Your write up reminded me of when I used to do some gliding. Eyeing my energy reserves (altitude and speed) and constantly scanning the atmosphere and terrain for thermals and updrafts for my next energy 'fix'.

@Linuxluver sounds like a great drive and getting to see heaps more without all the rush and racing.

There must have been a recent shipment of used Leaf's I have seen quite a few around Wellington and at least a dozen today. Moore Wilson Fresh had one outside their grocery shop in Wellington today promoting EV's.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Its "International Drive Electric Week" at the moment. Will see a lot of them around I think:

@Linuxluver - Not sure if this has been asked before. But is it possible to change from MPH to KM/H on the UK Leaf?

You missed the part about pulling over, then. :-)

To be behind me would take take effort and commitment. If traffic is steady, I either pull over or speed up. The situations I'm describing here are longer legs on unknown roads. When the road is known, you'd not know me from any other car. :-)

This seems to be possible.

I will let you know when my 2016 30kw UK LEAF arrives. :-)

Yes.
I have a UK 2014 Leaf and everything is in km.
Bought it from here. Www.nzev.co.nz
Ex UK demo, also had 6.6kw option installed.

CYaBro: Is there any way to get the Japanese display switched to English?

I saw a Facebook post a couple of weeks back that showed you how to flash your Japan dash firmware with a US version. There will probably be cautions and caveats....I'll see if I can find the post (ie: Google it). :-)

Found it on facebook. There is an outfit in Sri Lanka (NavgoElectronics) that has the ability reflash the firmware on the JDM Nissan Leafs to an English language version (Looks like UK or Europe). Looks to only apply to the instrument cluster screen (not the integrated head unit on higher spec variants).

Out of interest if such a service was available, would anybody pay say NZ$300 for it?

Yeah I would probably be interested. Depending on what is involved $300 sounds little on the pricey side tho...

Cool - enjoy! What's the SOH on it? The range on mine in the past week feels like ~10-20% less with the cold weather (daily commute mostly on Wairakei Rd/Fendalton Ave), let us know if you notice a difference later this week when it's meant to be warmer.

My OBD dongle hasn't arrived yet. The dealer didn't have one either so we couldn't get the batteries but I was prepared to take a gamble since it is only a 2014 with 13K kms on the clock.

Will keep an eye out re. range improvements in warmer weather. I work from home however so I don't have a standard commute to make comparisons easy.

It was still at a full 12/12. The guy had replaced the head unit with an after-market unit - has NZ radio, NZ maps, reversing camera, BT etc. Climate control is all by dials and knobs below. The only Japanese you see is in the dash display in certain screens.

NZ nav was added? Nice touch. Who is doing that? (Car vendor, I mean - a one-off or some one importing and adding value?)

The guy I bought it off here in ChCh also has another business installing head units in all types of Jap imports. There is a link to their site earlier in this thread (OEMAudio). It seems really quite good, full GPS navigation including POIs, speed limits etc. You have to pay for map updates (I think about $90 a pop - updates released a couple of times a year). It has a NZ radio with proper bands etc. Has full bluetooth integration with your phone, including a handsfree mic installed above the driver. And it incorporates the reversing camera.

I would really like to hack it a bit and try adding some hooks to my home automation system, so I can hit *Arrive home* and it will disarm the alarm and open the garage door :). It apparently just runs WindowsCE so it should be possible.

He said it costs about $875 including installation for the Leaf head unit.

Thanks @Dingbatt - that is the guy who I took a test drive with actually - he was telling me all about his side business with the head units. Very cool stuff. I am looking into possibly importing direct from Japan (just figuring out if it is worth it) but will definitely be using them if I do.

Anyone know if there is anything I need to do in terms of voltages etc when importing from Japan? Is it just a matter of buying a NZ EVSE charger (i.e. one of the JuicePoint 8amp chargers)? Or does something need to be converted in the car itself as well?

My Japan EVSE was modded and it charges at 16amps. This makes a real difference vs 8 amps as it cuts charging time in half. That may not matter over night, but it makes a difference on the weekend when you go out to a local "country market" in the morning (or whereever) and they go home (on about 25% remaining) for a couple of hours to do other stuff..... before heading out for kids sports or whatever....and in that 2 hours a 16amp  EVSE can add 25% to your battery, but an 8amp will only add 12%. I know you might think "Oh, I won't really need to do that...." but once you're driven the LEAF for a while you tend to find you don't want to drive anything else.......and being able to give the car quick boost and head out again just makes life simpler.

Quite impressed with this JuiceBox charger. I have connected it up to their servers so I can monitor it from anywhere. It will email if I haven't plugged in the car after 9pm and I have it setup to only charge between 9pm and 7am (which is when I get my cheap night rates @ 14c/kWh).

It is only 8amps though and I take your point about having the ability to fast charge being very useful. I was looking at the DIY kits from openevse.com and thinking about buying/building one of those.

There is some chance that it requires an IC to be unsoldered from a circuit board, reflashed with specialist IC writing hardware, and resoldered again.

If this is the case, a $300 price point wouldn't work for a vendor with NZ labour costs.

I guessed the price by doubling the Sri Lanka price. probably wishful thinking.

Ah in that case, yes would be happy to pay $300.
