jonathan18: ... with our Leaf being basically 10% out across the range.)

Yip, the Leaf is 10% out w.r.t. the speedo. You have to be going 110km/h according to the speedo to do a true 100km/h. To do the legal speed limit of 50km/h, the Leaf speedo has to show 55km/h.

Having said all of that, most likely duckInferno knows that by now?

Or they think that everyone else is a maniac... Leafs are one of the worst offenders for driving slowly I find. Up there with priuses with a taxi sign on them.

Completely agree on the inaccuracy.  On that note though, how accurate are apps like Waze?  I use it through Android Auto in my 2019 Tucson, and it says 106kmh on the speedo is 100kmh via GPS?

GPS based speed (such as the readout in Waze or Google maps) has some limitations, but in general, of you are traveling a steady speed on a straight bit of road it will be very accurate.

My leaf  has 107 km/h indicated at 100 km/h true.

There are two different tire sizes (205/55 R16 & 215/55 R17). I have the latter which is in theory 2.4% larger in circumference than the tire for the 16" rims, and theoretically provides 8mm more ground clearance.

There is also some tolerances for tire makers, plus the difference between a work and new tire tread depth. Recently Changed my tires on my other car, and the speedo overread dropped from about 8km/h to 4km/h. Tires look taller in the sidewall despite being the same size too.

Haha, yes I'm aware, my speedo is 10% fast.  When I say 100km/h above I mean after translation, ie. 111 on the speedo.

I'm now committed to trying to pick up a 30KW Leaf out of Japan once things open up and I can get rid of my Mini.

As it would be a fresh import, I'll get it to someone like Blue Cars for an import package.

As far as chargers go, it would be an 'out the window' job on a standard 240V socket  initially until I can get a plug of some sort fitted to our carport - even then it would probably just a be caravan plug.

Are there any 'must-have' bits of equipment people would recommend that would have made their lives easier when they first got their Leaf?

I got a caravan plug and associated circuit upgrade.  I regret it.  The number of times I've actually made use of the faster charge time can be counted on one hand yet it cost thousands.  Those few times it was useful, I could have used a public charger for all up <$5.

I considered an english head unit upgrade but decided it wasn't worth the money.  In hindsight this was the right decision.  99.9% of my interaction with it is to control music, which needs no translation.  A couple times a year I use google translate camera to navigate more in-depth settings like timed charging.

Otherwise I just got a dashcam + hardwiring kit, which I don't regret :D

I got them to put a caravan plug into our garage while the house was being demolished and rebuilt from scratch so it only cost me a few hundred dollars extra on top of everything else. It comes in handier than I would have expected especially since the car is now down to 71% SOH so it gets a decent extra boost if we go out in the morning and then need to go out again in the afternoon.

That's only a normal 20A circuit, but even so the Leaf can only pull 3.3kW, or about 14.6A. The charger can do 16A.

Are you running a phone on a mount or just using the stereo controls for music? I know you can flash Android Auto/Apple Carplay onto the X/G models now using the SD card but I've been happy enough using a big screen phone and a dashmount with the Android Auto app.

Can you do that on a 2016? I’m sure my wife would appreciate Car Play.

Good move.  In my case my circuit was only the standard 10A so I had to get that upgraded with the associated fuse box etc.  While I was there I bumped it up to 40A for futureproofing.  If you're already installing a circuit then by all means I recommend getting a CCA or cheap wall charger installed while you're at it.

Currently I just rest my phone in a cup holder lol.  I should get a mount.

I was under the impression that X/G models are stuck with what we've got because the heat pump etc is integrated with the head unit.  S models can replace the heat unit with an aftermarket one, but I love the heatpump/cruise control/etc too much.

Yeah since the garage was already wired it was cheap. I did ask about upgrading the cable from the house but that would have been a lot more expensive. So since my commute to work uses about 22-24kWh even the 16A charger would comfortably top me back up overnight.

I'm curious to hear more about being able to flash the headunit for CarPlay support, as well as maintaining control of the aircon etc., but would be concerned that 2014 hardware may not be up to the task of running a 2021 Apple app/OS.

Definitely glad we got the G spec because cruise control, heat pump and B-mode are game changers for me.

FWIW, I've got a 2014 24kwh G spec model, with 80% health, and I drive in B-mode exclusively, not noticing a big difference in performance from D mode.

I only charge up to 80% overnight as the electricity cost incurred for an extra several hours to charge from 80 to 100% aren't worth the extra 20%, IMO.

80% usually gives me a guestimated 104 km when I first get in in the mornings, which is plenty to cover commute and any other errands during/after the work day.

Re: The X/G models - it seems to be this one dude operating over Whatsapp who has flashed both systems onto his Leaf;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rawi5OY4-AQ

Seems to have it working on the older Leafs too?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fQG40zojqQ

I'll just be using this as a commuter car and possibly for my partner to use as well - I have a beater manual that I can't bear to part with so this will likely only do 50km a day with the odd-roadtrip for novelty's sake (I'm guessing that will wear off quickly).

I got my head unit flashed last year, worth the time and effort for me to be honest (and at the time I could afford it).

I now charge the battery only to 80%, which does my daily commute without issue (but I don't drive far).

My 2012 leaf's battery is down to a pretty low level now - 61.5% at last check, and it does what I need, but I'm getting sick of not being able to go very far. I've got a battery coming from Christchurch to replace this one is 85% health, so I'll get a lot further with this one. Yes, it's expensive, but it's cheaper than buying a new car.
