames charger.

I've been thinking lately about whether we'll start seeing petrol stations/locations transition to being EV charging stations. It seems this is starting in California and parts of Europe?

The Wellington region has 7 new EV charging sites at Foodstuffs locations. They all work via ChargeNet.

Timaru is better anyway. It's on SH1. The only other Tesla Supercharger in NZ on SH1 is in Taupo. The rest are a bit of a detour off the main route up and down NZ.

At long last the ChargeNet 50kw DC charger is now live at Bulls as of today (4/10/19).

This means EVs heading up and down SH1 needing more power will no longer have to detour to Fielding or Palmerston North. It's the last link in the chain for smaller battery EVs traveling across the central North Island.

The six Tesla Superchargers in Timaru are now live.

Four of the six have both CC2 (Model 3) and Tesla (Models S and X). The remaining two are Tesla only (Models S and X).

There are already many petrol stations with EV fast chargers. Off the top of my head:

Z on Te Irirangi Dr in Botany (Auckland) - ChargeNet
Z at the Airport in Auckland - ChargeNet
Z on Moorhouse Ave in Christchurch - ChargeNet
Z on Hutt Rd in Petone - ChargeNet
BP on Pakuranga Rd (Auckland)
BP in Warkworth

Eventually, they will be "service centres" for rest stops (food / toilets) where you can also charge your car. Because most people can charge at home, these will initially be on highways on the way into and on the way out of towns and cities.....(My opinion...and hope).

If most EVs in 5 years can do 500km+ then the need for charging other than at hotels and homes will be less than it is today for dino-burners - who need to get ALL their energy from petrol stations, whereas EVs will only need to charge at such places when on longer trips or if the owner can't charge anywhere else for some reason.

Ah right. I did know of the Chargenet one in Botany [very hard to see from the road though I find] and the Vector on in BP Pakuranga I've used a couple of times. Good to see there's a few other places too at least.

The project connects Christchurch with the West Coast for travellers, plugging an important gap in the electric vehicle charging network and providing options for a range of electric vehicle types.

Darfield Fast Charger: Gateway to Arthur's Pass

ChargeNet will install one 50 kW DC fast charging station at the Four Square store at Darfield, in partnership with EECA, Orion and Foodstuffs
