FYI:

2020 Prius Prime (PHEV) is now available for orders. I told Toyota last year to change white plastic to black and to make it 5 seater instead of 4.

I guess I was not the only one who suggested that. They've listened and acted accordingly.

I guess I was not the only one who suggested that. They've listened and acted accordingly.

This sounds good for someone that is only driving around 50kms a day. Petrol / Hybrid will kick in when going on longer drives.

Pricing and the current finance offer is very attractive too.

Not sure about the shape of the car though, looks odd.

10 year transferable battery warranty, so that's not bad.

While I still would prefer to have the simplicity, and low maintenance, of an EV, the Prius transaxle "hybrid drive" has been historically more reliable than a conventional automatic transmission.

To me its styling is a bit busy and garish, and it sits a little too low for practicality, perhaps Toyota overcompensating for its pedestrian reputation.

Just watched a video of the official launch of the Ford Mustang Mach-E in LA. While I don’t agree with calling it a Mustang, it actually looks like quite a nice vehicle and I do hope it is built in RHD versions (and comes here).

James May (of Top Gear fame) has purchased 2 electric cars:

- a Tesla Model S

- a Toyota Mirai

His plan is to run both, and see how they perform as cars.

It's not available in any form until at least October 2020. I can't imagine they will be making very many of them to start with.....so we're probably looking at 3 years for NZ....if at all.

Meanwhile....Tesla Model 3 is 8-12 weeks if ordered today. Model Y will be in interesting for timing here. MG eZS cross-over SUV is 12-16 weeks if ordered today and NZ$50,100. (I've ordered one myself.)

Chap at work here in Dunedin also got the free performance version for cost of long range. Same story as you with colour and wheel match.

Ardern has been driving the Ioniq for about 2 years. I know she and Clark had it right around the time the current government took office. They were seen by other EV drivers at Kaiwaka charging. I think it's her personal car.

For those that are nervous about the battery life of an EV...here's a Tesla Model S that has done almost 1million KMs and is on its second battery pack. It got a new battery pack at 650k km's apparently due to other issues but it had only lost 14% of its max charge at that point.

Obviously this doesn't apply to all EVs - a Leaf which has no thermal battery management will never see a battery life like this. However, most EVs these days are thankfully including proper thermal management.
