Linuxluver: I think it's her personal car.

She will have also have a "self drive" car provided by DIA and its reported that a large chunk of these are EVs

"All cabinet ministers – and the four ministers outside of cabinet – have self-drive cars and 53% of these are EVs."

When you said "self drive" I first thought you meant fully autonomous :)

Mercedes enter the NZ luxury SUV EV market, and ~$150K appears to be the price point everyone is trying to get under...

"The EQC shapes up as a big rival for the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron. And curiously, it's the Mercedes that now sits as the cheapest of the group.

When it lands at local showrooms in January, the EQC's pricing will start with an MRRP of $142,900 plus on-road costs. That's $2000 cheaper than the $144,900 I-Pace S, and almost $6000 cheaper than the entry-level e-tron. "

I guess there is the Model X sitting in that market too, so plenty of options is you have $$$ burning s hole in your wallet...

I thought this new technology is interesting for EV charging stations:

Its a flywheel that is used to store up and deliver a quicker charging than the grid would allow.

"The innovative system makes it possible to supply electric vehicles with power using fast-charging technology, even where there is ordinarily insufficient power. The charging station absorbs peak loads in the grid, accelerating its flywheels to high speeds and storing the electricity as kinetic energy. When an electric car is then connected, the Kinetic Power Booster releases this as electricity, and in doing so doubles the charging power that the national grid could have provided on its own. This makes this clever solution ideal for car dealerships or shopping centres, for example."

Here is the press release from Skoda that has introduced this new technology in Prague.

Can't see this being a big hit in Christchurch. Brought to you by the same marketing geniuses who named the Chevy NoVa and AMC Gremlin?

The physics of flywheel energy storage are well established, it has always been the economics that have been the problem ....

What Went Wrong With Tesla's Cybertruck Launch?

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk took to the stage late Thursday to show off his new electric pickup truck. But things didn't go smoothly when the glass broke on the Cybertruck. Ed Ludlow was there and reports on "Bloomberg Technology."

They later released video of Franz throwing the same steel bearing at the Cybertrk windows and they didn't break. One journalist said they had thrown the bearing "50 times" before the actual launch demo......

"Glass breaks eventually".

There's your problem. Glass is really tough, until you scratch it.

You'll see lots of YouTube videos of people trying to break car glass with their foot, or even a heavy rock, but a small light piece of hard jagged spark plug ceramic will do it.

Yes, but unfortunately for Musk, which video will be shown the most? I wonder if any of the engineers said “You can’t keep doing that it’s going to shatter eventually”?

I mean, yes, at first glance it wasn't a good look. At the same time though, how many otherwise unrelated places have you seen the Cybertruck show up now due to this incident? It's all over Reddit and Facebook now in the form of memes (Elon's favourite medium)...and Tesla hasn't had to pay for any marketing ;)  Ultimately, nearly everyone commenting on the smashed glass currently drives a vehicle with glass that would smash if you threw a large steel ball bearing at it.

At 10:30, discusses Volvo's electric future.

Why Volvo Is Losing Its Big Lead In Safety

CNBC

The name Volvo has been synonymous with car safety for decades. The brand has often been the first to introduce key safety features that are now common across the car industry. Safety, though, has become a bigger priority for consumers and automakers alike, and that's causing trouble for Volvo. Automotive technology has improved, regulations have tightened, and other brands are catching up. That's making it harder and harder for Volvo to keep its lead in car safety.

For instance, the Volvo XC40 comes with safety features like automatic emergency breaking, oncoming lane collision mitigation, lane keeping aid, and driver fatigue monitoring. Add-ons include a pilot assist semi-autonomous driving system, 360-degree parking camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Many other luxury subcompact SUVs like the Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X1 come with similar standard safety features.
