Just tidying up some costs in my spreadsheet before I commit to anything;

Can anyone tell me what sort of cables you'd say are essential for running a 40kwh Leaf?

Can anyone with a 40kwh model tell me what sort of filters (Cabin etc) they've replaced and how often?

For any EV, I'd suggest having an EVSE with normal 3 pin plug so you can charge slow but anywhere - cars will often come with one. Additionally a type 2 - type 1/2 (1 for Leaf, 2 for others) cable for charging from non tethered public AC chargers. Longer is better if you need to be a spot or 2 away from the charger if spaces are blocked.

Apparently the Japanese EVSEs are no good here so I'm factoring in the cost of sourcing them locally.

Looks like a Type 2 16A and an 8A EVSE are going to cost around $500 each.

Unless I hit the jackpot at auction then I'm guessing a 40kwh import from Japan is going to be limited to 3.6kw charging anyway.

Depends on how you plan to charge it. I'm pretty sure they legally have to supply you a cable and that tends to be a standard 8A 3 pin wall charger.

At home you can choose to install charging equipment that may have a lead or be a socket so youd need to get one for that. Some people just use 15A caravan sockets which have their own lead as well.

Out and about most slower destination chargers you would need a type 1 to type 2 lead to use them. We talked to the dealer when we got ours and he threw one in for us.

At a minimum I would say the trickle charger and type 1 to type 2 are fairly essential. Anything above that is a nice to have and safer to have. You might struggle getting a 40kw fully charged in the cheap power window on an 8A lead as we can't even get out 30 full on it in that time and we've got a generous window of 9-7.

That is what some will try to make you believe, e.g. those who sell so called "certified" crap from PRC which are melting and falling apart as prooved by numerous photo posts on FB. In meanwhile people were using Japanese EVSE for over 5 years daily - those from Leafs, Mitsubishi and Toyota PHEV with no issues. Do not take it as advice as authorities labeled them non-complaints. Some locally sold aftermarket "certified" (fake) EVSE poses high safety and fire risk.

I happened to have bought one with 6.6kw imported from Japan, but yeah, they do seem to be extreme rare.

For anyone who doesn't already know, the easiest way to tell is by looking at the onboard charger under the hood, if the top is flat, it's 6.6kw, otherwise 3.6kw.

Awesome, this all really helpful, thanks guys.

Now I just have to match anything I'm looking at at auction with their auto classifieds and see if I can find an under-bonnet shot.

To be honest, you'll be fine with 3.6kW. We ran a 30kWh Leaf for over 3 years off a normal 8A charger, and that was with a 110km round trip daily commute. 10 hours overnight will be around 34kWh - if you're driving more than that daily you really want a car that looks after its batteries better than a Leaf. That 110km daily run for us meant 100% daily charging - and 4 years later the battery is pretty shagged. I'm having a weak module replaced in a couple of weeks.

I'm max 50km round trip so I'll be babying it.

Cool, well that's one less thing to worry about.

I do 72km each day and have no problem getting it charged with my 8A EVSE.  Regardless of the battery capacity, you only need to put back in as much as you have taken out and most of the time the 8A charger will be more than adequate.

The label stating it's output is on the right side of it (right side of the vehicle). Accessible to make a photo with a phone.

dvsdave: Question fam, where is everyone buying their second hand leaf?

Trade me is the biggest marketplace by far. Most of the dealers have their stock on their too.

Facebook marketplace gets a handful of leaf's from people who don't want to pay trade-me fees.

In terms of dealership's, I only know Auckland, and only as a person viewing so haven't been a customer.

GVI seems pretty good (general second hand car dealer, with a lot of EV's in stock typically), as did ACEV (dedicated EV dealer on Barry's pt road).

If you are in the Wellington area then pay a visit to Coventry Cars on Railway Ave in Lower Hutt. Paid a visit to them the other day to get the SOH read in my wife's leaf and only noticed 3 40kW cars on the yard, the guy I was speaking to said all the Gen 1 & 2 cars were selling while still on the boat to NZ!
