When I was in Christchurch in early January I was shocked at the state of many of the tyres.

Apparently they have the Internet now in Christchurch so people had discovered how to do burnouts on them and that was clearly a pretty popular pastime for many people. In both Auckland and Wellington I've seen and used scooters with wear, but nothing like the random selection of maybe 50 scooters that I saw and passed in Christchurch.

Christchurch just got the internet??? That’s pretty mean. When I got connected last month when it came out , the modems all included spare rubber bands, so it’s well supported :-)

I find it interesting that on this thread we have people calling for a per-ride surcharge for Lime use to cover costs to government (in its ACC guise), and on another thread we have strong calls for better subsidy to Electric Vehicle owners. Surely, if Lime will get some people off other less climate-friendly forms of transport - maybe reducing demand for diesel-burning buses and taxis - then the increased cost to ACC is a price worth paying?
Although I haven’t used a Lime yet, it strikes me as a great way to encourage people onto public transport by solving the first mile / less mile disincentive

I think you're right that the scooters are quite disruptive to the status quo - although I'm not sure if the scooter will be the final answer to the last mile problem.

They're competing with other machines like the segway and electric skateboard. The e-scooter does currently look like the minimum required for an easy to operate 'e-vehicle' of some kind and probably towards the lower end of the cost scale too.

The thing that strikes me is how many changes in transport have come from the introduction of Li-ion battery technology. The uptake in e-bikes in Wellington has been huge just going by the number that pass me on my old fashioned pedally.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

Train station to work, bus stop to work and the reverse. It's mainly a replacement for walking in practice. It is what is is.

Lime and their ilk also demo the e-scooter as a potential car replacement for the whole of shorter commutes, given there are very affordable scooters out there to buy.

For example, I've replaced my 8km return car commute to work with a 7km return scooter commute.

Anyway, will be interesting to see what happens at 12pm today...

Agreed. I've replaced my 3 x weekly 3.5km bike ride with a scooter commute which doesn't help the environment or the wallet. However I've also replaced a 2 x weekly 8km car commute with an 8km scooter.

TBH I don't know how long I will do the 8km scooter for. The 3.5km one is fine but the 8km takes 22min and is on a rougher patch of roads and I wonder how it will go in the wet weather.

I use to bike the 8km but can't be bothered with getting sweaty, showering and having to bring a change of clothing (3.5km is short enough not to worry if you go at a slow enough pace)

Do you use limes or have you bought your own.... with that sort of usage the payback would be pretty quick....

I really thought that when they were introduced, they would be a great personal transport device.

Anything that gets cars off the road has to be good - right?

I thought that the idiocy and lack of care and respect for other road/footpath users, shown by some riders would subside once the novelty wore off.

Sadly I have seen no reduction in the 'muppet' factor - if anything I think the idiot users have got bolder and sillier.

I use the footpaths in Queen street and central Auckland and have witnessed numerous Lime users have very close shaves with pedestrians - there is huge scope for real damage from these things.

I realise that this is a case of the minority ruining it for others. But in this case the 'minority' is a fairly large and annoying group that cannot be ignored.

I reluctantly think its time to say bye-bye to Lime scooters.

I agree but its a people problem not a scooter problem. There are rules for cycles. Road only, helmets. That works. Scooters have basically no rules you do what you want, so people take that to the next level. if councils and Police made a few obvious rules and enforced them, then people will behave

Or maybe a scheme using the 'crowd' nature. Use the app to report another user - when they reach a threshold of complain number their speeds get throttled / banned etc.

I want these measures

1. Helmets

2. Footpath is allowed at a low speed, not sure yet what that is, maybe 10k thats only 2 x walking speed. Everyone else has right of way

3. Cycle lane is ok

4. Road is ok

MUST be enforced.

True - But I dont have daily contact with most of the above idiots.

I agree we need cops pinging people for using phones in cars, red light runners, intersection window washers, vagrants hassling people on the streets and some fines for idiot scooter drivers - but I dont see that happening anything soon.

The only time I ever see police is while they are driving at high speed with the lights flashing through central Auckland. Really think we need more (some) foot (maybe scooter) or bike based local cops.
